House Bavere's story in the Archipelago began in 155. AC, where a portion of the family whose origins were in Joyau-vert du Nord joined the Ithanian Fleet, sailing up the Shoenn River and settling on the northern banks in fertile land with the intent on mining but found limited gemstones and minerals in Callas than in the southern Girobalda. Instead they decided to grow the land, planting grape seeds brought with the immigrants to begin growing wine, which at the time the best of was mostly being imported from the Motherland. By 157. AC, the first bottles were being traded around, and most importantly taken to the Imperial Palace in Regalia by Lady Vichieve Bavere. It was said when the Emperor Heinrich III tasted Bavere's creation that he was enlightened, increasing his knowledge to the level he is known for. However it is accepted that the Emperor indeed enjoyed the wine so much, he requested House Bavere stock the Imperial Palace and Irvae cellars for the foreseeable future, and sent the family funds towards overseeing Viticulture advancement in the region. Vichieve was ennobled as the Baroness of Coulogne, and she founded la Riviere Academie de Vinification, a winemakers college that would later become a hub for Evergrowth Mages, eager to help develop new processes. The Baroness' legacy would be remembered for generations, with many statues and artworks dedicated to her around Coulogne as the family owe all to her.

Vichieve passed the Barony to her eldest daughter Sofia-Maria once she died. Sofia-Maria was a great patron of the arts and spent years directing theatre acts, hosting great galas and festivals. She proclaimed the Four Seasons Festivals, a duty of Burdigalans to celebrate the changing of weather and a season's worth of reflection. Sofia-Maria sired six children in her lifetime, known for her intense motherhood and coddling. In 233. AC, a sickness of Consumption fell over the land, infecting Coulogne and surrounding baronies in an event known as the Callas Plague. While efforts were made to isolate the capital and house physicians did all they could, all six of Sofia-Maria's children died, and several of her grandchildren. Bittered and confused as to why this had happened to her, Sofia-Maria would turn to the Everwatcher for guidance and take the cloth, renouncing her title in 240. AC and leaving for Bastadon. Here she remained until the end of her days. While she was loving, joyful and pious during her life, her legacy is tainted with legend. Long after her death there was persistence of a 'Sofia Bavere', a wraith-like monster in the woods of Coulogne. No conclusive evidence exists of any such creature has been recorded and it mostly acts as a bedtime story for children not to venture out at night, or Mrs. Bavere will catch and eat you.

Coulogne passed on to Agnes Bavere, the eldest granddaughter of Sofia-Maria. Immediately into her rule she entered into the Perrion War, supporting Arch-Chancellor Morgan in conquests in the west. What was supposed to be a few years war turned into a long hauling near two-decade siege against the well defended Perrion, resulting in many years of Agnes being absent from Coulogne. The war took its toll as the Regalian Pessimism took effect, and Agnes spent many years following administrative efforts to revive the local economy which took its toll on her health. She also served terms on the Regalian Senate, representing the Callas region until she worked herself into the grave.

Her daughter Bianca took over her positions, leading the house into the Chrysant War and through the end of the Pessimism. In 287. AC at one of the Four Season Festivals, Bianca was approached by an orange-eyed man and the two hit off very quickly. After a drunken fling, he was revealed to be the Fornoss God Aedan and left without saying much else, as his love resided elsewhere. Nine months later, a Godborn was born whom she named Rohan for his ginger features. Bianca led the family into the new Kade dynasty of Emperors and would send armies to wars campaigned by Cedromar. She died without other heirs, so her only son Rohan took over the barony.

Rohan is a different cut from the cloth than his predecessors. While Burdigalans enjoy a hedonistic lifestyle, Rohan has reshaped his entire court around the need to party, feast, hunt and worship his Fornoss father. The Revelborn is known for imposing strength, but also a wielder of great magic. He has opened the doors of his court even to commoners on occasion, which draws the ire of fellow aristocrats.

