Why Do People Not Use Shields?

They block arrows completely, and mitigate a lot of damage in general from melee.

You can shift-rightclick while using a shield to activate your McMMO ability btw Also there are texture packs which lower the visual of the shield, so it doesn't block as much of your view.

They're just more to think about, and break your sprint when you pot with a potion in your other hand.

personally I have a bow in the offhand in combat situations (which basically is darkrooming, but I digress)

I see people get hit by arrows, while carrying an axe in one hand --- seems like the shield would be a big benefit, just wondering
