Hey guys.

What if we start our own race languages, to increase roleplay. Let's say I use words from the language Kzuzdul in the chat and a other player will respond back with the same language.

Example
------------
Dwarf - chat writing = Kzuzdul (J.R Tolkien language) It's the most complete dwarf language i can find on the internet. Along side, Warhammers dwarf language named Khazalid. And one other.

These are a few words from J.R Tolkien language.(dwarf)

"Great fortress" = Gabilbagathol

"Locked-doors" = Hudnul-meden

"Marketsquare" = Manarbul

"Return" = Gugûn
"Bat" = khafush
Common sayings.(dwarf)
"Excuse me/Sorry = Birashagimi
Excuse me (Asking to pass trough) = Gasatafra
"I wish you a safe journey" = Mahzirikhi zu gang ghukhil
"Thank you" = Akminruk zu
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Off course we can make our own languages. But why not use existing ones, that are amazing. Just look on the internet. I do need to say that the above language is pretty hard. So maby we can use a simpler form, like Khazalid. just look Warhammer dwarf language.
And yes it will take time to learn words. But it would be awesome. We can open scholars of the ancient tongues/languages. We can make entire dictionaries. Book and quil.
Another awesome thing is. Most work will be done by the loyal player base, off course moderators can help.
I would do the dwarf language. Because i RP a dwarf.
So what do you guys think?

I guess you /could/ just make a cipher for your faction to use.

I quite like this idea. Although I should also inform you that roleplay languages was to be a future update to the chat system (Though with sharding and all this probably will not not be added for a while). As a reference I will link what was posted on the Massive Craft website, just scroll down to future features. http://massivecraft.com/new-chat-system

I believe there was an idea like this for the race pluggin that the admin had, but did not implement it, where it looked as if normal english between the same race but races not of that race (with exception of humanoind races like elves and dwarves) Like for example, a maiar saying "Hi how are you?" looked like "hw hwo rae ouy?" to non maiar races. Or something like that, idk it dosnt matter because admin either changed their minds about it or have not implemented it yet. Probably changed their minds but idk.

No more school, this would be too hard to learn. :(

I just think the language stuff is fine but it could be on ancient scrolls instead of the actual chat. Ancient scrolls make it more medieval and only scholars can read them.

Scrolls have more potential of making past history become future history and more RP too. The scrolls could reveal a new race, power, darkness within the city of Regalia.

I like this idea a lot. But I think that learning the language would be to difficult and a lot of people just simply don't have time for it. It could also lead so the players would stop playing massivecraft which we all don't want to happen. But it could maybe be done in the way ( depends on youre race ) that if you maybe talk in local it would be crypted so the players see what they type but unless you aren't in the same race you wouldn't see the words they write. But you would maybe be able to change your language to normal letters by maybe using /language, lang off/on [flip]. But I only suggest it if it would be possible. Yes I know it would take major time for Cay and the other admins to fix that way. But everybody can probably help out.

Of course depends in youre race you would see different languages which also fits the lore books. I love the lore books
And it would be good to insert it in there or do something. Because learning the language would maybe take to long and people wouldn't be so "energetic" to learn it. ( but its different for every people ).

There is a plugin (Im not sure) that has made up language setting things so if you put /orc it will appear to orc races as English while the other races only hear gibberish.
Also if some tweaking with the plugin people could learn other races language but everyone can speak English

I myself use a bit of Tolkein elvish when I role-play, but, if someone doesn't want to use such languages, they certainly should not be forced to. If you yourself want to use languages, by all means go ahead. But it's not going to be an "official thing".

Languages in minecraft would help diversify the races and boost the lore.

I read the lore a while back on races and it says X lives hear and Y lives hear but none of the races are all mixed up in every faction like it is now.

If you could not understand another race language and can only read English when talking to someone of the same race then this would get same races together. You would also not have to learn the other race languages unless you really feel like interacting with them, If you had to but did not know how then you could hire someone that knows the language to do the interacting for you (translators would be a well paying profession)
Should also have it so your character knows only 1 language at a time and you can switch which language he speaks every like say 2 weeks but only from your race language to global language being english, the game will not translate what you say when your speaking in global language.
Players could do this while they learn to speak their races language then be able to talk in global (english) and talk in their native language without the translations occurring.

I also think that we should try not to make up languages and use some that are already invented and extremely popular at that. The reason is because it would encourage other fantasy fans to join the server because they will already know these languages and they could help bring some of the culture to massive.

The global language could be the language of humans for humans are to be the default race where not so RP people should be encouraged to use.

