Finally At Rest

"Get up then. Show me that you're no longer a spineless coward, Vauclain."

"..."

"Leave her alone. You have no right to speak to my sister that way, you disgusting woman."

"Leave her be. You have no power here now."

"So you're her protectors again? Making up for how you failed?"

"Overthrow the Queen, overthrow the Queen!"

"Would someone please shut that bird up?"

The study grew quiet as the occupants turned to look at the figure slouched at their desk.

The figure's hair was a mane of unruly curls and had not been touched by a brush or been attended to all day. The outfit they wore was a simple nightgown covered by a thin, but clearly comfortable dressing robe. A soft noise would occasionally escape them, the only true sound that allowed any onlooker to realize that they were still alive. Breathing, slow, shallow breathing as the figure finally rested after much argument with herself.

One of the other occupants of the rooms, a green eyed, blonde scoffed as she watched the figure.

"She finally gets to rest and we're all damned stuck here."

"No one is stopping you from leaving. You are free to leave when you please."

Spoke the only male in the room- a man dressed in deep red and gold evening wear. He glanced slightly towards the third- a woman in a purple and white gown, her hands folded behind her back as she leaned slightly over the figure at the desk.

The final occupant, save for the figure at the desk, was a crow who sat perched upon the top edge of a bookshelf. The animal clicked softly before letting out its chorus again: "Overthrow the Queen! Overthrow th-"

"Be quiet…" The figure at the desk raised her head slowly, mane of curls shifting revealing a pale face and a pair of icy blue eyes.

The foursome turned all eyes upon Darcie now, the crow seemed almost… surprised by the interruption of its call.

"Darcie…"

"Didn't I tell you to go haunt someone else?"

"Such disrespect and distaste for the sister you hid behind! I'm rather surprised."

"The only resentment and distaste I have anymore lies with you. You're the spineless woman who believed herself to be more powerful and conniving than me. I did not love you, now begone you snake."

Darcie stared down the blonde who hissed in anger and seemed to disappear. She then moved on to glare at the spectral crow upon her bookshelf who seemed to caw and cry as it slowly began to fade, just as the woman before it did.

Slowly, she rose from her desk and departed from her study, bringing her two spectral protectors with her. Darcie did not speak as she settled down onto her bed and curled into the blankets. Closing her eyes, she fell into a deep sleep.

She would rest easy for the first time in many weeks. No dreams of angry lovers or decaying animals. No dreams of a child with hair of auburn and eyes of the sea.

Darcie was safe. She was guarded by those who loved her. At least… within her dreams and mind she was once more safe.

For now.
