Wintered Return

The young woman carried the two year old boy on her shoulders, singing a nursery rhyme off-tune as she went; despite it though, the darkly tanned toddler was all smiles as he held to his mother's hands, stayed balanced as he sat at her neck. He leaned his head down, pressing his cheek against his mother's matching dark hair.

"Mama," he said finally, yawning. The eighteen year old hummed lightly, rubbing her thumbs over her son's small hands. "Mama, tired."

Daria turned her head slightly to glance at the boy before raising her arm behind him and pulling him off her shoulders to instead hold him snuggly against her chest, his chin resting on her shoulder. "Darling," she murmured, her hands rubbing his back briefly. "Let's take you back to Miss Elizabeth."

Though the streets the woman continued, talking a turn down a flight of stairs and moving into the building- the Almshouse. "Lady Elizabeth!" She called until finally the young woman, older than herself, appeared and smiled towards the young boy in Daria's arms. The two exchanged a quick word before the noblelady took the mutt baby and the New Regalian eighteen year old headed back out into the Winter.

Her steps lead her through the cold city, the woman focused only on keeping her coat wrapped around her as she glanced over the dull landscape. She continued past the Golden Willow and instead settled in the park. She sat down onto the swing and fumbled with pulling a sigg and box of matches from her pocket. The Ailorian girl lit the sigg and pulled it to her lips, glancing out onto the frozen brook as she breathed out the smoke.

As her gaze rose to see the pathway across the ice, she herself seemed to freeze. A strange, yet familiar man stood across from her, not noticing the smoking woman on the swing. She stood from the swing, stepping forward to peer over the bushes at the man when suddenly he continued on his trip through the park, vanishing behind the vegetation of the park.

She shook her head quickly and dropped her sigg into the snow, rushing away before the hissing of the snow melting the burnt tabacco even ended. Daria struggled to run in her boots, feet kicking up as she tried to catch another glance at the man, who was now stepping out into the main path in front of the park's bridge. He paused again- perhaps looking for something- and somehow didn't notice the slight woman standing up on the bridge besides him.

The cold air formed a cloud as she breathed, staring at the man with wide eyes before a smile appeared on her face, opening her mouth to speak- but it was too late. He had started off already and despite the fact she told herself to follow, something told her that moment was not it. She touched her chin a moment, brushing her fingers against the scar across it before saying aloud to herself in a bewildered yet joyful voice, "He's back. Abe is finally back."

She blinked a few times, pulling herself together as she held her hand over her bright smile as if to make herself look less foolish. Yet, whoever passed couldn't be fooled- she was clearly overjoyed; but who wouldn't be?

Her son's father had finally returned to Regalia.
