I've been thinking about this for a while...
I've recently been working on a comic submission for the story behind Lithiels departure form reglia after the purge- It's to explain her mission to confirm the location and safety of her home clan in Daendroc during the war.
Since I had no refferences to use for her origin living conditions and locations I thought maybe I'd try and build one myself. A small Lothar village- and try to extrapolate based on what is written in the lore right now, which will include the areas where the Yanar are a heavy influence.
I'm hoping this will give me as an aritst an better idea on-
1. how they'd look.
2. How big & what types of structures they'd use and most importantly - why- ?
It got me thinking a lot about about how a group of people who have the values that they do; what kind of living conditions the lothar would have given their way of life and the neighbors they share their livelihood with.
Currently this village is built on my personal server. As pictures ar euploade dI'll include snippets of what I was thinking during construction. Feedback is always appreciated. thank you for viewing.
UPDATE:
First things first: Where would the Lothar live?
Originally in Daendroc right? A place inhabited by jungles and swamps.
For a village a water source is a paramount inportance, and for a people with much riding on both their survival and way of life, finding a protected and secluded area would be very important as well.
For my first experiment, I decided to find a small water way lake in the deepest part of a jungle biome.
In my mind the tribal Lothar take to the trees for their home for a multitude of reasons.
Most importantly of them would be the protection during the night, and secrecy from onlookers. With home build right into the growing plantlife, Lotharian homes are hard to spot at a distance and sheltered by the natural foliage of their landscape.
Secondly. Lothar as a culture seek to rekindle their ancient ways of life. Living in tandem with the earth, with the supposedly harmonic civilization of their ancestors. Therefore, if a group were to discover a ruin with potencial, they'd seek to both protect and salvage it back to some semblance of it's former glory, and or use it for it's original purpose if possible.
This particular village I've contructed found a small ruin, long since reclaimed by nature, but in it's way surviving harmoniously with it.
Taking care to not disturb what's become of the wildlife around it, the Lothar have begun to tend it's shrine-like structure and place flowers in tribute to their goddess.
This particular ruin must have been a shrine at one point. The support pillars created a four cornered archway chamber that rose to open at the top to the sky to let the moonlight into the pool. While stone has fallen in, some of the arches remain. A tree has since grown into the cave chamber and worked it's way around the opening. Water flows in from a small water fall above. Orchids grow in abundance, and more are added and tended in tribute in the name of Estel.
Yanar Huts?
A thought occured to me; in comparison to their neighbors, what sort of structures would the Yanar use- if any? I've experimented that if the elves live in the tree tops, the yanar live at the trunk's base. Being entities of nature they require very little. Prefer a bed of moss to cotton sheets, but they are not unwelcome to the idea.
Furnished with flowers, bushes and branches -encouraged- by the natural power and influence the Yanar have over nature, these huts are nearly naturally-grown- in their contruction.
By being sheltered beneath a home of a Lotharian family, the Yanar are also protected by them, being archers of great skill, not a single monster can get very close before they are shot down from above. Because not only are these great places for the elves to live in safety, but also these homes become the perfect look out posts for their borders.
Agriculture. In keeping with the theme of living - with- the land and not just on it, the Lothar have no specific location for their sole farming purposes. But rather they find where plants and vegitables have begun to grow, and cultivate these 'spots' around their home
till enough are grouped up to support a village. It's not surprising to find the entire shoreline of their watersource culvivated to grow something.
Tilling and clearing trees is an ultimate LAST resort. There fore with the aid of the Yanar, the elves simply boost the natural growth of the clusteres of vegitables and produce already found, and grow them to the space they can naturally occupy under the best conditions. A single village will have dozens of these tiny gardens strewn about their home on the ground. The yanar are more then happy to watch over the proceedings and assist.
How are homes connected?
Agility and balance are akin to their kind, so simple walk ways can connect larger houses between supported trees. however, this isn't nessessary, except for one particular structure- the healing house.
Easy access to this specific house is most important, so multiple connections will run to it regardless if there are walkways anywhere else. There would even be a 'lift' bed to bring up people unable to to climb from below.
Lotharian living: Houses.
(Healing House)
Naturally the healing house is furnished perhaps the most, due to it's multiple occupants at any given time. What is specific about this house is it's location- usually at the epicenter of traffice for the village, so it has the easiest access.
Unlike living homes, it is also not lit nearly as much, unless a preceadure is happening. Why? The most easiest way for their village to be spotted is at night, when lights from torches can be easier to track. To provide the optimum level of protection, the healing house is 'not' lit as much, so it isn't as easy to spot. Filled with the wounded and ill, it is the most vulnerable. Since elves can see in low light this causes no hinerance to them.
(Single Living House)
Living off the land and eating what is caught or farmed that day means there is not need for much storage. A single home will consist of the bare essentials, a bed and cooking supplies, some small sotrage for personal belongings. The ovens are kept on the outer side of a hut, in the spot farthest away from the support tree, in case of fire. Usually by an open window. It's not unheard of for a possible out of control oven, to be put by the rain.
(Multichambered Family Home)
Because the huts must balance properly against the trunk of a tree, to keep the struture sturdy and steady, houses tended to be broken up into chambers that spiral upwards to the canopy. A house of over 4 would usually require this kind of home.
(Joint Houses)
Another home a larger family, can consist of two single chambers, joint together by a small walkway. Not every tree can be thick enough to support multiple chambers. So sometimes a larger home will be split up and instead be supported by two trees to hold it aloft.
