After reading quite a bit of lore on the levels of magic, types of magic, requirements of magic, etc. I found myself increasingly interested in creating a magic-using character. I am a Chi'en-Ji, so I already have some cultural background in magic, but that's mainly stuff like meditation and theories of magic. I wanted to learn magic, and knowing that the only plausible, balanced rp way for that to happen was to learn it from someone else, I took a trip to the forums and the server to look for a magic user. Unfortunately, I have not found a single magic user. It seems that nobody practices magic anymore, or if they do it's in secret, away from Regalia. Even the more common and easily-condoned ones such as Light Magic are nonexistent when looked at with scrutiny. Is there some secret magic cult that I'm missing out on? Or is magic just no longer a possibility because nobody will train you anymore?

I understand that the learning of magic should be limited, so that not everyone is a magic user, but as an earnest seeker with a balanced plan for magic learning I feel that there must be some way to find magic. Any suggestions?

There are a couple of magic cults that exist yeah, but I think you might be looking at the lore wrong. It's not a clear cut "magic exists", rather the lore implies that there is something fantastic and mystical about magic, rather because its lack of existence or prevalence. If everyone and their grandmother was a mage, magic wouldn't be special and mystical anymore. We've set up the lore to keep in mind that magic is something that simply exists in the background and makes some jumps forward every now and then, but the majority of the story lines are about people and their actions.

Then is it unrealistic for my character to learn magic? I guess I really should have put more time and effort into making a unique and original roleplay storyline rather than just finding a place to learn magic...

Also, is it possible to be at the rank of Trainee by yourself? At what level do interactions with masters come into play?

It is realistic for them to learn any kind of magic, it's just a bit hard to do it without metagaming. Usually it involves contacting someone with a magical character and then working out some sort of plotline that would bring those two characters together. There are some mages which are publicly known to be mages, though not all of them are equally nice people, and in theory they would break state law by teaching a non magical individual magic. New Regalia will feature an underground Magic club/school/cult thing, but for now mages are decentralized and hard to find.

You are able to dictate any level of magic into your character. If you are going to make a character application: then simply let it make sense. If not: nobody is going to bat an eye if you roleplay without a character application, as long as it's not too overpowered or out of bounds.

Hey if you wanna learn Hex just check out my signature, I have a female Hex mage that might be willing to teach stuff, but she's fairly limited in that she only really knows Charm, and isn't a master.

Making my app right now, he's going to be a light mage. I was under the impression that the character had to learn magic in-game, but now I understand that magic can be written into their backstory. Thanks for the offer, would totally take you up on that if I wasn't a celestial mage. My friend Wolfbat9 might like that though, you should contact him...

Stone magic is always a viable option... It's very practical and a dying art. so learning it could be very useful.
