*PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS JUST A RUMOR, AND HAS LITTLE FACTS TO PROVE IT. THERE IS NO NEED FOR ALARM. DO NOT CAUSE ANY FEAR MONGERING. THIS IS ONLY A HEADS UP OF POSSIBLE FUTURE EVENTS INVOLVING MINECRAFT.

In very recent news, there is a rumor that Mojang is going to be bought by Microsoft. What this means, I didn't know. However, here is what we do know:

A while ago, Markus Perrson (aka. Notch) stated that he would be interested in selling Minecraft to Microsoft for no less then $2,000,000,000 USD. Mojang would go with this sale, and any other games by Mojang.

Recently, something related to Mojang sold for, you guessed it, 2billion USD. It is believed to be related to a Microsoft buyout. Neither company has made any statements, but this is not quite out of the question.

The Wall Street Journal did a report on this, and came to the same conclusion of Microsoft. "What could this mean about Minecraft" is the question I am sure is on all of your minds. Well, to be honest, I have no idea. No one does. However, it should be noted that Microsoft is a big name business. They may take a more financial approach to Minecraft. Most likely, Minecraft will just be one everything Microsoft.

There are some theories on what may happen. Keep in mind that these are just that, theories. No statements to back them up. Some ideas are that there may be a stricter rule enforcement, mods may be scrutinized, cloud integration, different server hosting services, etc. Again, these are simple theories and mean nothing. The opposite may actually be true.

This is nothing to be worried about. Definitely not yet. I implore you to keep an eye out for future news. Feel free to post what you find here. But for now, play as usual, and have fun. We are sure to get a statement in the next couple of weeks. Remember, this all means nothing until something is said. And if this is true, and there is a change or two, the staff is sure to be able to find something to do about it if anything needs to be done at all.

This is just a simple heads up for a possible thing in the future. Again, this doesn't mean anything, and is just a simple rumor. Please don't cause any fear mongering, spam, flame, or unnecessary panic. It is all okay. Just go about your day as normal. Maybe do some research to learn some more things. Everything is all right.

According to an article that I read, the most likeley change is that minecraft will now be on all of Microsoft's products.

They better not make it Windows only /if/ this happens.
I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO BUY A NEW COMPUTER TO PLAY MINECRAFT.

But ew microsoft. I mean, PCs are great and everything, but the whole microsoft vibe is super cheesy. They just seem ugh to me.

Meanwhile in microsoft headquarters:
Boss: Now what will piss off the fans the most...
Some guy: Monthly paying!
Another guy: Get rid of it altogether!
Slacker: How about we don't piss them off?
-boss throws slacker out the window-

Unless they do something amazingly stupid like making it pay-to-play multiplayer I don't see how they could possibly manage to screw up minecraft.

-upgrades graphics so that everything isn't blocky anymore-

YOU FIENDS!

I hope this isn't going to be some Bungie selling Halo to 343 type of stuff. I was pretty angry when they did that, and hopefully Microsoft will not disappoint us horribly.

The only thing I see them doing is making it Windows only, as they compete with iMacs and that OS. [Actually, maybe not, as iMacs can run Windows.]

This sounds highly unlikely... Since there's no statement from either Mojang or Microsoft, we have no reason to believe this is anything more than a rumor that the internet has taken and ran with.

i don't want to be mean or so but, in that hypothetical case that microsoft does buy minecraft and thus owns it, they will screw it up somehow, if they don't then i eat my pc without salt (and tehy get a +546 faith in humlanity restoration)
this be joke, sort of

Pretty unlikely since Minecraft is already for Mac, I mean do you think they would really just remove a chunk of the player base at random? Do you think they think those players would instantly go out and buy pc's? I think this fear is very much unrealistic so if thats your biggest fear for the buyout I'd put it to rest.

The fact that only one organization has reported it is also slightly suspect... Everyone else is just reporting on the reporting of the wall-street journal's report.

'Endorse your crap' does not mean 'sell Minecraft.' Point 1 seems to have no backing therefore. Also, please cite a source for point 2.

Microsoft buying Mojang makes a lot of sense. And considering how silent it is from all the Mojang employees now,I Think its also happening.
We have reason to believe that Marcus may be a bit tired and sad after all the reactions from community and server owners in regards to the Eula. The following is from a twitter in Jun

"Anyone want to buy my share of Mojang so I can move on with my life? Getting hate for trying to do the right thing is not my gig."

We have knowned all the time what he thinks about pay to win and micro transactions in games.
I Think he is ready to sell.

Now, why do Microsoft want to buy Mojang? It sure does still bring in a lot of money and a good drive for Xbox sales.
However, I believe most people is missing the greater picture here. I Think we need to look at the social part and community's of Minecraft.
Microsoft major focus now is cloud computing.
They for sure want to close the gap on Amazon Web Services. This means Realms, of cource, BUT more important, to host private servers. Microsoft will probably support pluggin developers etc in a much more prominent way then Mojang.
Microsoft is probably going to help and provide the communitys with better tools and also rely on the comunity more then Mojang developers, to add features to minecraft.

I think the Bukkit team had an awful bad timing in the decision to freeze development.
lot of them ill probably cry over missed opportunities in years to come

I think the only people to lose if Microsoft gets Mojang is the curent mojang employees.

^This. It's ridiculous to think that they would effectively kick out a huge chunk of the players when Microsoft is interested in keeping that audience. I can't imagine they'd change anything major, perhaps they may enforce the EULA restrictions, but that'd likely take a month or more to get into effect, and it's probably not something to worry about now as this sale is just a rumor.

If this goes through I might seriously leave Minecraft for the pure hatred I have towards the Windows/Microsoft business and OS. Seriously though, whilst Microsoft's acquisitions of MC wouldn't be a bad thing, the statement that says Notch and a few of the leaders of MC might leave makes me sad.

This almost echo what I wrote a few days ago :)

"The Minecraft community is passionate and diverse, ranging across all ages and demographics. We respect the brand and independent spirit that has made Minecraft great, and we'll carry on the tradition of innovation to move the franchise forward. Our investments in cloud, Xbox Live and mobile technology will enable players to benefit from richer and faster worlds, more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect with the Minecraft community."

Sadya Natella has made it clear that they hope to keep Microsoft on iOS, Android, Playstation as well as their own systems. There seems to be a lack of OSX/Mac there...? That said, it's highly unlikely that they will remove it from iMac, but there may be created a small divide.
