The way I see it.

Respect, and hatred, are both earned.

Some people can start out more to one side, for instance parents starting more heavily respected, and likewise someone for instance on the opposite side on a war would start out with much more hatred.

It can be hard to change stances, i.e. Earn the other. But your parents could earn your hatred. And your enemy could earn your respect.
