So, in light of recent events and for those that weren't online to see the RP Event.

A young lady by the name of Julia experienced her awakening in Regalia today... and became possessed by a demon, then attempting to run and wreak havoc on the city. She was, thankfully, stopped, but now those in charge of protecting the city have called for a ban to all magic.
Magic is now illegal and banned in Regalia!

I know that for some people, asking them to not use magic is like asking them to cut off a limb. It is a part of who they are. I am concerned for the well being of one or two close friends of mine just for this reason.

What are everyone's opinions in light of these events? I'm sure most individuals have at least one friend who uses magic. What does this mean for them? Will they leave Regalia? Decide to just not use magic? Use it in secret? Rather be killed than not use magic? Plan a revolt against the very people attempting to protect Regalia?

Do discuss, I am quite interested in hearing everyone's opinions in regards to this event.

My character, Rike, knows nothing but magic, so you can imagine how I feel.

The event of a person being possesed by a demon during the awakening is a possibility. A risk many are willing to accept for the abilities it may grant them. That magic has to be outlawed only because if just happend in front of the cathedral is simply said 'a overreacted responce' from the counsil. These things happen. And its not within their rights to forse an outlaw on us 'magic users'.

To this I will add that every one able to wield the powers of the arcane, or surporters of there purpose should join forces to revoke the counsil's decision on this matter. As it was given at an instance and clearly not thought intirely trough. I do not ask to pickup arms against Regalian authorities. All I ask is that we should surport the free useage of magic! And its potential to do good! Magic is not by definition evil, even less its wielders!

Feel free to choose the misfortune of one person becomming possesed by a demon as your motive to outlaw magic. But do not expect the people to accept it so easily. A resistance will rise. And it shall not fall untill its purpose is compleet!

I don't use magic, so this should concern me. But I believe in freedom and I know I'll be angry if hunting was banned. So my arrows shall rain from the sky until we take back the use of magic.

I don't mind it being outlawed, (Considering I don't use it.) but I have noticed an uprising in groups attempting to revolt.

It's a shame of it doing so. With that in mind, some Yanar would actually lose their power, as they base theirs off magic, do they not?
Plus, I really feel sorry for the possessed woman, being used like a puppet and all.

Actually, the event pointed out that if you are a mage, you will need a mage license. This can be obtained by a top official, (eg. Senator or GrandMaster Judge) in Regalia.

Here's my thought on the subject. Awakenings have almost always, in my experience, been preformed in private confined places so that if a person WAS possessed during the awakening, they would be away from harm. That being said, whichever idiot thought it was a GOOD idea to preform an awakening in the center of Regalia, where everyone was watching (which could in turn ruin the ritual by causing a lapse in concentration) ought to have their head examined! It's no wonder the poor soul was possessed! She didn't stand a chance. As for the ban on magic, it is wrong to take disallow something that is a part of so many.

someone with a big enough ego that thought he could pull it off as a publicity stunt, wasn't it the crimsons and guards who planned this? two groups with massive amounts of hate after them? by pulling off a awakening as a event it would have made them look better in eyes of mages and the public alike for such a amazing feat. of course the people knew nothing of what they were doing and caused chaos. THEN they have the audacity to say ban magic all together, its like saying "i suck at (insert thing you did wrong) it must be banned for everyone because it is evil!". it is childish and more then likely going to start a rebellion that overthrows both the guards and crimson inquisition.

all i can say is thank god Rowan's not magical... Suck Shit everyone else xD

I honestly have no real opinion on the subject but if they keep banning things in regalia half of the server will be executed

More likely, they planned the awakening under conditions in which the woman was virtually certain to get possessed, and used it as an excuse to go against magic and mages, with the support of the people, to gain more power over a greater percentage of the power base. Mages are another powerful group, if they are outlawed legally, with public support, they are worth getting rid of.

those http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MagnificentBastard crimsons!

The only magic I have ever used in regalia is let air out of my butt. Therefore, my character isn't effected by this :)

What do you mean by "they are worth getting rid of"? Are you saying that about mages? Or other groups?

I mean that they are a potential threat. Mages are one of the different power bases in Regalia. They are also more different to the common public then many existing groups. Therefore, they are worth eliminating.

"I have never especially like those who wield magic, it is often abused and tends to lead people into thinking they are somehow better then others. Now, I have occassionally used magic in the past and am capable of doing small things with it, when I really need to or put my mind to it, but I have no intention of making it a habit and am perfectly happy with this turn of events. Banning the use of magic won't directly harm anyone, as mages and wizards can still enter the city and access its port and markets. This does no direct damage to anything while also putting an end to a major threat that could do great damage to the city and it's people. I like the choice of the city council, and that is a rare thing these days." - Mr. Paloin

you know when you word it like that it sounds so- nope. we all know that people will go to far with this, you say mages and wizards can still enter the city i say we are going to find anyone who is even suspected as a mage be executed. Look at the crimsons, they have put lava on my friends before asking him to test if he is a vampire or not (which he wasn't!). Then imagine all of the lives of people who could be saved by magic, or the great things we can do with it, all down the drain. What will this extend to? Will enchanted weapons that have magic used on them be banned as well? Will seemingly magical powers like yanar healing be banned to?! when will the restriction of freedoms and genocide stop?!

