Spoiler: Basic Information Expansion Current Situation Xoc hasn't found much of a place where she fits in, but has taken to roaming the sewers, occasionally doing odd jobs for an extra regal or two. Upbringing Xoc was born in Solangeria, to Ixtel and Ah-Kin Iuitl, in a small jungle community in Solangeria. Her family was of average standing in the area, not in great wealth or poverty. She had one older brother, who was killed at seven by a fatal illness before she was born. Her nose is wide and a little short and thicker lips. Xoc's eyes are easily the most prominent feature in her visage, as they are a piercing yellow-green. Her eyes are framed by long lashes, and frequently outlined lightly with dark makeup. Her forehead is medium-sized, with wide and thick brows. Her face is free from freckles and scars, and usually falls into a neutral expression or subtle smirk. Her hair is around chin-length and wavy, with the left half buzzed very short and close to her head. Body Description Xoc is frustratingly short, standing at 5'2, with an mesomorph body type. She has an acrobatic build, with small amounts of muscle buildup. She has a pear-shaped body, and most of her weight sits in her hips, thighs, and calves. Her right hand is particularly noticeable, as it is missing her entire pinky finger and parts of her middle and ring fingers. Skin Description Xoc possesses far fewer tattoos than most of her race, as she was taken into slavery at a young age. However, she does have a few wide bands and simple patterns inked in silver on her upper arms. Clothing and Accessories Xoc has a taste for long, sweeping coats, loose harem pants, and half shirts. She'll often throw in a scarf either around her head, neck, or waist. She prefers to wear warm tones, particularly reds, oranges, and brown. Occasionally, she'll wear some purple or turquoise, but sticks to her main hues for the most part. She wears several rings, one for almost every finger. These range in quality, from a simple bronze band to an intricate golden one with a small lapis lazuli gem that she may have stolen from a noblewoman lacking in observation skills. She also wears golden, or faux replications of gold, jewelry. (Most of this is stolen.) It ranges from day to day, though small hoop earrings are present almost at all times. Voice Description Xoc's voice is smooth and silky, on the slightly deep side of things. She has a talent of projecting her voice far, and often is loudly outspoken. She speaks with a light accent, stressing vowels, particularly the 'a' sound. She has a habit of calling people 'darling' or 'sweetheart' in a condescending way. Her flair for drama extends into her conversations, where she'll oftentimes entirely make up or exaggerate a story just to seem interesting. While this quality can get her into sticky situations, it also can help to make friends and allies. Her statements are nearly always extreme, and she thrives on gaining attention from others. ▹Sassy (+/-) While not seen as a positive by everyone, Xoc considers this to be her greatest strength. She will often twist people's words against them, or simply be incredibly passive-aggressive. She's also not afraid to speak out against her "betters," though it'll often come out entirely unintentionally. Xoc basically displays a fundamental disrespect to anyone who she dislikes, and does not hesitate to use this to her advantage in conversation. ▹Vivacious (+) Xoc is a very animated person, always bursting with lively energy. She gets easily excited over whatever she is currently interested in, though it does shift quite often. Xoc is always keeping conversation alive and interesting with her seemingly endless energy and excitement. She learned to stay on the bright side and put on a front of happiness through her past experiences, as she knows that if she dwells on dark memories for too long, she'll lose her motivation in life. ▹Empathetic (+) Xoc, despite often seeming self-motivated, has an ability to connect with others. Even if she is entirely incapable of relating to someone, she'll often turn to appealing to a person's emotions prior to resorting to violence or fiery outbursts. The ease with which Xoc can understand someone's feelings helps her to gain support, allies, and control through both slight emotional manipulation and simply being a relatable, reliable source of help and shelter. ▹Short-Tempered (-) Xoc has an amazingly low tolerance for anything that is mildly irritating, and once driven over the brink, lashes out vehemently. She's quick to anger or to send off on a tirade, particularly responding negatively to insults. While she can take a joke, her temper will sometimes lead to her reacting too quickly and fly off the handle. ▹Fickle (-) Xoc has a short attention span and trouble with staying put. She has a tendency to move from place to place constantly, and finds it difficult to consistently remain with any group or organization. Xoc has no interest in settling down, and actually hates being confined to Regalia due to monetary issues, and would much prefer to have the freedom to travel around Aloria. Her fickleness makes it tricky to make close, lasting friendships, as she quickly becomes bored with any situation. ※Strengths※ ▹Agile Xoc is naturally built with acrobatics in mind, and while not having brutish strength, she can fight somewhat with evasion and speed. In terms of fighting, she finds it easier to use a quarterstaff, as when she fights with it, it allows her to use acrobatic skill and tail to her advantage. During her childhood in Solangeria, what little she learned often had to do with agility as well. ▹Witty Xoc often