Alright, so basically Im posting from a limited experience on Massivecraft.

When I first started, quite some time ago, I maxed out my swords skill.

However, on further reviewing the two skills (Axes and Swords) It seems like I wasted a lot of time going the route of swords.

Why do I say that?

Heres why:

Lets compare the two... axes have the ability to scale with ON HIT damage, which means that every hit from a more skilled axe user will deal more damage. I dont know what the max "+DMG" amount is, but Im assuming thats not taking Sharpness and Strength into consideration. That in and of itself puts the base damage output of axes much higher than that of swords. This is also not taking into account Skull Splitter or the critical strikes that accommodate axes.

Most people Ive asked seem to say that the bleeding effect from swords is what allows the damage outputs to be closer to equal. Yet I dont find this to be true....

The bleeding effects are easily countered, if not completely negated, by health regeneration traits, potions, and absorption traits.

Basically, since it is a damage over time effect, if the regeneration rate is greater than the damage it may aswell not even apply. The only use I can really see of it is the fact that the damage ticks interrupt running.

But from my experience, this doesnt seem to matter when youre going up against a high level axe user. His hits deal more base damage, so any trades you make with him in combat are bound to be negative for you. (save for some random counter attack spree, but even that isnt too great)

I mean, Im not against counterplay (ie overcharging your regen rate/hp pool to counter the bleeding) but it seems like its not just counterable.... its worthless.... How is it useful when a mastered axe wielder can dish out so much more damage on hit?

Im not experienced with mcmmo, I just grinded when I originally played. So if anyone has more experience or input to add, or wants correct anything Ive said, feel free.

TLDR: I dont see how swords are remotely viable when axes seem to deal so much more damage.

This is precisely why I cower in fear beyond the walls of my faction... Or shoot others from a distance :'3 Idk, I have swords rather than axes, but again, I'm a very sub-par PVP'er ;) Axes are hella strong. :o

I totally disagree with this seeing as most people run axe resistant and all I have to do is block and just regen my health. You will be doing way less damage and I have will have my basic bleed serrated strikes and you will be on fire.... I am waiting for all the disagrees ahahah

I actually do used actually use swords sometimes and so do several other pvpers. Yes axe damage can be higher but the fire, standard lack of sword resistanceand bleed can make up for it. Also, unlike a lot of people I prefer knockback on my swords as I find that canbe useful to pin people in place as well.

Again though, I dont see how that matters when fire and bleed are DoT sources of damage. Several things ruin it.

If someone has an absorption trait, it will act as a shield. Even if you manage to get the absorption down, it will probably refresh (and this absorb even more of the damage) before any real harm can be done. This is notably because if they have any sort of regeneration effects, or in some cases just a full hunger bar, they can simply regenerate the health that they lost under the absorption shield.

About the lack of sword resistant trait usage, I was also told that. I still dont know (I havent done the math) that itd do the same amount of damage as an axe swing.

A diamond sword with Sharpness V, according to the damage tables Ive reviewed, deals 14.25 since the base damage of a diamond sword is 8, and each level of sharpness adds 1.25 damage. (note this is damage, not hearts and does not take into account armor and such)

^ the numerical values used for damage here are the ones taken off of the Minecraft wiki. Which has never failed me before.

Now, I know that sword damage remains at that output. Axes scale though.

They have the ability to deal more base damage on each hit as you level, and the ability to critically strike for more damage.

Even with the reduction of damage, (since most people run axe resistant) Im almost certain that an axe with Sharpness V in the hands of someone with a high axe skill will still deal more damage than using a sword on someone without the sword resistant trait. (This is also not counting Strength. Which could completely change this, depending on how the axes critical strike works. If it applies AFTER the initial strength boost to damage, thatd be insane damage output)

I may do the math in a bit, I just need to find the specific values to plug in.

Swords became viable again after traits were added. I know alot of pvp'ers that uses swords and i even fought alot of them today. GF @jquaile :P

I use axes because of the damage, but I plan to (eventually) work on my swords again, since I have a uberpowerful godsword I never use xD

Honestly, it's really not necessaryto train mcmmo, as Bryce said. My first legit PvP kill (God armor, god axe, etc.) was when I had around 400 axes, and my opponent had around 900. Is it helpful and a good idea to train mcmmo? Yes, of course. However it is not required. I know several PvPers who are extremelyeffective PvPers, @Niften in particularwho still hasn't finished his mcmmo, and uses swords. Another example is dragonixsparton who has gotten a few high profile kills, and has a very low axes level.

Im not saying that they arent entirely viable.

Im just saying in a flat equal fight with an axe user and a sword user of equal skill caps, that the axe user has the potential to deal much more damage. (Or so it would seem to me)

Basically, since close combat in minecraft is about dealing damage while taking as little in return as possible, it seems like the axes have a huge advantage over swords.
