With the recent update to the texture pack, when using Optifine, placing two stone slabs together makes this interesting design (left), and placing more than four on top of each other makes a column (right). While this is useful and pleasant to look at now, it's also mucked up some of the previous things we've built (our castle now appears to have iron walls).

I suggest the addition of a recipe to craft the stone slab block that's often used at spawn (seen here). It could be crafted by putting two stone slabs on top of each other.

I think it would be a great idea to add such crafting receipt. But I do rather like this one to be different than you just explained. The ordinary placing of 2 slabs on top of one another makes a (double slab stone) not sure if I spelled that right…. But the crafting receipt you suggested should make this double slab and then this double slab should be placed in 2x2 grid making 4 double slabs into 4 of those blocks you wanted to make. I hope I make sense up here. But that's just what I would do… :)

I'd love to have access to those special slabs, but I'm pretty sure thats only accessible via WorldEdit because thats a data value trick.
Indeed, it is a datavalue trick. These blocks ( when crafted) woul appear as normal slabs in you inventory. Thos would confuse the majority of the playerbase, espicially if they get mixed in a chest or inventory. You cannot place a normal and such a slab on each other.

After sharding we might implement something that cowboys made, this will let you create them without a recipe ;)

The only way to access it would be to mass produce it and sell it at high prices.

Cowboys and me were looking into the possibility of changing the blocks ingame, with no recipe....more like really chiseling a stone when he is already placed. That would be the approach to make it obvious to all players. Selling them in a chestshop (generally having these blocks in the inventory) is not that great.
