NOBLE HOUSE BIGGE
Family Lore and History
The Bigge name has been present, in one form or another, throughout Aloria for many years. The earliest record of the name dates back to 98 AC, with the growing Regalian Empire. At the time recognised as House Bigglah, it is still speculated how family members made their way to the Empire, as it was clear they were of Northerne origin; tough and brutal by nature. It is believed family members signed onto the Imperial Navy upon seeing the domination it had on the Nordskagger Horde, the family living as sailors for much of the Wars. The family continued to live this way for over a century, creating quite a reputation in the Naval scene.
However, in 211 AC, the family made the choice to claim land in Ceardia after hearing news of the Empire's arrival there. A lot of the family saw opportunity in the growing Empire and wanted to be known as more than just "good sailors". The elder of the family, Nathaniel Bigglah, decided to take a risk and change the House's name, in an attempt to adapt to Imperial-Ceardian culture. Many members complained as they did not want to abandon the House's barbarian-like routes and lose their reputation. These members eventually fled the family to continue life as they were, the Bigglah name still living on today. However, the Bigglah family was now formally recognised as House Bigge. The newly formed House Bigge began to work on the land, hoping to find success in some way or another. The family lived on the continent for a long time, making profit off of the lumber the land had to offer. However, when the Void Tendrils attacked in 268 AC, many members of House Bigge were wiped out. Those that survived fled to New Ceardia, forced to start their lives over.
In the following year of 269 AC, at the age of 25, Marcus Roger Bigge was Patriarch of the family after his father perished due to wounds inflicted in the Tendril attack. Though they secured land in their new location, the family had been out of luck for a while now; all of their livelihood and profit had been dragged into the Void along with their home continent. Money from the family's Naval men was just not cutting it anymore. That is when Marcus had an idea...
That same year, Bigge Nautical Resources was established. Marcus had acquired a small workhouse where he employed men and women to assemble one item: Compasses. Though a simple device, compasses were in high demand throughout the Empire. With the business growing, compasses were soon accompanied by astrolabes, which were soon accompanied by bowsprits until eventually the company was producing such things as mizzenmasts and capstans. While the business did not focus on ship assembly, like many other successful Noble Houses, it was successful due to its fast production of specific ship parts that were often overlooked.
Meanwhile, Marcus was making himself known to the locals. He was a quiet man, but enjoyed a good social gathering now and then. It was through one of Marcus' feasts that he met Angelica Smorn, a seamstress for the town's mayor. They soon fell in love, meeting with each other as often as they could. In mid-269 AC, Angelica fell pregnant, to the shock of Marcus. Both being devote Unionists, they were soon married. Marcus felt that a political marriage with a richer House would have been more beneficial, but the Smorn family were still quite well off due to their trade in cloth. It was decided that the family would be absorbed through marriage and that House Bigge would take the final profits of their business before closing it down and using the workhouse for their own. On March the 29th 270 AC, Angelica went into a sudden labor. The birth went on through the night, but in the early hours of the next day, a baby boy was born. He was named Nathaniel William Bigge after Nathaniel, the elder who made tough sacrifices for the family's survival and William Smorn, Angelica's late father.
Once the Chrysant War began, the need for equipment exceeded previous rates, and Bigge Naval Resources provided a lot of the tools and parts used. The family had previously agreed they would send a man into war to represent the business; the task now fell to Marcus. Marcus fought for 4 years, from 287 AC to 291 AC. When he returned, he was greeted with a family he did not recognise, his child now being much older. For the next years, Marcus worked as hard as he could and brought his family new fortune and fame. Angelica brought him more children, though he mainly cared for Nathaniel. Marcus passed in the summer of 302 AC at the age of 53. He was closely followed by Angelica who died just months later. Nathaniel was left as Patriarch and with control of the business, where he secured men as levies and bought land in the Archipelago, which was titled Norswick. It was clear Nathaniel had high aspirations for his House.
Currently, House Bigge is one of the few organised noble families of the central region in Gallovia, bordering the Aeld Forests and the Gauld mountains. Norswick is relatively unpopulated, the majority of the population concentrated in Framingdon from where wood products are often packaged and sent off to House Heinrich, which House Bigge has strong relations with. House Bigge continued to rival with nearby hamlets and towns over deforestation and destruction of hunting grounds for the locals outside their titled lands. During the reign of Queen Freya Lo, the Bigge family found themselves residing in the Coen establishments, where they made strong allies. After the war, House Bigge found themselves on the rise within the Empire. Family members had secured places within the new government, leading to more political power.
Current holdings
Shire of Lowton, New Ceardia - Held By The Family
- Greatwood Castle:
- The Bigge's home lodgings, Greatwood Castle is located on a small island off of the shore of Lowton. Surrounded by dense woodland, the Castle is hardly visible when the trees are in full blossom, giving the castle its name.
- Movenhard:
- One of the biggest towns in Lowton, Movenhard holds the Shire's most bustling and popular harbour. Occupied by fishermen, traders and the many of the Bigge-made-boats, this was the birthplace of the Bigge's flagship, the Vehement.
Barony of Norswick in Gallovia - Held By Nathaniel Bigge
- Anchored Keep:
- Anchored Keep is the current home of most of the Bigge family. Named in response to the family's naval routes, it is secluded from most of the hustle and bustle of the Barony.
- Capital of Framingdon:
- Being the Barony's main source of import and export, the Capital lives up to the family's name. With no shortage of sea defences, the city is well looked after from the outside, as well as within; with a close and loyal community.
- City of Gordon:
- The second largest city within Norswick, Gordon holds no impact on the Bigge's main trade. Instead, most of its economy is based upon the lumbering of wood in the area.
- Galloway Pass:
- The most northern road leading in and out of Norswick. The Gallow Pass marks the border of Norswick in the North, with a road that leads towards the Holwester's land of Galloway, who are close allies with the Bigges.
Chancellor of Norswick - Held By Marcus Bigge
- Watching over the people, the Chancellor of Norswick manages the Barony's economy, law and general politics.
Lady of Framingdon - Held By Martha Bigge
- Though recognised as the official leader of Framingdon, the Lady of Framingdon holds no additional power over the City than any other Bigge. Instead, management is left to the Mayor.
Bigge Naval Resources - Family Company
- With factories all over Lowton and Norswick, the Bigge's business operates all around the Archipelago. The Bigge family business, 'Bigge Nautical Resources', is a successful business that prides itself in fast equipment production. Many of the Imperial Navy's masts, capstans and bowsprits are provided by the organisation. A common misconception is that House Bigge build ships, when they do not. Their business instead entails the craftsmanship of more detailed ship parts, which are later sold to shipyards.
