Karim was born in a small town in The United Qasr of Al-Alus, along with his brother, Hasim. He lived a very comfortable childhood; despite having been born a mage in a society that wasn't too accepting of them, he always counted with the support from his family and friends. However, things started to get complicated as soon as his early studies started.

Karim got into trouble quite often, seemingly unable to sit still for more than thirty minutes. It got to the point when the only thing stopping him from being expelled was his intellect. For a Skyborn of his age, Karim demonstrated an incredibly precocious level of skill for anything related to mathematics or physics. Despite always getting into trouble, Karim breezed through his academic affairs, soon enrolling into Al-Hamjad Hamanh College, where he would [exception NameError: name '66696E642061206C6F766572' is not defined], and of course, become an engineer. This manifested as Karim's basement becoming a workshop, though luckily money was never a problem when funding his contraptions.

And then came the elephant in the room: his magic. This whole time, he hadn't really learned to use it. It was there, dormant, with no use other than as a party trick. Yet at the ripe age of 18, Karim found something that had, so far, been kept from him: Technomancy. At a first glance, it sounded like a wonder. Not only would he be able to get rid of many technical issues simply by fueling technology with magic, but the possibilities of what he could do suddenly tenfolded. You could change the laws of physics, reality, matter. You could do almost anything.

However, as soon as he showed this idea to his peers and family, none of them were too fond of it. It sounded too experimental. Too unknown. It sounded like cheating, too, which he guessed in some aspects it was. It started slow. First, he learned how to power technology with magic instead of electricity, which removed the need for batteries or a power source. Then, he started going further, trying to properly use magic to accomplish things he wouldn't be able to. With things he knew well: force, speed, temperature, color. Then further: light, magic itself, and even time. Not exactly time magic, but the best next thing: The chrono school.

It was difficult, of course. Living in a skyborn-populated society meant that there wasn't much access to learning magic in general. Technomancy was a lot more common, but still relatively rare. This led to Karim taking a more scientific approach to magic than most, first understanding a topic from a mundane point of view before trying to execute it with magic.

Soon enough, a year passed. He had gotten relatively skilled at technomancy, yet his reputation stayed the same. A young promise that succumbed to cheating. But he didn't care, or rather, he tried not to. Disappointment was heavy. Though, as soon as he managed to bend time and restore items to their original state, the load became lighter.

The machine he used to accomplish such a thing was quite big. It almost took up a whole room, which everyone knows is the mark of a lousy design. Overengineered to oblivion. Not a problem. Once he knew what to do, all he had to do was make it smaller. He managed to make it a small device, almost like a gauntlet, strapped to his arm. Much better.

Now, when it came to venting, Karim had heard of multiple techniques. Magestone venting would be the ideal, but to build everything was already a financial burden, and he didn't want to add magestones to the shopping list. Considering most mages cast magic out of a pile of rocks, or literally nothing, he thought the very nature of technomancy would count as reagent venting, and therefore decided to forget about the subject.

And then he was proven wrong. Sure, it took care of some of the strain of reality, but you can only completely neglect venting to its breaking point.

It was an afternoon like any other. He remembered his father's comment on his last visit: to remove a giant metal square in his living room. About damn time. But before he was to take it down, he wanted to run it one last time, just for fun. So, he took a fork, broke it, and put it in.

What followed was highly technical. In short, the magic corruption had been building up. It made the cooling system stop working, causing the entire system to overheat, which made it catch on fire, leading to an arc flash explosion.

All of that in six seconds, with no warning other than a loose bolt falling off at second five.
The explosion knocked him unconscious, and then everything went white.

The explosion was so strong, Karim had been in a coma for seven months, almost a whole year. Due to its magical nature, the magical corruption severely damaged him, seeping past his skull and into his brain. They had to find a mage with knowledge on the counter school.

They ended up enchanting a helmet, and putting it on his head. It was something that could stabilize the magic going rampant there. Something that could keep him alive. Long story short: if he takes it off, he dies. But hey, at least it aids in hiding that hideous scar that had formed underneath.

Despite having just woken up from a month-old coma, Karim had to stay in the clinic for a bit longer. A day or two, to run tests, stab his shoulder, make sure everything was alright. Miraculously, he didn't acquire any permanent disabilities, other than the piece of metal permanently stuck on his head.

When he got out, he immediately headed to his house. It looked abandoned, half destroyed, with a clear attempt to clean it up, only halfway. Crazy how quickly things age in six months. His next step was to meet all his friends, but only a few of them remained. Some left town, some left the country, some got arrested. Crazy how quickly things change in six months.

Hasim suggested Karim move somewhere else, to clear his mind, perhaps start over. After some research, Karim settled on Regalia. Hasim wasn't too keen on him going there, for whatever reason, but once Karim settles on something, there's little anyone can do to change his mind.

And so, with a swift goodbye to his hometown and a toolbox with all the essentials, Karim took off to Regalia in search of multiple things. Perhaps friendship, money, or a place to finally practice technomancy without the usual disapproving gazes. Either way, he traveled west, to where the sun sets, that beckoned him.
