So, I remember hearing about how certain animals can't be role played. I remember hearing that you can only play domesticated animals or something like that and I would search through qnas for hours to find this but it would be hard on my phone but here is my idea: expanding what animals you can role play as. I don't see why people can't role play as giant spiders when the wiki clearly states that wild spiders infest the sewers. This can go on.
So there are a few ways this could happen.
We could write strict limitations on what animals you can play and expand th to certain animals or....
We can put this into the hands of the players. If someone wants to rp as something, they should have general cause for the compliance of that animal in that place.
Say you see a person roping as a nenya in the sewers, you would generally avoid them due to in compliance as all nenya are dead. This would be generally up to the player. So say you are jumped by someone roping a giant spider in the sewers, you would likely respond as the sewers should be filled with giant spiders. This applies to many cases and I think this would be beneficial to rp and can even be expand surface rp in certain ways.

While this list applied more to the old pets plugin, the general idea is still applied in RP. Don't RP something that wouldn't normally be found in an environment.

case in point: moi. Usually when I'm bored out of my mind or feel like spectating events, I'll disguise myself as a Vile Rat, Sewer Rat, Kitten, Dog, bird, etc. I don't ask permission, I just do it. However, I also keep in mind the general atmosphere of Regalia. I don't run up to the Imperial Palace as a cow, because that would be incompliant and stupid. Instead, I'd go to the fields round Rothburg and play as a cow, since that is appropriate. Technically I could walk down the street as a cow, but without another player acting as my farmer, it would be disruptive.

In short, use common sense when RPing. If the animal isn't common in the area, don't RP as it.

That's what the main idea is though, there are a few things that could happen that would make sense that we can't rp. One example would be the giant spider though, what I am mainly asking for here is a revision

I'd just go with common sense. Play a Giant Spider if you want, but be sure to be very careful with the lore to not break the way they are designed.

It's kinda why I don't play Vile Rats anymore, because it can be hard to infect people with Mind Rot if they aren't taking you seriously.

That's the thing, we need a way to recognize these people so the roleplay can actually work

I just /d <animal> and /nick <name of animal>

I would like to see some random sewer creatures introduced for this purpose honestly. just weird random monsters that people can RP as to stir RP.

I have the need to tag @Beetletoes as he seems to be familiar with hoards and the like.
thanks for the tag, I'll drop my own thoughts.

It's like playing a certain race. Just be reasonable about it. You would need to stick to that animal's physical and mental capabilities in traits, it's like a dumbed-down version of playing a person of a race. You wouldn't expect to see a Lampar throwing fireballs, and you wouldn't expect a Grashobaig or a Haurmann to do that either. I think what staff are afraid of is people powergaming, but that's no different an issue than powergaming (for example) Orcs so strong they can break a solid block of steel over their leg. There's really nothing else beyond that that I can see. If an animal is played wrong, just make a ticket like you would for someone powergaming or disrupting rp. If they're played right, then you'll have a new, fun and entertaining experience.
Of course another limitation would be the habitat of the animal. No way you'd see Frosthorns in the sewers or surface but Giant Spiders? They have populations in the sewers. Smaller animals like Ghor-Ka Bloodscales could have escaped from a zoo. I'd say when and if animals are made playable, a list of unplayable animals must be made based on powergaming and unreasonability. So nobody will be playing Dire Wolves, or Medskalas.

I disagree. Players should not be playing animals, especially beyond those of domesticated animals;
  • It can be abused, or 'bent' even with regulations.
    • There were instances in the past where people would play dangerous animals just to attack people for the kicks.
      • The Giant Spider has venom of which's potency varies by size, as seen when looking into the quote "Depending on the size and strength of their prey, the size, sharpness, and venom adapted itself accordingly as well, though these changes were subtle." Even if a small amount, I feel uncomfortable with people able to run willy nilly and be like 'lol you got bitten have fun'. That's not enjoyable for most, especially when it's some throwaway /animal/, not even a character.
  • It wouldn't expand surface roleplay.
    • Animals don't offer much of a benefit to surface dwellers. Beyond the occasional joke roleplay done when someone poses as a dog or cat, not much can be done, and I don't see anything beneficial beyond 'kill it kill it!' roleplay if we were to allow the playing of creepy crawlies and the like.
And quite frankly, the last point:
  • Why?
    • Animals are not characters. They don't 'develop' and offer brief satisfaction (often at the expense of another).
      • Animals have underwhelming personalities.
      • Animals often end up being trolly roleplay.
      • Animals can barely progress a plot, if at all.
      • With all the time spent roleplaying an animal, you probably could have done something much more meanwhile with another character.

This is coming from my view as a player, not lore staff.

I think the biggest reason people would like to roleplay as an animal, would be along the same line of thought as cutesy roleplay: It's easy
and relaxing. Sometimes people get tired of roleplaying seriously for extended periods of time, and much like some artists will take a break from drawing to draw, some roleplayers will probably take a break from roleplaying to roleplay. Not every story needs to have a purpose, and not every character needs their own plot. It's okay to have fun and do something simple every once in a while.

and uh, that's just a shot in the dark i have no idea if it's right or not

I can concede with that argument. My disapproval remains however when it's done to attack others. From personal experience, I know it's far from enjoyable.

I sometimes RP animals, when I am bored out of my mind, want to have fun, or am helping out with a friend instead of them playing an animal. For example I was Rping @SpinSpinDizzy 's cat, Charand the Cat, and Rping with @WalnutNinja , having just some fun playing around, being an animal is hard, especially if you dont know how to not metagame, as I learned some stuff my character doesn't know, but I luckily know how not to so it can be good or bad. But I agree some animals should remained unplayable.

Roleplaying as animals tends to fall under troll Roleplay. Very few people have correctly done so in the past, and it only brings a jarring experience to those trying to have meaningful interactions IC. You're free to do what you like in private, non-canonical settings like in Survival worlds or in your own private rentregion if you wish to Roleplay as an animal, so long as it does not interfere or disrupt anyone else's Roleplay.

Hey! Thanks for your interest in the Features and Idea section. Unfortunately this is being rejected, as clearly Lore Staff have mentioned to you in the points above.
