Dragonstone’s Coronation - Desolation Lore

Dragonstone pushed open the heavy wooden doors of the Great Hall of Desolation and was faced with a gust of wind. He stood in awe and was struck dumb by the sheer number of people who were attending, and the love that they showed him. Each citizen of Desolation was present. Everyone stood silenced by anticipation. At last he gathered his senses.
‘Why so quiet?’ Dragonstone shouted to his people with a smile. At once the Hall erupted into cheers.

Dragonstone strode down the aisle, stopping periodically to converse directly with the citizens, thanking them personally for their attendance. He was certainly one of the most charismatic Kings of Desolation. He enjoyed thoroughly every moment. Eventually he reached the throne, and, upon sitting down, the attendees cheered even louder. After a few moments, the cheers settled and the Angel Priest assumed his position - about three paces to the left of Arthur.

‘People of Desolation,’ he announced, ‘do you find Arthur Dragonstone suitable as your King?’ An avalanche of cheering struck the Angel Priest.
‘Arthur Dragonstone, are you prepared to take on the great responsibility that is Kingship? Are you prepared to lay down your life for your people if necessary, and show them your undying respect? Are you prepared to lead your armies into the depths of the rift, showing nothing but confidence that you will prevail? Are you prepared to take on this role?’

There was a brief moment of completely cold silence in the room. Arthur smiled. ‘I am.’ Once again the people erupted into cheers. But this time it was only short lived, for they knew what was about to take place.

‘It is now time for the Proof of Worth.’ Ailvord Melina announced. Arthur’s face lost its youthful joviality and at once showed nothing but the utmost seriousness. He sat totally motionless, and began to feel goosebumps cover his body. It was natural for him to be nervous at this point, yet despite his anxiousness, his veins flowed with confidence. A small region of the stone floor in front of him opened up and the Axe of Desolation rose up, levitating. It was emitting a purple and golden glow. Each member of the congregation fixated their gaze on the Axe - it was exceptionally rare for any person to see it. It was captivating. It had a head forged of a blue crystal, and as a result was slightly translucent. It’s handle was whittled from a branch that belonged to the Great Tree of Morudias - the ancient predecessor of Desolation. There was an unidentifiable yellow gem decorating the centre of the axe head, encrusted in a band of steel which attached to the handle.

‘Please take your grasp.’ Ailvord told Arthur. Dragonstone would have to wield the Axe and only then would he be named King. If he was unworthy, the Axe would instantly kill him as a result of its sheer power and volunteers from the congregation would then be given the chance to attempt to wield the Axe themselves, with the same dreadful fate awaiting the unworthy. Ailvord Melina announced this fact to the people.

Dragonstone stood up, with his eyes locked upon the axe. He took a step forward, and then another. He extended his arm forward and began to lean onto the front of his feet. His hand met the handle, and he wrapped each finger around it. His grip tightened, and after a few moments the axe’s glow vanished. It was no longer levitating. About a second passed before the axe exploded with a silver light. Arthur Dragonstone felt the axe’s weight and stood firm - allowing the weapon’s power and energy to flow through his body. The silver light of the axe began to diverge, and split into eight separate beams which focused upon the eight unlit torches around the throne. The torches burst into flames at once which signalled the birth of a new era of Kingship. Arthur Dragonstone had claimed the throne. He threw up the axe above his head, for all to see, with the silver light still beaming strongly. The people of Desolation at last had a King. After years of nomadism with no leader - they finally had direction.
