House Words: "Try as you may"
Family Sigil: A Griffin on a checkered background
Family Colors: Blue, white, and black
Culture: Höglander
Religion: Unionist
Family Values: Power and Charity
Business: Opium and fertilizer
History:
For most of the Skarpsten family's history, their house has been nothing more than a minor house with little significance other than supplying a decent percentage of the empire's opium. Legend has it that the family originated with the union of a self-made fertilizer maker and the scheming, disinherited eldest daughter of an upper-middle-class family, who fell in love with each other and became partners in both business and matrimony. All recent generations have dismissed that story for what it most likely is: a romanticized tale. They instead tell of a knight who earned favor from his lord during the Skagger Wars and was granted a plot of land.
After the relatively recent passing of Felix Skarpsten in an accident involving slippery floors and a fireplace, the reins to House Skarpsten were left to his two twin sons, the ambitious Erik and more intelligent Gustav. Having big plans for House Skarpsten and convinced that his more academically-oriented brother wouldn't see them through, Erik immediately declared war upon Gustav for the title. Despite Gustav being more than willing to hand over power to Erik, Erik took the opportunity to wage war against other minor houses and any family members who may stand in his way, eventually destroying the competition and even causing the deaths of half his family. In an effort to try and quell Erik, Gustav made various attacks with chemicals and gasses, which all failed due to the soldiers not understanding that they too would die if they inhaled such substances; both Erik and Gustav each lost a son to this confusion. In the end, Erik defeated Gustav and declared himself the new patriarch of House Skarpsten.
