Personality and Abilities

✧ Outward Perception || Typical Altalar || Outwardly, Rhoen can come across as awkward or even rude, given the circumstance - the Altalar’s vanity not unfamiliar for his people’s general personality. Thought oft times cautious or unsure of activities or undertaking that he’s not immediately ‘familiar’ with, Rhoen is by no means a coward (though he does take the coward’s route when it best suits him). At his best and most understanding, however, Rhoen is capable of emotive and honest reactions. He favors a more detached approach, with an oft-spotted curl to his lips upon dealing with those first seen, and often comes off as self-obsessed, valuing his own beauty and youthfulness highly-- prizing them further, of course, what with being the youngest of his family.

✧ Inward Perception || Magician’s Mimicry || In truth, Rhoen is internally a naive man guided by his heart and feelings rather than logic. He cloaks this under a smokescreen in an attempt to seem more like his elder brother, who he idolizes. Envious of the arcane connection the majority of his family shares, Rhoen penalizes himself with a certain shade of self-loathing -- aiming to compensate for his perceived faults with a near completion of magician's works and a mastery of alchemy. He finds himself completely overtaken with envy when confronted with Silven and mages, and this colors his interactions with them even though he does his best to push this down. Commonly, he exudes discomfort and a healthy bit of fear in contact with Silven and mages, wary of what they might do. No stranger to the stories of Silven, he instead sees his siblings as exceptions to the rule and battles envy and suspicion of the others. With the Silven and mages in his family, however, he experiences a bitterness at the heart of his love; he's angry, moreso at himself for not being 'good enough' to receive the gifts that they had, and envious of them for enjoying such. He craves the arcane power in their veins that is exemplified in their eyes, and is embittered by the fact that he wields neither, despite their blood being his. His less-than mentality in fact leads to an odd belief that the love he holds for his family is one of the only things that makes him 'whole', being otherwise broken.

✧ Familial Perception || Heart of Gold || With friends and family, Rhoen finds himself softened considerably. He’s eager to please, so much so that he often lacks a spine and will go along with whatever, so long as he himself or his morals are not compromised. He cares a great deal, but usually covers this; however, in the absence of pretense and with those close, he relaxes and allows them to see how much he cares and how excited he is for the subjects he’s passionate about. Towards lovers, he is protective and honest, feeling like lies- even lies of omission- can bring the whole tumbling down, unless necessary to protect them. However, Rhoen finds himself fleetingly careful: his people are so long-lived, and he's not sure he'd like to settle just yet, with a flighty disposition towards love and a tendency to run instead of confront.

✧ Moral Perception || Self Preservation || Rhoen’s morality lies in a grey space. He serves himself first, because while he does judge himself to be lesser than certain others (his siblings, for example), he also values his own life and experiences highly. With the exception of these few people and their interests/needs, he’ll do whatever he can to make himself take breath a moment more or live a day longer, though a large amount of anything he values can tempt him highly. Oddly, he holds others to a wobbly moral standard, much moreso than he holds himself. Cognizant that his own morality is 'see another day', he excuses such actions in others, until they come back to affect him in particular. Rhoen sees the desire to harm, hurt, or murder immoral in almost all cases- he'd only ever excuse it in the case of himself or his loved ones moving in self-defense.​

Life Story

• Rhoen is born in the summer of 235 AC as the youngest brother to Aeralon, Severine, and Alicientella Rhylovhas, and, oddly, a year after his nephew, Orym. Rhoen is born with blue-green eyes- the only mundane among his three Silven siblings. Aeralon and Severine are already a half-century older than Rhoen; Alicientella, meanwhile, is only three years older. Aeralon visits often, and Rhoen bonds closely with him as a big-brother figure, valuing his guidance and wisdom highly- almost more than his parents', to their hidden frustrations. After all, Aeralon is out there, experiencing the world at hand, while his parents remain at home, running the family and nurturing Rhoen and his sister. Severine is rather absent, removing herself entirely save visits only once every twenty or twenty-five years, so her role in Rhoen's life takes a more mythic tone: in her absence from his life, Rhoen fills in the blanks himself, praising her highly and taking pride in her action though also skeptical of her love for him. Alicientella is closer to his age and therefore he spends a good piece of his time with her, and while they share an almost idol-worship for their brother, he has a deep love for his sister, secretly his favorite sibling.
• His family is middle class in Altalar society, brokering information and knowledge for material gaining and wealth. There’s a strong emphasis on scholarship when he is growing up, and his efforts in these areas are encouraged, if not expected, and well rewarded.
• Being the youngest child, Rhoen received comparatively more care from his parents in particular than his other siblings did. He is babied, for lack of a better term, and told that he’s special and all the other things that parents tell their children. He grows up with Aeralon and his wife, Siora, quite active in his life as well, and while their son, Orym, is his nephew, they bond more like brothers, being only a year apart- essentially the same age, in the lifespans of elves.