Personally I think that you should not be able to switch between global and your race language but I don't know if it would be to much... I mean you don't have to be able to talk to every player in the game anyway.

though the flip side is that if you learn your own races language then you should be able to be set free from the translator and speak it on your own.

Its very sketchy and confusing and I am just throwing out some ideas from the top of my head... Don't troll me.

This will never become official. You may use it with friends, or even your own faction, but it will never be made official. For two reasons:
  1. Not everyone has access to study it.
  2. Not many people would take the time to study it.
I, personally, really do like the idea, but it will not happen.

there could be some form of translation command that changes the language of what you just wrote to your races language (i.e. "/t I once cut a banana man with my axe!" and it would come out something different)

But as i said. You woudn't need to study the language. It would take to long time and people would loose their ''feel'' for playing. So that's why it would be much more easier if the /ch la (which means the language chat for each race) would be differently crypted depends on what sort of race you have at that moment. Because if it would be crypted the people who are the same race would be able to see what they are writing meanwhile the others see it as the race language is added. It would be great to see how it would look like in the RP world, for example if someone started to RP as a translator and etc.

Yes I belive crypting a language is hard, and it would be even more harder for the one who makes it because he would need to come up with a language for every race and coming race in the server. That takes not less then 4 month and could delay the entire projects. (Unless they are of course divided up to a large number of groups. But it would still take as long time.)

Massivecraft has a firm belief in not mindlessly taking other content from fictional works, that said I am extremely in favor of racial languages in the RP universe. I think that over the centuries that have passed the races have all unified into using one "common tongue", but there would still remain the old ways of speaking in each races language.

Since I have been so interested in the idea of racial languages, I have begun designing my own for the "Nymph" Yanar, this is a completely unofficial language that I am creating (so this won't be anything to do with the chat system and what race you are, but if you actually know this language), but I am hopeful that once it is more fleshed out I can make a guide to speaking it. Allowing those scholars among you to learn it for yourself and read ancient Yanar scripts.

I think that this is a fun little idea, however I don't think we should just use pre-fabricated languages due to the fact that lacks in originality.

To prove I am writing this language, here is a sentence with correct grammar and everything I have worked on so far :
besëořs junca at cřesřetořs ainyeu cřemřo a me
which roughly translates to "
I am young and I appear to want everyone to come to me." (I know it is a random sentence, but with the vocabulary I have done at the moment it is all I got)

There is no need for a plugin. It would be a waste of resources. If you truly want a language, do as Ben_2025 has. Create one, and actually work on it.

Google can translate things fast and even do the spelling correction to it.
I would not say it is impossible.

I think that having a command that freely toggles what you say to your race language is a great idea and same command also makes it so words in your race language are translated for you as well.
This would give people of the same race the ability to talk to others of their race without having to learn the language if they do not want to and at the same time allowing people of the same race that know the language not need to ... I lost my train of thought but you know what I am trying to say.[DOUBLEPOST=1368656332,1368656121][/DOUBLEPOST]I would find it pointless to learn the made up languages only used in massivecraft.
I would like to be able to use the language elsewhere.
And I am sure that people that already know one of these languages would be ecstatic about joining massive where they can use it.

Google is a multi-billion company. That is one of the major flaws in what you just said. Again, it would be a waste of resources if we were to do that. Create your own translator and give it to your friends if you want.[DOUBLEPOST=1368656414,1368656360][/DOUBLEPOST]We will never, I repeat never, use a real language for Massive as a race language. It would limit the people who could use it.

I completley understand. (Btw i like the signature ^)

Untill we have a plugin for teaching people languages that could be implemented trough a language plugin, we can't really do anything about this suggestion. We have considered a language plugin for a long time. The base language for the Naga is actually already done.

As said before, until the question plugin comes out and a translation plugin is made, we don't incorporate any languages.

Just a note on the language plugin: There should be a way to switch from Race to General (that is, make it so people can learn/know a 'universal' language to commune). Perhaps also have the ability for factions to 'buy' languages so that what they say in their language comes out scrambled or indecipherable. That way enemies can't understand their planning.

My honest opinion on race-based languages is that if there is no plugin for it I will never learn it. I'm just a dumb white kid from Merica, I couldn't even learn how to speak Spanish (which is supposed to be the easiest language to learn for Engrish folks). I can use Bing Translate (used it to speak to a Swedish guy an give him directs) but that takes forever lol.

Actually a certain Cowboy was working on a plugin like that a few months ago. I don't remember why ever happened to it.

It was never finished because I did not have enough time/interest to work with Cowboys full time on the project at that time, and he never asked me again afterwards, which threw the project into obscurity.

Case closed.
