From the depths of the forest of Tirgunn, a small island situated between Anglia and Calemberg, a pious man known as Karel af Fenikstörn was born. Filled with love of the Spirit and a devotion that could not be snuffed despite the many trials that lay before him, such as the monstrous beast and demons that were said to haunt the isle's woods, Karel made his way south on a tiny hand crafted boat of dark oak that flourished around him. It is said in the annals of the Fenikstörn history that he spent eight days and nights aboard the vessel before finally arriving on the holy land of Basta.
His dedication to the Spirit was admirable and he was admitted to Seminary immediately - or as soon as he was capable of attending, his woulds and exhaustion forcing Karel to be bedridden. It is in this bedridden time that he was said to have a vision. Again, he crossed the salty waters of the sea, but it was a long and perilous journey to a chaotic land where savages rained blood and steel upon the holy flock of the Sancella; like wolves they hunted the innocent sheep of a foreign land. His fever dreams ended as quickly as they began and his true test began: training at the Seminary. However, Karlen's graduation was quick to come as those overseeing the young man were impressed with his passion and eagerness to learn. Such a compassionate man would best be used in the unruly colonies of Essalonia. His vision was slowly coming true, and upon this realization, the holy flame that resided within him roared to life. His mission work was like a wildfire across the western coast of Essalonia. Within a few years the Curate was chosen for a newly found - and newly built - verwaltung. He had spent those years laying the foundation, both literally and spiritually, for the holy place and felt blessed to offer the savage tribes a place to come to the light.
With the house of worship came not only a congregation, but a community. Homes and farms soon began to pop up around the eight pillared building and within the decade a true town had formed. Yet, civilization brought another thing to the barbaric lands: a distinction between those that dwelled within the stone walls of the church and the heretics outside. The other. And the other was ferocious. Fearful of what was to come after the first attack left more half of the small settlement ablaze, Karlen prayed. Eight days and nights he fasted and prayed until another vision was blessed upon him. It was that of a mighty forge, bellowing in the night, and fueled by the remains of the wooden structures that had been lost. From the forge a mighty bird of fire and light would be born, and strike down the enemies of the Spirit. In reality, this was partially true. He ordered one to be be built within the walls of the abbey and had a smith use what little wood was left to spark the initial blaze in the belly of the forge. Weapons were made, the people armed, and soon they were ready to fight for their home. A final sermon was given by Karlen, and in his everlasting words, "From ashes we rise!"
And rise they did. The abbey expanded beyond its original borders and the town grew into thriving coastal city with the Reverend Karlen marrying Betje, the daughter of the smith who had struck the first blow to the anvil that led to this growth. Thus, the af Fenikstörn line was born with the birth of Dirck af Fenikstörn. His childhood was one of fire and steel, his mother teaching him in the ways of her own father. One may even say he was forged himself in the same flames that once saved the verwaltung. Despite his own skill at the forge and the longsword that had been passed to him, he was not able to safeguard the walls alone. It was then that Karlen called upon not the Spirit, but his family in Tirgunn.
Word was quick to arrive at the dark island and aide arrived within the week: his cousins, second cousins, uncles, this and that twice or thrice removed - varying members of House af Fenikstörn had come to make their presence known. They trained the newest addition of their family, Dirck, in the ways of their homeland. In the ways of a Darkwald. The newly made Knight and his cousins easily dealt with the savage clans that came to attack - their abbey forged weapons far superior to that of the simple spears and handaxes that the savages used - and the settlement finally found peace, and Dirck love.
Generations passed and the coastal city prospered, as did the af Fenikstörn who oversaw this opulence. Their work did not go unnoticed by the Kingdom of the Silver Shores and soon the family was graced with the title of "friherre" and their lands formally incorporated into the Kingdom as a friherreskab. Now minor nobility, they took to increasing their personal wealth as not only the finest silver smiths - their other metal work was fine as well - but also as glass blowers. It was a delicate art, but one highly sought after by their Tirgunn cousins as it allowed them to have a monopoly of sorts on every Sanguine hunter's favorite weapon: Holy Water. Their ties to the Synod enabled quick and easy access to the shimmering liquid, and using the specially crafted spheres of glass or hætteglas, they weaponized it and sold it around the globe. In fact, they even offered an insurance policy to those who frequented their stores: return with three of their signature caps (silver corks with the Fenikstörn seal) and they would offer a free hætteglas to the hunter. While it was a business, the Fenikstörn sought to rid the world of Aberrants and were willing to lose some coin if it meant better preparing those who went out in the world to do so.
Due to this very blood mixing with the colonies, their hair is - instead of the black of their Regalian roots - varying shades of brown, sometimes even a dirty blonde. These hues of oak and chestnut are more often than not found atop curly headed boys and girls alike. How curly, however, seems to be at random. Colonial life has guaranteed a surprise upon each new addition to the family as there have been those with curls so tight they seem to cling to the scalp while others have looser curls; even wavy hair. It is often bouncy in nature and has led many a girl to become a Crystal Maiden: for not only do the af Fenikstörn possess luscious locks but the voices of angels who are soft and whimsical, capable of reaching notes so high they touch the heavens - those of the female, and rarely male, gender that is. Yet, men are not excused from their hearty bellowing voices, as many have dedicated their life to church service, either by joining a choir ir leading one as a Reverend as their ancestors once did.
Their towering stature leant the af Fenikstörn to roles of beauty and command as most, even the woman, stood at or above six foot. It was such that not all a Fenikstörn took their duty to the faith seriously. Some used their height and Spirit blessed features like high cheekbones to participate in… uncouth occupations. From actors, entertainers, models - the list goes on but it boils down to a core belief that art is not something an af Fenikstörn should waste their time with, save for the art of the forge. They would be better off joining their family in Tirgunn as Darkwald or sent to Basta to become a Reverend, Virgin Blade, or Silent Sister.Even joining the local church choir; the point being that the Church offered far more opportunity than they would ever finding within the secular world.
For it is within the Church that the morals and ethics of the af Fenikstörn were forged. They are strict Unionist (Sancella of course) and detest all Aberrations, backwards savages as well: Velheim, Kathar, Varran, and Orcs. Aside from their stonewalled sense of justice they are known to have fiery tempers and dark senses of humor to truly make most af Fenikstörn difficult to handle for extended periods of time. They are best left to their solitude and night owl tendencies, to study either the scripture or Aberrant lore, who knows.
As the silver mines were plentiful on the coast of the Silver Shores, the family found wealth in producing fabulous jewelry and stunning works of art from the precious metal while also creating fierce and battle proven weapons at their ancient forge. This same forge heats the odd combination of sand, soda ash, and varying minerals to create not only works of art, but weapons of destruction. The forges of the af Fenikstörn run hot and often to create the delicate and specially crafted bottles that become Holy Water projectiles. So whether it be silver, sand, or even black steel, the af Fenikstörn smiths and jewelers are have their mighty forge are ready to blaze.
A vocation the af Fenikstörn also partake in is that of religious life. Men are often sent of to the knightly orders - particularly the Darkwald of home - as well as Reverends and Fathers of Piety, the latter having been used often to send off second and third sons when their inability to leave the castle was too much for their fathers to bare. The women of their line take up work as Silent Sisters, Celestial of Mercy, Crystal Maidens, or Virgin Blades depending on where their skill - and value to their family - lay. These lives dedicated to the Spirit have always granted the af Fenikstörn relatively happy and good terms with the Synod.
Details will be coming concerning individual members, but until such time, feel free to apply and create your own. Also, this tree will be updated with new characters as more are created.