jokes, regardless of the situation. Her humor is normally more refined than one would expect of a sewer-dweller who doesn't speak common as a first language. She also doesn't have much of a censor, which oftentimes makes her comedy verge more on throwing shade. When her more offensive comments are thrown around, though, it helps her to gain respect in an odd way, and helps her to ward off more unsavory people. ▹Relatable Xoc takes time to make herself relatable to most people she meets. Though not the smartest Alorian, she can quickly see how others react to certain things and adapt herself to their preferences and emotional state. She'll also deflect questions about herself, rather focusing on the other person, making her seem more likable much of the time. ※Weaknesses※ ▹Untrained For the most part, Xoc entirely refuses to learn any skills formally, be it reading and writing, or any form of combat, as she believes her mimic ability can save her the trouble. She relies heavily on her mimic ability in most cases, and doesn't value learning. After all, why bother with the time it takes to develop something when someone else has already done so? ▹Hotheaded It takes very little to rile up Xoc. Her temper causes her to react without thinking and quickly make poor decisions. She's also reckless and brash, and acts impulsively, rather than logically. In addition, she reacts very, very poorly to insults, as she has a bit of an ego. ▹Right Hand While Xoc was enslaved, she was caught attempting to escape with stolen provisions. As a punishment, the head of the household cut off her entire pinky finger half of her ring finger, and the upper third of her middle finger. leaving her with useless stumps. This event also forced her to become left-handed, as it makes it hard to hold onto or lift items. Her fingers have healed, as there have been several years following her enslavement, but they are still very sensitive and what's left of her ring finger hand is barely movable. Limited use of her hand has rendered her clumsy and makes it incredibly difficult to hold and use a weapon, even if she were to use her mimic ability to gain talent with one. Since she is not naturally left-handed, missing her fingers also makes it impossible to write, though she did, at one point, learn a few letters in Common. ▹Slow to Trust Xoc's time in slavery has left her wary of other people, particularly Qadir. Though she appears outgoing and friendly, she is quick to become defensive when faced with personal questions. How she deflects questions varies heavily in terms of kindness, depending mostly on how comfortable she is in the situation. If she were to be asked about her enslavement or anything else that's a sensitive subject for her, she'll panic and change the subject, though she'll do this more subtly with anything, even an innocent personal query. This aspect of her personality has hindered her in terms of making friends and allies, as it's hard to trust someone when their distrust of you is blatantly obvious, no matter how energetic and friendly said person seems. Spoiler: Personality and Abilities Expansion Quirks -When nervous or uncomfortable, Xoc instinctively wraps her tail around one of her ankles. -Xoc bites her nails when confronted with a large problem. -Xoc blinks more often than usual when lying. -She has a babit of tucking and untucking her hair from behind her ear when confused or uncomfortable. -If she's incredibly focused on something, she'll pull her hair completely out of her face. -If she's trying to hide something, she lets her hair fall in front of her eye. This is most of the time. Talents Xoc's only real natural talent is that she has a very nice singing voice. It's almost entrancing, at the very least almost like a lullaby. This obviously isn't helpful in most situations, but it is an interesting part of her character. Likes -Maps Though Xoc cannot read or fully understand maps, she has a strange liking for them. She particularly likes maps of Regalia, as those she can actually comprehend due to familiarity with the city. She also finds it funny to come across maps containing a largely blank Solangeria. -The Ocean Xoc has had limited experience with the ocean, but has a fascination with it. She really enjoys watching waves in the harbor, and is rather disappointed that she cannot travel on the sea due to the Bone Horror crisis. -Magic Magic has always baffled and entranced Xoc. She finds, in particular, elemental magic to be the most interesting, as it is the most easily understandable. She's never considered it as a thing she could learn, but enjoys others' performing of it. Dislikes -Cold Xoc hates the cold fiercely. During the winter, she'll wear so many layers outside that it's comical. Snow is her greatest enemy. She just really, really despises the feeling. -Bland Food Xoc enjoys spiced food and often is dissatisfied with the fare she can afford. ※ Life Story ※ ※CHILDHOOD※ Xoc was born in a small Xbanql in the jungles of Solangeria to Ixtel and Ah-Kun Iuitl. She was the second-born child in her family, though never knew her older brother due to his young death from illness before her birth. Because of her brother’s death, her parents were extremely protective of Xoc. She lived a sheltered life, never seeing far beyond the outermost homes. She became restless with her situation, never being able to move beyond the settlement. She once became so frustrated that she left the borders and went out into the wild. She quickly was injured by predatory animals, not having any skills needed to survive in the harsh wilderness. It only took her around an hour to get horribly lost, and