Named after the Höglander Griffin, The Griffin Guard or the 'Gripvakt' is an organized guard force tasked with protecting members of House Fristadvlom.
With the recent rise of the family to nobility, this group is now being revived, since its dissolution. It is to be expected that members of the guard pledge their loyalty and lives to preserve and protect the family, their belongings, and pride.
The story of the Gripvakt is linked to the history of House Fristadvlom proceeding after its birth. Carin, founder of House Fristadvlom, had long passed at the time and the fifth generation of the family emerged.
Markus Akeson av Fristadvlom was born to a family in the midst of turmoil as unsettling wars erupted around Rikeland with the death of the Revain. Höglanders, fierce as ever, sought to usurp and absorb the lands of those around them. In this era, House Fristadvlom did not covet as much as their compatriots, but instead aimed for an existence content with the lands they owned. Stories say that they owned lands beyond the town of Askanorr, the whole Griprede Mountains, instead of a portion of it, as well as the Elfenbensvit or the Ivory Forest.
Either way, at the time, House Fristadvlom was considered one of the contesting lords of the region, especially after the death of the one Revain of Rikeland. The survival of the house relied heavily on the fact it did not try to insight battles with the other lords, but this would not work for long. Even since the start of the fourth generation, the steady decline of Fristadvlom lands began. Two-thirds of the Elfenbensvit was taken by another family, one that ties into the lineage of the current Duke of Kerwolf. This family proceeded further into Fristadvlom territory, taking a whole half of the Griprede Mountains. The family had grown complacent, believing falsely that the lord, who kept encroaching on their lands would stop soon. They would find themselves wronged.
In these years of decline, Markus struggled to rip his lands away from wars and fierce enemies throughout his life. While having the aid of his predecessors, this would be short-lived as some of his family became 'collateral' damage to some of the enemy families. Without much of a grasp for assassinations, Markus created a strong organization of fierce soldiers to combat the enemy, surrounding himself with reliable partners.
Once the force was officially established, it would be christened with the name 'Gripvakt' or 'Griffin Guard' after a creature renowned for its ties to pride and destiny. In the coming battles and conflicts, namely the locally-known 'Battles of the Ivory Lands', Markus would lead his troops, at times, even letting his sons, Caj and Dagr, participate or lead. They employed various tactics to their advantage, such as using knowledge of the Elfenbensvit and training their cavalry to navigate through the winding forest to rout their enemies efficiently. As the men were survivalists from the training, many easily took camp in the forests for months on end, taking down scouts or small groups attempting to collect information. When the enemy family blindly sent in troops, the cavalry thundered in and gave little to no chance to their adversaries defend themselves. Eventually, this tired out the enemy forces and they retreated. Of course, proceeding this, others would still make attempts on Fristadvlom lands, but for decades after, the lands and people were protected. Because of their reliability, the Griffin Guard also gained the honor and responsibility to protect generations of Fristadvloms.
However, even as Markus and his son, Dagr ,would maintain the strength of the Griffin Guard and several others would as well, soon enough, the family would submit themselves to Kerwolf's rule, having grown weak from decades of warfare and bouts of mismanagement. As part of them becoming subjects, the Griffin Guard was forcibly disbanded in 243 AC.
In 307 AC, with the ascension of House Fristadvlom into nobility, the Gripvakt has been reinstated by the decree of Grand Baroness Novellia Fristadvlom.
