HISTORY
The Merlo family's history and roots in Old Ceardia - indeed, even their old name - are long since forgotten, destroyed by the dark tendrils. What is remembered by those few who knew them in those days is that they always had a knack for the underhanded, even in their old lands. Indeed, while practically all of their possessions were lost on their fleeing the devastation the void had wrought, they still had this cunning, and put it to good use. They began to do charity work, helping other refugees greatly, and in the process getting them set up with jobs - at a logging business of their own, of course. Quickly they began taking over land and influence, undercutting the competition with the cheap labour the many refugees offered, and they soon enough ended up using this influence to buy out land overseas, in Vultaro, where their family relocated - and where they picked up the Dressolini culture. Occasional rumours persist in their lands of the family being infiltrated by Void worshippers in recent decades, but these seem to be nothing more than baseless theorising. Even if it were true, their appearance of zealous unionism is a solid one by any account.
