Alak'aer groaned as he sank into the soft cushions of a couch in the Heiwynn Apothecary, sunbeams throwing their dazzling shadows across the room. He rested for a second, meditating, silently thanking Estel that he was alive. After a moment, he reached up and touched his face, feeling for the second gash he had received in a week. Silently, he went to the counter and stepped behind it, wearily taking a cup of water and setting it to boil. He then gathered Ruby Flower and some Opium and laid it out to make a medicine.
Once the water was done, and the drink made, he sat back down and contemplated what to do next. The sewer, he knew, was perpetually on the brink of rioting and chaos. Sometimes, it was all he could do to keep his own sanity down there… but he knew someone had to help. Someone had to wander the dark hallways in search of victims. Someone had to gather the sick, poor children and usher them back into the sunlight. Someone had to be the guide.
He hated it.
He hated being alone in the dark, his only company the cries of the anguished. He hated having to see the broken faces of the people, and the twisted faces of the heretical. He needed a break, a rest, a home…
That's why he joined the Nenyarina. For a home. For a family. For a chance… a chance at normalcy.
"Normalcy" seemed to be a never-ending stream of curses directed at you by an angry sewer-dweller almost daily. Which he was fine with, really, he just… wanted there to be peace. For even just a moment.
Sighing, he got up once more, his drink finished, and stretched. Placing the cup back onto the counter, he grabbed his stave and walked downstairs, to the entrance. After all these years, he still had a limp from that idiot dwarf.
Stepping out into the sunlight, he remembered something. Something he hardly wanted to admit to himself… something that was exciting, strange, and almost terrifying… in a wonderful way.
Walking down the street towards the western wall, he thought of his best friend.
Crawling through the small hole that allowed him into the countryside, he smiled as he thought of her.
Stepping once more into the dark and dripping sewers, he laughed softly as he remembered her smiling face, her endless energy, her infinite kindness...
Stopping, cold with dread, already shot through with a thrill of terror, as he saw the slumped and bloody body of Ra'ilia Yinvy, his best friend, his crush, his light to the world… crying out as he ran towards her, seeing her bent and twisted ankle… shaking with worry and fear as he knelt next to her broken form…
"Rai?"
She breathed in, breathed out.
"A-alak. Run."
Dun dun dun… I'll post the rest of it later!