  • General House Theme:
    • House Bavere is a Noble House that leans heavily into its culture, Burdigalan Ithanian. They have a prestigious background in vinification and winemaking and have even had their brand in stock in the Imperial Palace. The family is centered around the current Baron, a Revelborn who is known for his constant drinking and feasting. Members and Courtiers of the family know how to have a good time above all else.
    Political Nature:
    On the subject matter of:
    • Government Type:
      • Feudalism of the Lords, a more powerful assembly to govern the Empire.
    • Imperial Family:
      • State Loyal. Close with previous Ivrae Emperors. Politically Neutral to Kade Dynasty.
    • Vultarin Hegemony:
      • Politically Neutral (until they cross the Shoenn.)
    • Callas Politics:
      • Leaders in the region, often feuding with other barons over petty things like vineyard boundaries and art taste.
    • Monarchy Power:
      • Limited, many Burdigallic houses believe in their own power over the people and the power of barons and counts.
    • Political Philosophy:
      • Centrists
    • Noble Privilege:
      • Absolute under oath loyalty to the Emperor & Empire.
    • Religious Faith:
      • Dogmatic Unionism, especially towards Juvin. More recently Fornoss has become acceptable.
    • Magic & Occult:
      • Pro-Occult, working with mages to perfect viticulture and magic scholarship.
    • Gender Norms:
      • Equally shared roles, an Ithanian normality.
    • Marriage:
      • Restricted to landed Regalian noble families.
    • Affiliations:
      • Both Unionist and Fornoss worshipers (Specifically Gods Juvin and Aedan)
      • Occult Circles
  • Titles:
    • Baron of Coulogne
    Holdings:
    • City of Coulogne
      • The City of Coulogne is the heart of the Barony that shares its name and the capital of Callas. Founded in 155. AC by Vichieve Bavere, 1st Baroness, the city rests on the banks of the Grand Shoenn River, the trade artery of the Regalian Empire. As such it is a great exporter of Bavere Wine, being one of the larger inland-port cities in the Callas region. The city is the capital of Burdigallic culture, with many museums, grand courtyards for social events and exhibitions.
        • Palais de Bavere - The seat of Bavere power, a large castle palace that sits in the river shallows. Filled with great works of art and statues, the central banquet hall is always alive and vibrant regardless of the Baron's presence.
        • Port au Bourgogne - The main port of Coulogne and center of trade in Callas, capable of hosting multiple merchant vessels alongside House Bavere's private river fleet. The port is home to many warehouses and goods, as well as dozens of taverns always packed with dockworkers.
        • The Sihndal Quarter - A district of the city with a sizeable Sihndar population. Some are Sihn-Fallar, Sihndar who have abandoned their duties to indulge in lazy lifestyles. Some are campaigners for the struggles of Drowda, courting the Baron for donations of charity. The Sihndar here are glassworkers, producing bottles for Bavere wine.
        • The Kolnere Cathedral - A large twin-spire cathedral that dominates the cityscape. While it has predominantly been a Unionist temple, there now exists a small section for Fornoss Syncretists to please the current Baron, to the dismay of the local Celery.
        • La Riviere Academie de Vinification - A Viticulture College founded by Vichieve Bavere, and potentially one of the most prestigious in Aloria- or at least within Corontium. Notably has a large Evergrowth Mage presence.

    • The Bavere Terrior
      • A vast valley of three large vineyards owned by the family. These are controlled by Intendants, stewards appointed by the Baron as he sees fit. They are usually Role Courtiers or close friends who benefit off the earnings from their vineyards.
        • Château de L'Orme - The original seat of House Bavere, now a Summer estate. This castle is notable for the Great Elm tree in its courtyard, grown from a seed brought with them from Ithania. This Estate is currently leased to Intendant Baron Rohan Bavere.
        • Château de La Rive d'Emeraude - A mansion on the banks of the Shoenn, surrounded by lush green hills. It is nicknamed 'The Emerald House' because of this environment. This Estate is currently leased to Intendant Sera Vilgemar Tournesol (NPC).
        • Vignoble de Dieu-Juvin - A vineyard named for the God-Emperor Heinrich III who ennobled House Bavere, this vineyard is the most productive of the three due to its close work with Evergrowth Mages. This Estate is currently leased to Intendant Monte Baptiste (NPC).

