Ok here's another suggestion for Factions V2. Add another type of land claim in. This one would be called "siege fortifications" or something like that and they would be allowed to be built 6 chunks away from a land claim instead of 16. In siege fortifications anyone can break or place beds and ladders. This makes it so people could effectively siege a city by claiming land 6 chunks away from it and building trenches and bunkers in that land claim.

If possible I would like something else too. Here's a pretty radical suggestion. Make it so people can use prem and tnt cannons to break blocks TEMPORARILY. The blocks will be gone for about 10-20 minutes before they regenerate. I say 10-20 minutes because I want the effect to be rather long lasting. If you implement this idea, this could lead to a much more interesting city warfare mechanic. Just remember this, people can only build cannons 6 chunks away from you, that's 96 BLOCKS. This insures that raiders have to make some pretty impressive cannons to get a explosive to shoot that far. This also gives the defenders an advantage. Defenders could bombard the attackers easily, considering the fact that their walls give them a height advantage. The defenders could then counter attack and charge into the fortifications, breaking beds and routing the attackers. The attackers could also try to bust a hole in the defenders walls, forcing cities to now make thicker walls. I suggest that if this is implemented that Massivecraft make it so Obsidian will break under explosive bombardment, however it will take several hits. This ability to bombard will also lead to some pretty nice war damage as houses and buildings will (temporarily) be reduced to rubble under the attacker's artillery fire. That's the suggestion right now, I might add more.

The thing is, right now you can hide in a house and NO ONE CAN GET YOU! It completely ruins the pacing and momentum of the raid. You know, my brother knows how to make a cannonball launch over 300 blocks with only 16 TNT... o_o

Not gonna say how though. :p

So to be honest, people who don't know how to make much more than basic cannons are going to be roughly at this stage of the cannons as you mentioned, but what if the block re-appears when a player is in it, or what if it glitches and just doesn't come back in general...?
Cool and badass an idea this is, it might make it a bit rough on the server, as if multiple people are raiding, the races slows it down, the players slow it down, the McMMo slows it down, and then respawning and exploding blocks are really going to make the server stressed if you think about it. :\
 
Wait, you mean actual vanilla tnt cannons? Why would people use those when we have a cannon plugin?
 
This will probably be rejected because it would cause massive lag with the block break and block regen.

I'm glad you separated this from your other, "radical" idea so it can be discussed on its own. I agree with the what most people are saying about the block destruction/regen being too impractical to be implemented (both because of strain on the server and sheer complexity I imagine such a feature involving). But having a special area where you can temporarily construct siege equipment is a brilliant idea, and likely easily implemented. It would allow players to be creative while laying siege, even building trebuchets and catapults (that obviously don't work) without having their efforts wasted when the defender just walks out and tears it down while the attackers are offline. (imo) it would add a unique RP element to sieges as the attackers prepare their machines of war and the defenders watch their cities surrounded by a heavily encamped foe.

On another note, after Cayorion's recent post about factions and sharding ( http://massivecraft.com/factions-v2-and-sharding ), it looks like he won't be adding any features right now. But once sharding is done I imagine he'll start working on implementing some of the amazing features that have been put on hold, and I hope this siege area will make it on that list.
 
Actually I've played on quite a few servers that have implemented the block regen feature. And to the lag problem, I'm hoping that server sharding will be able to take it. Second, no it will not grief the enviroment because it regenerates. Third, the blocks blown up by tnt will not drop according to my suggestion.

Just mainly cause of the block regen lag. I have seen many server where they have a block regen going on and they don't lag, but i've seen twice as many that lag really hard. Plus with a server like massive with almost 200 people on all the damn time, i think it would be more of a burden to everyone. Still a good idea, and i applaud you for it.[DOUBLEPOST=1366314998,1366314942][/DOUBLEPOST]But then again, if the server sharding does take care of it.....yeah i guess it would work in practice as well as theory.

You can't say that until this plugin idea actually BEEN practiced and turned out to be bad. All we are doing right now is theorizing.

Anyways, I'm not sure how I feel about the cannons, but I really like the first suggestion. I think it should at least be considered by the team for factions, even if it doesn't get put into the latest upcoming update.
 
So you can claim land closer to your enemy!
 
I want to add in that you can place tnt on anyone's faction and it would automatically be lit doing the temporary block explosion thing
 
No, that idea is very VERY abusable. That basically makes it so you can blow a hole in anyone's base with minimal work. I made the 4 chunk thing to make people WORK to siege a town, not just run around placing tnt.[DOUBLEPOST=1366831163,1366429052][/DOUBLEPOST]Soooo any more admin replies?

Not an admin, but if the cannon idea is implemented then I'm glad I built Castle Mirk on top of THE only hill/mountain in over 20 chunks in any direction... lol, shoot me now, B*tches!
 
I would actually like a experienced minecraft "engineer" to tell me what the maximum range of a tnt cannon is. I would like to encourage armies to have a distinct class of engineers which make extremely powerful cannons, not armies that have random people making basic tnt cannons.

Normal tnt use cannons? and how much tnt would you like to be used? I can PERHAPS make one of my cannons go about 500 or more blocks. I can test it.

about 120 or so blocks with 10 tnt. Thats like a decent distance. I did manage to get one to go farther, an estimation of 160 blocks. but my loading glitched and i couldnt find the crater :(I can do better though :) One thing, is it 10 tnt for all tnt placings? like the one to fly too? because i did 9 to launch, and one to fly.
EDIT: it loaded.
EDIT 2: I conducted a few tests, and they were about the ~145 mark, but i only uploaded a few screenshots on the testing.

Ah then I'll change it back to 6 chunks, as I said, I don't want to make it easy. Also, having an enemy army 64 blocks away from your walls is a bit too close for comfort.
 
I'm still debating if it should be further away, but I think 96 blocks is good enough now.

Yea, considering Gunpowder is something somewhat hard to get. However, most of the people who DO have it have a dark room, and have a good amount. This should be you need EFFORT, and make a cannon slower than 30 seconds. If i saw that base, and i had enough, that base would have 2 craters by the time they get to me. (not boasting, reload is quick)