• Rhoen is incredibly excited at the prospect of magic. Aeralon is a prolific mage, his magic embodying the Allorn empire and its splendor of old. Many a day passes when he begs his brother to summon the archers and spearmen of their past, just to stare at them with wide-eyed wonder. Alicientella develops her magic around when Rhoen is five, a spacial warping sort, and he grows expectant for his gifts to develop- after all, there were two mages in the family, and while Severine was no mage, he could almost swear there was something mystical about her.

• Rhoen waits with bated breath on the eve of his eighth birthday. He wakes up and feels no different. He waits a bit more, patiently, and amuses himself with books on sciences and alchemy in the family library. Months pass, and it isn't until Rhoen turns ten that he realizes that whatever gifts he had been waiting for ... simply aren't coming. While initially not thinking much of the fact that his eyes are blue-green, and not the silvery-blue of his siblings, it becomes quite apparent that he's not like them in the slightest.

• Devastated by the revelation that he's mundane, Rhoen delves into the alchemy sciences, enthralled by the effects of the potions and poultices that could mimic the arcane connections he had craved since he was a child. While expecting himself to feel better through this pursuit, instead it launches Rhoen into a deep self-hatred, lowering his self-worth to a level even the most deprecating would worry for. Knowing, however, that his family would never recover politically from a spiral if he were to ever, he instead covers these bitter feelings with exaggerated self-love and vanity. Perhaps the only people ever to witness these feelings are Orym and his mother, Siora.

• Siora, a follower of Ellea and an alchemist herself, takes on Rhoen as an apprentice once she realizes his drive to learn the art. She becomes a mother figure to him despite being a sister-in-law, warm and present whereas his own birth mother, while loving, was a bit more distanced. As well, he finds himself confiding in her heavily. Siora encourages him to love himself, and the self-loathing is steadily lessening under her guidance. At the age of twenty-one, however, while traveling, the news finds its way back that Siora has met her end. The progress made immediately halts and reverts- Rhoen somehow finds a way to fault himself for her death and becomes despondent, but finishes his studies of alchemy in her memory.

• When he comes of age, Aeralon comes home to offer guidance to the pilgrimage all followers of Estel embark upon. Rhoen follows his brother, growing close to him in this time, and dreams of which god he will pick as his patron, though he has a feeling that he's been decided since the death of his mentor. Unsurprisingly to himself, he ends up choosing the goddess Ellea as his patron, the same as Siora before. He notes, however, Aeralon's masked disappointment in his only receiving a singular ring.

• Upon returning home, Rhoen and Aeralon part ways- Aeralon back to his own devices, and Rhoen to embark on another journey, this time with Orym. They roam aimlessly, in the paper-thin name of 'alchemical material gathering and studies' in Rhoen's case, and 'martial training' in Orym's, both unsure on where to go next. Letters find their way to his siblings documenting their travels as they go. Eventually, they find a city of Sundial Altalar that seem to have the boons they seek. He stumbles upon an elder who casts wondrous spells with the help of a glove. Intrigued, Rhoen makes his acquaintance and is wholly confused to learn that the man is no mage at all, but a magician. The magician, named Elaro, offers to teach Rhoen the craft, an offer he accepts immediately and enthusiastically, finding it closer to his siblings' skills than anything else he had found thus far.

• Elaro tutors Rhoen for almost three decades, upon which Rhoen is satisfied with all his learnings. He bids his teacher goodbye and heads back to the Rhylovhas family home. A letter comes back from Aeralon discussing the Holy City and its opportunity. Emboldened by his past learnings, and proud of his new skills, Rhoen travels to join his brother and the family there.

• Rhoen settles easily into the Holy City, finding an easy rhythm despite bumps in the beginning, especially with both siblings turned into Saivale when he arrives. After their respective reversions, he bonds closer than ever before with his brother, sister, and cousin in Regalia.

• On the thirty-first of July, 307 AC, Rhoen falls victim to many knives in the jungle of the Elven Moor, wielded by Wolond. His last words are a call for his big brother to help him, please-