    • Winehall Manor
      • An estate in the Crown Isle countryside, House Bavere has commandeered this plantation to host the Baron's banquets when in the city. This estate has been inhabited by other aristocratic houses such as von Wulfmacht and Vauclain in the past. (accessible via countryside estate carriage)

Court of Coulogne

Instead of recruiting family members, this is my attempt at a 'Vultarin Court' esc Court experience that I will DM, open to people who play commoner characters and knights. It is also open to other non-titled noble characters unless title holders attempt vassalage. The Court of Coulogne acts like an organization with two tiers of membership, the Role Courtiers and the Humdrum Courtiers. Role Courtiers are permanent fixtures of the Court and are responsible for different tasks and achieving goals to satisfy the Baron. They are also coded to interact with the major groups of Regalia so there will always be opportunities for them. Humdrum Courtiers are those who are more fluid, hired oath guards, contractors or those trying to enter the Baron's inner circle. The Baron is always wanting, so there will be opportunities for fetch quests, mercenary contracts and general thuggery. He is also rich and a bargainer, so deals may always be sought out with the Court Chamberlain. Those who work under the Baron are rewarded over time with funding grants or other indulgences. Generally I want this to be a fun experience and roleplay generator for myself and others with characters being able to influence changes in the court and have a slice of life government organization experience. If you want your character to have a job, this could be the place to look.

The Baron of Coulogne

Baron Rohan Bavere is a Revelborn who has taken over ruling after the passing of his late mother. He is known for his gregariousness and hedonistic lifestyle, always needing to drink, feast and seek out entertainment. Because of this he has become rather ignorant to the going ons of the world around him, requiring Courtiers to do some explaining from time to time and frequently goes over their advice. He shifts his political opinions quite often depending on where his influences are coming from, positions that can be crucial to going-ons in Coulogne or his Court in Regalia. One wouldn't doubt the Baron's capability however, he is strong and magical, often cruel to those who annoy him.

Humdrum Courtiers:
This is a list of Courtiers who hold lower positions within the court, or are guests of the Baron. These include Baronal Guard, Informants and Entertainers.

Role Courtiers:
This list makes up the glue of the Court of Coulogne. Each role has their own description, click on one to learn more.
  • Court Chamberlain
    • The Chamberlain looks after the Baron above all, and is his right hand. Their role means making sure the kitchens are very well stocked, servants and Humdrum Courtiers are behaving, and the Court of Coulogne is running like clockwork. They have a lot of sway over the Baron and he is more likely to take advice from them than anyone else, so it is a much sought after position.
    • [Current:]
  • Court Diplomat
    • The Diplomat is the link between House Bavere and the other aristocracy of Regalia, as well as the Imperial Family. They are usually an experienced aristocrat who sets up meetings with other titled nobility on the Baron's behalf, as well as smoothing over diplomatic relations in case the rowdiness of the Baron becomes offensive or irritable.
    • [Current:]
  • Court Commander
    • The Commander of the Baronal Guard oversees the personal retinue of the Baron and is his utmost protection. They are in charge of vetting bodyguard applications, organizing hunts, discussions with the Regalian Military/Knight Orders and commanding battles on the Baron's behalf. They are usually a Knight themselves.
    • [Current:]
  • Court Spymaster
    • The Spymaster is in charge of maneuvering intrigue schemes the Baron is participating in, as well as routing out those who would oppose the Baron and question loyalties. They might have contact with more unsavoury characters not often seen at court that the Baron needs to deal with, such as afflicted or criminals.
    • [Current:]
  • Court Host
    • The Host provides the Court of Coulogne with entertainment, music, and overall merriment. In the current court structure this position is paramount and making sure the Baron is satisfied is their number one goal. It is their role to help the Baron organize banquets, tournaments, hunts, socials etc. They usually have a connection to the Hoterie Order, or are an entertainer themselves in music or dance.
    • [Current:]
  • Court Especial
    • The Especial is the current Court Favourite, someone who has outshone all over Courtiers and has the Baron's ear. They are sometimes a lover, but usually a good friend who has shown care for the Baron and vice versa.
    • [Current:]
  • Court Antiquarian
    • The Antiquarian attends to the Baron's collections. This pertains to any Artifacts, artwork, statues, books, jewelry etc. that need categorizing and maintenance. Having such a grand collection it is susceptible to robbery and the Antiquarian must work with the Court Commander to organize security.
