Technology in Aloria never truly stood still, and with a world increasingly threatened by magical beings and powers that the common man could not conceive of, Regalia answered with what Regalia answers best. Explosions and Black powder. For years, Regalian engineers worked to perfect the cannon and Black powder to increase both loading times, limit the damage inflicted to one's own army and to maximize the range of cannons. For many decades, Regalia relied on the cumbersome ring-cannon, an inefficient piece of field artillery used to blast fortifications apart, though due to the arc of fire, it proved entirely ineffective against infantry. In early 304 AC, an engineer by the name of Harald Krupplenstein and his pupils developed a new cannon type now commonly referred to as the Déculvert, a more reliable and more advanced piece of field artillery. Old Regalian weapons had always been stationary, prone to exploding Black powder inside the barrel and cumbersome. These new cannons could be rolled around on wheels, had a more effective and safe firing mechanism, and above all, could be produced much faster than the old ring-cannons. Ammo types also became more advanced, leading to the development of ring shots, shrapnel shots and the all prized lapis-bore, a cannonball that would disperse a large cloud of fine lapis dust to disable mages. Regalia armed itself with new weapons to guard against the ever increasing power of the magical unknown, with the strange fog creatures fresh in memory and vague new discoveries in far distant lands with wild Magics that could one day threaten to overthrow the emperor.

Not only cannons made their advances, Dwarves made good use of new technological exchange and dug deeper than ever before with Regalian Black Powder. In various Dwarven settlements in southern Ellador, deep tundra mining has revealed strange springs producing gasses. These gasses were originally found to be highly toxic, but when captured inside a balloon, provided intense buoyancy, even more so than heated air. Dwarves immediately started experimenting with balloons and found the gas had various advantages over conventional airships powered by super heated air. The gas was nonflammable, meaning ships were effectively safe from fire arrows. Additionally the gas was much more intensely buoyant, and required no constant heating to remain in the air. It took several months to create various ways to force ships back to the ground, but eventually when the Dwarves developed a hook-reel system that could safely pull airships down, followed by Regalia showing interest in purchasing large quantities of the new developments. With Regalia now pouring piles of gold onto the Dwarves for their gas and technology, Regalia's arsenal was expanded with more reliable, faster and larger airships able to carry more materials and personnel. The entire face of the way the Regalian Empire was to fight wars in the future was to change forever, but change was not only confined to the Army itself.

The Imperial seat was in relative turmoil due to the government instability of the past years, and the increased power of the nobility started infringing ever more on the royal prerogative. In order to preserve the religious stature of the Imperial seat, the Emperor agreed with the Sanchella of Union to create a separate sovereign body to rule all of the Regalian sub-states, including the Empire, separately. This new sovreign body was still confined to the Imperial Crown Isle, but encompassed only the Imperial district and the Imperial Palace, maintaining its own strict direct control by the Emperor. By separating the emperor from the Regalian Empire itself, the Empire changed from an Absolute Monarchy to an Oligarchic State overnight, with the Emperor federally declaring his spiritual and foreign guidance to all states equally. All states within the Regalian commonwealth became formally part of the Regalian Empire, though were all treated as federal states of the Emperor, even the Archipelago itself. The Empire was becoming so large and populated that direct control of the Archipelago and treating all other lands like colonies was no longer feasible, as seen by the populist riots in Daendroc and the various Archipelago lands. In some cases even the rural lands of Anglia and Calemberg as a whole almost had as much inhabitants as the Imperial capital itself.

OOC Summary of Lore happenings:
  • The Emperor and The "Church of Union" seceded from Regalia to form a sort of "Papal State" which functions as a doming government over all federal Regalian states as federal government.
  • Duchies and Counties in many cases are treated as their own countries. The various lands in the Regalian Archipelago have become so intensely populated that the central government can no longer control them all, resulting in semi-autonomy for local rulers.
  • Lighter-than-air gas has been developed by Dwarves called Loftoren Gas. This results in making airships more reliable and larger, though still only affordable to richer characters.
  • Older ring-cannons are replaced by more reliable Déculverts, heralding the frequent use of field artillery in mixture with infantry tactics for the Regalian army. These cannons are for now, patented to the Regalian army, but various local foundries can make a few for rulers of semi-autonomous lands.
What this really means for the states in the Regalian Collective (still being referred to as Empire) pay only nominal taxes to the Emperor's "Imperial Seat" and rely on the Emperor to determine the future of all nations, but have effective local autonomy. All information above is fully known IC to everyone now.

I can already see what's going to happen with this new lore. [mon]

Not to be the guy who says "Whet about firarmz in roleplays?", but what about pirates, sailors, and treasure hunters with ships? Would they have access to these new cannons in like player quests and stuff? Could they obtain them in a world progression or player quest, or if they had some sort of rich benefactor?
