This idea was originally proposed by @Zacatero

The basic idea is simple: a player built & maintained wiki detailing MassiveCraft survival. The factions, the methods, PvP, building styles, world dossiers - the works.

The big talking point is whether or not to make this an open wiki (anyone can edit) or a closed wiki (like what MassiveWiki has). Personally I think public wiki, but with the more likely to be targeted pages locked for safety.

Things this wiki would go over:
  • Factions List - A list of existing factions, with details & lore (if applicable) for each of them. Even including ranking officers & leaders, as well as history (detailed or not) of the faction.
  • Notable Events - A timeline of the MassiveCraft survival world. Would include Wars, World Additions, World Deletions, Major Non-PvP Events, Plugin Changes, ext
  • Player Database - A full list of any player who wants to add themselves and their history to the wiki for people to read.
  • World Dossiers - Dossiers on each of the survival worlds. Would include what the worlds are best used for, the general build style of the world (if applicable), notable locations in that world, and more.
  • Tutorial Pages - Pages that exist to help players get involved in survival world activities. Such pages would be "Basics on Pot-PvP" or "MassiveMobs: When to Fight, When to Run" and the like.
  • More? - I'm not all-knowing, and neither is Zac. I'm sure we've missed some stuff that should be added to a wiki based on the survival worlds of MassiveCraft.
So, what'ya think?

If it's player maintained and built that would help with finding people to maintain it. One thing that you have to remember is that you have to make it clear that what you include there does not reflect the views of Massivecraft and that you are not affiliated with them and it is a fan project. But yeah, I support this idea. I would personally read it and if you ask me I'm sure other roleplayers or non factions players would read it and might give it a shot. I look at it as helpful advertising. So yes, do this.

So basically have a secondary layer wiki that's edited for survival's sake?

Ideally it would be hosted on MassiveCraft, like the other wiki is, but it would be more player run than staff run.

But thats like.. a best case scenario. Not necessarily what it might end up being, if at all.

I'm all for this. We had a wiki like this years ago, but now that we have a dedicated lore wiki, it would probably work out better.

And to answer the question of, why player run instead of staff run

Because a faction wiki would be constantly changing, more so than the lore wiki. And I believe having it player run would be better than staff run because i think staff time would be better used elsewhere tbh.

I guess the main request here is having it hosted with Massive like the lore wiki is, to keep that professional style to it.

@MonMarty, @Omnomivore - What do you think of Zac's request for a MassiveCraft hosted Survival Wiki? I personally don't mind either way so long as it's player-maintained rather than staff-maintained (for reasons Zac listed, and more).

I'm not sure how plausible it is to have a separate wiki and it may become confusing having so many separate sites to review.
It may be more plausible to use the current wiki and devote a section specifically for Factions/Survival/Tutorials. It already has some pages devoted to information pertaining to rules, mods, etc.

Either way, I'll note it as a feature suggestion.

While that might be more plausible in regard to not making it confusing with more than one wiki, but I think that for something of the caliber that we are talking about would kinda require players being able to edit the wiki page about their faction. So thats why my original suggestion separated it from the current wiki, to avoid permissions issues, conflicts, etc

Perhaps some area on the wiki similar to Discussions on normal Wikis, where players can comment with their own factions etc info. Then staff can just glide through every once and a while to check for any .... dumbness... that hasnt been reported to them yet.

Fun fact: MassiveCraft actually had a player run wiki before the current wiki: http://massivecraft.wikia.com/wiki/Massivecraft_Wiki

This wiki is super old, but has over 700+ pages of content you actually can't find on any MassiveCraft hosted website. The content ranges from world dossiers of some of the first worlds such as Ceardia and Daendroc, long since deleted on MassiveCraft. Accounts of players and factions exist as well. There's no way to update this wiki, seeing as the effort would be monumental because of how messy it is, but it's really cool to look back at.

No offense to massive's hosting, but given how normal guys can actually edit I feel wikia would be an excellent area for this, maybe a set of links could be added to the main massivecraft site, the forums, and the lore wiki.

I don't know if this is possible, but if people could create their own pages that only they & wiki admins can edit, that would be an optimal way to set up a Survival section for the wiki. With all due respect, staff don't know everything about factions that the players who founded/run them do, so it would make more sense to give players access.

Not only this, but since the information is changing often, it would make no sense to set up a "player request, staff edit" situation, because the workload could be too great especially when there are other things that staff could be doing with that time. Of course we arent saying "Let us make our own wiki pages so we can say whatever we want" of course staff would still have the ultimate say in moderation, but for creation and maintenance of each page, it would make practical sense to allow the faction leader to be in charge of their own page, IF thats even possible with wiki permissions.

I think this would be extremely helpful- for returning players and new people, as well as those who just haven't done a lot of survival play.

If people can educate themselves on how they can avoid a lot of beginner's grief, I think that'll go a long way toward getting more people into survival worlds.

thats so cool! I'm gunna check it out

This has always been in the back of mind as something we need! I highly support this!

If the staff do not agree to form a wiki I would recommend we set up our own wiki at www.miraheze.org. These guys are a wikifarm but in my opinion are far more helpful when it comes to wiki creation. So if the server does not run their own factions wiki we could establish our own!

I absolutely love the idea of players having their own wiki pages. For example, GetHelp the staff member who overprices everything in his shop so he can get rich. I would also like if some random stories were posted on, for example a story about the always online 413.

I would seggest having a weebly page and a whole bunch of regular players that are allowed to edit it. players could then create post for their own faction then run it past the people allowed to edit... idk, maybe a normal anyone-edits wiki would work better

Its essentially the basis of the idea, but we'd like it to be hosted like the Massive wiki is, on massive. Therefore it wouldnt be "anybody can edit"