"Mr. Paloin, I also do not abuse magic, though when I use it, it's often to help people. And by help them, I mean tend to wounds, or assist them with something they cannot accomplish on their own such as giving them a slight boost of speed (with their permission of course) in order to not be late for an important event. I do not use magic in an abusive manner, and if such a way existed that I could prove this to whoever I might need to in order for me to continue helping people, then please point me in the direction of the person." -Adam Aruna

"I personally have never seen a mage offer aid to another person. To be frank, the only magic I have ever seen help people was the magic I used to kill some wolves and save my life. Assuming that friendly mages do exist, something I doubt, there could be an area specifically set for magical use within the city, or perhaps outside it somewhere on the island. As for enchanted weapons and tools I rather doubt you will be wanting to use or have them in the city... it's not like you can use them anyway, after all. And in the announcement that I at least saw they said nothing referring to beings who are magical by nature like Yanar. Finally, I do not believe they will go around executing mages as they merely want to stop the use of magic, not the existence of magic. If that changes, of course, I will no longer support their measures, but until then I see no reason to oppose this except to incite rebellion and spread chaos." - Mr. Paloin

((Just a heads up, Mr. Paloin has had not one pleasant experience with a mage-by-profession in his life, so don't think you can convince him otherwise... it's part of who he is to distrust magic and those who use it regularly))

Sounds like we're going to have another equalist matter on our hands >_<

*Edit* wth is the disagree for? O_o

you expected to come into this debate without any backlash whatsoever?

edit: i'm not trying to be offensive i'm just saying there are two sides to this debate and neither will agree on each others opinions so there will be people who tag things as offensive because they think its better to take personal opinion over logic and just want to flag them as "bad".

"I understand it's hard to believe that people can actually use magic for good. I also wish to be given a chance to prove myself, and though it might not be possible to convince some, I would only theoretically need to convince one person to allow people like myself the chance to show that not all magic is evil, nor are all mages. I'm also willing to be put on heavy watch if ever I was given this chance. However, in order for all of this to be possible, I need to know a person that might be willing to negotiate this with me, if such a thing were even negotiable." -Adam Aruna

My goodness, I post this in the morning and return in the evening to see that it has turned into quite the nuclear fallout here.

In my opinion: I have come across both good and bad mages, both on polar opposite ends of the spectrum. On the bad end rests a mercenary/mage who tried/ was hired to kill my (Aria's) husband. But on the good end is Aria's best friend, who has always used his magic for good purposes. He is not seen out and about too much due to his more reclusive nature (Mister Adam Aruna, haha).

Personally, I think that if they are so concerned about the use of magic and the presences of mages, that they should set up some sort of location for legal licensing of mages. Have mages go through a sort of registration system where they can be tested and assessed for whether their use of magic and the nature of the use is acceptable, hence allowing certain mages to practice the good art freely and to enable the arrest of any that have failed to show good spirit/will and may endanger the public with their magic use.

They exaggerated at the event. In reality you can practice magic with a permit.

This just makes me sick. Why would ANYONE attempt an awakening in public? With all those people around? This was obviously staged, like others have said above. Its a blunt attempt to get rid of magic, and further strip Regalia of any non main humaniod (Elf, dwarf, human) influences. What will come next? Regalia becoming a human only city?

....

I fear I've just jinxed us all...

months i have been telling you. months! but none of you listened your all damned by your ignorance! conspiracy's aside id say this is going to be one interesting turnout -evil smile-. oh and elves are getting screwed with this to, grey or dark skinned elves are wanted even though that means something entirely different from demonic possession. Along with the fact that many elves use magic in their daily lives, id say rainbow's assessment of this event is right on target.

I myself have stayed clear form Regalia until late, it is simply getting to... How to put this... "Tyrannical" with their bans. I highly advise all non humans to seriously consider leaving Regalia. Its only a matter of time now.

"The least those people can do is stay asleep in the streets instead of awake with that attitude. Me watching my friends get murdered is fun, but the heads rolling around ehhh..... mail someone else." Seransic.

So yet another valuable thing has been taken from Regalian citizens: Magic. Sounds to me like the guard and the Inquisition are getting a little worried, with how much they're banning. What are they so afraid of?

Again, I ask, what's next? Every day, these people take one example of something they dislike (or at least a small percentage) and outlaw it completely from the populous. Many say this "magic" business won't affect you, but it will. Even if you don't use magic, and it never has to do with your life, by shrugging this off, it only gives the Inquisition more power to ban something that does affect you. Next they'll be banning people with red hair, because it "supports the demon".

You want a rebellion? Well here it is, friends: The Infernal Resistance. Upon joining, you remain anonymous and continue to stay so unless you wish to expose yourself. Resistance members walk among you every day. And one day, all at once, every one of those people will take a stand to protect those who cannot.

The streets of Regalia will be empty, soon, either because everybody has been executed, or they are all crowded at the doorstep of the Crimson HQ, demanding their freedom.

Which would you prefer?

Even if you're very neutral, it can't hurt to take a look.

Look at the elven lore, Dark skinned elves, or Shadow Elves, actively practice demonic possession. They are characterized by having dark skin. That is why they are being attacked.