it was sunset before she made it back home. When she arrived, though, she found the huts in half-scorched ruin, with dying tribe-mates littering the ground. She heard clattering chains for a moment, but before she could realize their meanings, she felt cold metal shackles slapped on her wrists. ※SLAVERY※ Xoc was purchased by a wealthy family in a port town in Farah’deen after a long journey over the seas. Immediately, she learned that she was no longer free to do as she pleased, and if she attempted to, would feel a whip at her back. The first months were hell, as she was trapped in an unfamiliar place with strange people speaking an alien language. Her owners had her work in the fields of the small farm on which the house sat upon, harvesting for long, boiling hot days with the small group of other slaves. After a year, when she had picked up on some Qadiric, and certainly knew the laws of being a slave, she began work in the house, keeping it clean. This was a welcome relief from the hard, sweltering work outdoors, but she still despised every minute of captivity. In the ten years she was owned in Farah'deen, she attempted escape three times. The first time, when she was fifteen, she teamed up with an older slave who had almost made it out three times before. They stole food, a miniscule amount of money, gathered what few belongings they had, and ran for the town. Before they even made it ten steps out of the property, they were caught. Xoc never saw the other slave again, and as punishment for her actions, she lost her fingers. She was not working in the house anymore, and was immediately sent out into the fields again, under high scrutiny. The second time, fueled by her past experiences, she managed to twist the blame onto the second person she tried to escape with, and got off easy. She somehow managed to regain the trust of the family in the following years, all the while planning her final escape. At twenty-three, Xoc snuck into the house in the dead of night, took whatever food and money she could carry in a small bag, and crept out, into the wilderness. She was not stopped, as she knew that if she were to be, she would be killed this time. ※REGALIA※ Xoc managed to buy passage on a ship bound for Regalia. After arriving in the city, she was overwhelmed with the massive buildings and crowded, winding streets. After realizing that the prejudice towards her race spread to this city as well, she retreated from the surface and spent more and more time in the sewers. Enslavement has left her slow to trust, even to this day, despite her outgoing appearance. Since her arrival, she's been looking for somewhere to fit in, and hoping that she won't be living along in the sewers for the rest of her life.
Sorry for the delay, @Aspen__ , I'm sure you know how busy holiday time gets. Without further ado, here's the review! It's a really well-written application, so there shouldn't be many problems. Please add a physical weakness to balance out your character's combat ability. Since this is a combat-based character, at least from my perspective of her, give her a physical weakness like for example a badly healed joint, a missing finger, or susceptibility to concussions or something like that. I see a bit of a contradiction in the 'Passionate' and 'Fickle' traits, because one seems to say she's very passionate about her interests, while the other says she flip-flops a lot. Please either elucidate/reword these traits to avoid this contradiction, or replace a trait. Just make sure they don't overlap. When writing weaknesses, remember to say how they got the weakness and how it affects them today. The trait I'm focused on here is 'Impatient', as there's very little expanding on it and I'd like you to add how it affects her or her surroundings in a bit more detail. Perhaps link it back to hotheaded or another weakness, or event in her past. Lastly, your character has been a slave, and realistically this would affect her quite a bit; her personality, her weaknesses, her opinions and biases. Did it affect her at all? Maybe go into a little detail in the life story or otherwise about what her enslavement resulted in. It's a little bonus option but it'd be very nice to know, especially since it's a traumatic event. The best apps are always written cross-referencing weaknesses, strengths and traits throughout the whole app, and tying them up and justifying them in the life story. It's an optional point but I really recommend it. Make these changes and highlight them in a colour of your choice! Once they're made, make sure to @tag me and I'll review your changes. I think I've made all of the changes! @Chiruda ~Replaced 'Impatient' weakness with 'Right Hand' and 'Slow to Trust' ~Replaced 'Passionate' trait with 'Vivacious' ~Rewrote life story sections 'Slavery' and 'Regalia' in order to have a more lasting impact on Xoc as well as made her slavery far more of a traumatizing time in her life. ~Removed all mention of quarterstaff fighting, as it was unnecessary and made her unbalanced. Really good edits, actually! I like this a lot and I genuinely think your character is really cool. One last edit I would like you to make is expand on how the missing fingers would affect her in roleplay, besides her having to use her left hand. I imagine she would be clumsy? Maybe she'd be almost illiterate because she can't write? Maybe when she picks up something with her right hand, you roll to see if she she drops it? (I've seen that last one several times and it works in roleplay, because it's a recurring weakness you actually play out.) Please just add a sentence on this and you're good to go, @Aspen__ !
