BACKSTORY/PLOTHOOKS
One of the first to not be made Kathar, but to be born as one, Zapathastura (who's 'name' is merely a title), whom once went by names such as Draemoor, Ravana, Churika, and many, many more, was considered little more than a runt in their youth. Sure, they were born a mage, but their status was lacking and their potential wasn't yet realized, Zapathastura didn't have a name, and wasn't outwardly strong in presence amongst their peers. It was only when the infamous Absimillokh the Elder came and witnessed them that they found an 'out' of orphanage life, albeit it wasn't one that they were particularly fond of. They were to be his pupil, Absimillokh their mentor.
They were a mere child when they were afflicted with vampirism (unwillingly, obviously), and while they did age past a certain point, they have never appeared, ordinarily, older than their twenty-fifth year. Using enthrallment, blood-bonds and their requirement for said blood, Absimillokh, an accomplished scholar by his own right within the Divine Cult, essentially forcefully shaped, some would say groomed, Zapathastura into what they eventually became. Believe it or not, Kathar aren't born cruel, it is those who hold power in their society, though, that shape every generation to be just as twisted and corrupted as the last. They were a pawn for many years, used as a lackey among many other children and adults alike in the Elder's cruel machinations. Every minor infraction was a thrashing that shred apart flesh and broke bone. On top of that, they were only fed enough to keep them coherent, always burning with a hunger they weren't allowed to fully sate.
Over time, resentment grew, and a mind warped by hatred was formed from a broken and confused child. Now an adult, Zapathastura had killed many above and below him to ascend to a position within Absimillokh's direct trust, where they'd have direct access to his person. They had already murdered, this wouldn't be different, and the draining of the heartblood of many other vampires had swelled their power past their former mentor's expectations. His back was turned, and so his head was cleaved off. It was really as simple as that. Drinking of their now-dead, geriatric abuser's blood, their power swelled even more. They couldn't rest, and so they took their contemporaries' station, utilizing the magic which they had studied to mimic him for many years. When that fell through? They wandered the lands, seeking more and more power and control and influence to fill the lack of purpose they felt and still feel within their core. Now? Now they're here-and-there, in Regalia.
- Are you a vampire? You might know them! Sure, a dastardly afflicted Kathar lacking a decent moral code isn't uncommon amongst the creatures of the night, but one as profoundly disgusting, cunning and violent as Zapathastura? A rare sight, and one that would put even the eldest of bloodthirsters on edge at that.
- Reports of a shapeshifter? Maybe. While being a Kathar in itself may not be inherently illegal, it brings too much attention (that and every stereotype about their people is essentially completely and wholly true for them), and so Zapathastura often hides their heritage and identity through shape-changing into both people and beasts alike.
- An artist? You might be in contact with a strange patron or client! It's Zapathastura, obviously. One of the few interests they have kept through their few centuries of life, save for gory fleshcraft and its associated magic, is their devotion tot he arts. While they often combine blood and flesh into whatever art they themselves produce, they do have a vested interest for art that... isn't... going to make normal people who look at it vomit.
