    Personality and Abilities

The following is required when filling out your character application. In order to explain the character’s personality, we will ask you write a paragraph to respond to each question, and we’ll provide some examples to give you some ideas. If you want to be helpful to reviewers, make sure to bold the keywords you are using that are traditionally seen as traits:

    • First Paragraph: Although he’s past his 20’s, Saúl is often seen as a kid. Others would look down upon his childish clumsiness and excitement and see him as an innocent boy who has yet to experience the world’s cruelty. However, he’d appear more nervous in towns further from home, leading to his clumsiness around people. For his efforts of showing politeness towards any coming his way, after one meets him they’d most likely at the very least appreciate the little kind gestures Saúl strongly attempts to show, believing the kid might have just never done a single wrong thing in his life. Strangers differ in Saúl’s eyes. There are girls who he’s overly nervous around since he never had the time to think about them. There are also the crooks and criminals he resents and avoids, perhaps even a little scared. There are the glorified grown men he aspires to become and looks up to. Yet overall, when he’s face to face with a stranger, he feels obliged to show the common respect.

    • Second Paragraph: He’s confident in his work at home, yet is always afraid he wouldn’t be enough for them outside the fields. Saúl feels most safe in his home and indeed feels like a valuable family member, despite having only half the ties. He sees himself as a devoted worker and is willing to work hard to reach his goals, the ones he’s certain in. At times Saúl would feel insecure since he didn’t achieve as much as others did his age. He’s fond of the set of morals he was educated with but notes the lack of skill he has in comparison to others.

    • Third Paragraph: Saúl holds his family above all, striving to do anything he possibly could to serve and support his relatives and whatever they hold dear, be it the family business or their own needs. Most of his friends are in fact his family since most (if not all) of his time he’d be working at home, which would also mean he never exactly had a love interest or a relationship. Saúl is a lot more careful around his loved ones and is a whole lot more eager to please them. Unlike strangers, his family, of course, knows better and knows to see him as the workaholic he truly is, and they appreciate every bit of his work in the fields. Since his home is his most safe place, he feels safe enough to be the goofy, silly, and even a bit weird kid he is, climbing whatever he can climb and making everyday tasks adventures in his mind.

    • Fourth Paragraph: His morals mostly come from his work, therefore Saúl strongly believes in teamwork and synergizing with others’ differences. He’d always attempt to reach win-win situations when he’s seeking out valuable means of support from others, so he may also be of use for the ones he also needs. Upon hearing of a corrupt individual, Saúl would avoid and maybe even fear them, only approaching if he truly is desperate for something. He sees himself as good, striving to be better with every move, and he would not risk compromising his image by associating with any corrupt beings.

    • Quick to act: While he might plan his following step or two, he never fully grasps the bigger image or thinks into the far future and the consequences, since he never had to really.

    • Naive: He’s very fond of people, while he might seem nervous around them, but Saúl would gladly trust each person he meets had the world only contained good ones.

    Life Story

Born 11 years in Lusits after his older brother, Saúl’s first image of the world was blurred. He saw white and red looking down upon him and reached for it. His mother was not a member of the da Cana family, in fact, she never stayed long enough to become one. His father, after his previous woman left the family, intermingled with a redhead from the south, who hadn’t bothered with staying longer than a month or so.

It wasn’t long before Saúl found himself standing among men alone, struggling to achieve his father’s attention as it was all given to the gifted older brother of his. So he did what he thought would bring him praise, he turned to work. Already at a very young age, Saúl watched and learned throughout the entire processes of farming, preparing, pressing, boiling, cooking, cutting, setting, and maintaining of sugar canes so he could do just those and please his father. Since he never felt as smart or witty as his siblings, Saúl figured his place would be where everyone was too smart to go, deep into the physical works of the sugar production. He learned to climb and leap from the rush of getting things done around the fields, he learned manners and teamwork from farming with others, he even learned to sing since he needed something to keep his morals while he works.

For years Saúl fought to impress his father, who sadly had other things in mind. His father wanted the older sibling to excel with all of his potential, and only grew more bitter each time his brother failed. Saúl in fact never experienced the same strictness and discipline his brother did, which lead to him to assume his father didn’t believe in him as much as he did in his brother. At times he even feared his father, since the anger his brother caused him was let out upon each member of the house in a certain way, and it only had gotten worse once the gifted son returned home with shame and failure to offer.

The situation had only worsened, and as Saúl grew he found himself drifting more and more to the farmhouses, the fields, the places he truly felt safe and wanted. By his teen years, he’d hardly show to the family meetings/meals, the only thing that interested him was work so that maybe, just maybe, he’d be recognized for by his father one day. This limited his relation with his older brother as well, yet it was never really free. Saúl felt unworthy, unwanted, his own mother didn’t want to stay for him so why would they? The only things that welcomed him were the crops and tools, even the kitchen. With all his spare time he picked up baking goods using the sugar he works so hard for each and every single day. While he would hardly show his face in the house, he’d still left them the things he baked, laying on the dining table for any to grab, never knowing whether they liked them or not.

Eventually, his father grew fatally ill, and his older brother was nowhere to be seen. Saúl hesitated to approach the bedside each time he passed, merely glimpsing past at his father. Even on the brink of death his father hardly paid any attention. When the time had come, and all were praying at his bedside, Saúl caught a mere glimpse of a smile on his father’s face when he turned to him, incapable of deciphering what that little grin meant. Was it pride or the fever? Perhaps his curls caused his father to mistaken him for his brother, he could never know.

There wasn’t much to be said once his brother returned to take over the plantations, there wasn’t a grand welcome and there was no recovery. He had changed, and so did Saúl’s behavior towards him. Once spoken to he’d reply as a worker and not a brother, he had no clue anymore how he was seen so he acted according to what he was, a farmer. He stuck to the plantations and reported progress, unsure whether his brother even remembers who Saúl was. Once again did his brother leave, and news of the da Cana merchant in the grandiose Regalia spread around in the halls like a rabid dog chasing a squirrel, which worried Saúl sick. He refused to admit it though, attempting to maintain his dignity in spite, but deep inside he couldn’t shake off the dangers his brother might face in the future. Regardless of how much more attention his brother got, regardless of the cold and aggression he brought upon himself and his father, regardless of all the times he left their home, Saúl never let go of him as a brother.

    Review:
    • Daendroque was added as a known language for his linguistic skill, but has none in his proficiency.
    • Your backstory is good, and I like the story, however his age is left out quite a bit and there is no mention of where he is born.
    • Not a major issue, nor one really considered important, but your clothing description only says “simple style description”.

You are well on your way, however there is still an issue with the languages.

Your character is 21, and it takes 10 years for a character to learn a language without any linguistic knowledge, so Saul would currently be capped at two languages. This issue can be resolved quite simply; Daendroque-Parcal isn't a language, so only use Daendroque. Once this is done, I'll approve your application.
