I think everyone should be aware that name changing is not a feature in 1.8, Mojang just added something in 1.8 that will make it possible in the future but it will not be in the game for awhile. And as we have seen with the modding API that was planned for 1.5 and it is 1.8, do not expect this feature for a very long time.

False. They added support for it in 1.7.9 (or another sub-update).
This could be enabled at any time. But stated it will be enabled when a fair amount of servers have updated to 1.8.
The modding API was planned for 1.3 but delayed because of HUGE amounts of work it would require, and mojang
