He lived in a temple with her, being raised by most of the temple workers alongside his mother. Due to his halfbreed status, Bitters was not allowed outside the temple, out of his mothers fear of him having to face discrimination. As a result, he never had any friends his age and spent his time in the temple feeling lonely. At age six, his father returned to the temple to collect him, despite his mother’s protests, rename him, and take him back to Etosil. His father was nearing seventy, and every son he had either died before reaching adulthood, or had some sort of disability. On top of that, his wife died and he didn’t want to die before he could remarry and have another child, so Bitters was his last hope for an heir. ✧Bitters was not happy with any of this, but since he was still very young, he was easily subdued and controlled. Almost immediately, his father had him start training. Bitters went from having nothing to do to having too much. He spent every hour of the day either learning about weaponry and combat tactics, or doing basic schooling and learning about Unionism. His father was perhaps taking his frustration out on the boy by forcing him to endure all this training. He knew that despite Bitters being his last hope, he would never be allowed to become a proper knight like him due to being a Feka. But that wouldn’t stop him from ingraining the order’s practices and teachings into the young boy’s mind. ✧At ten years old, Vyacheslav (his father) began taking the boy on raids against those deemed enemies of Unionism, and enforce the slavery laws around the country. Bitters witnessed battles and skirmishes and the horrors of slave ships. This was all part of his training, to desensitize him so he could do the same thing when he was older, though these experiences still haunt him. ✧At age fourteen, during one of these ride alongs, Bitters and his half brothers were captured by one of the rebels his father was battling and brought back to their keep, where he was held captive for months. They wanted money from the knight, though he refused to pay them, even when his son was threatened. Bitters attempted an escape once with his half brothers, and was shot with a crossbow. They brought him back and treated his wounds. On his second attempt, he was successful, this time going alone. He returned home on a stolen horse, battered and exhausted, confronting his father. His father seemed largely indifferent to the whole situation, though, and Bitters would never get to see his half brothers again, never learning what had happened to them. ✧Bitters returned to his training like nothing happened, filled with a new disdain for his father and the order he belonged to. He was never given a reason as to why his father never attempted to rescue him, but he was fairly certain it was because his father didn’t think he would amount to anything, like his half brothers that would never be rescued either. He was forced to reflect on the purpose of his life, and ultimately decided he would become a proper soldier and bounty hunter out of spite. ✧His father grew ill when Bitters was seventeen, and died shortly after in the middle of the night. His last wish was to see his son, who was finally turning into the man he wanted him to become, but Bitters ignored this wish, simply telling the servants that came to fetch him to leave him be as he was trying to sleep. Bitters adopted this new coldblooded persona to match his profession.
