Her paternal grandparents were jewelers and taught her to appraise gems and make simple jewelry. Her mother’s parents were farmers, and she’d often spend time helping her grandmother in her vegetable garden. Amalia had a passion for music from an early age and learned dance, singing, and violin from a private tutor. As is common among the Azzizzari, she grew up in a large family and was the eldest of five siblings. She quickly developed a strong sense of responsibility and strived to be a role model for her younger siblings. Given that her father occupied an important position in her town, the Mercantes would often host large gatherings at their home. At these parties, Amalia discovered her talent for making friends and was well-loved among the townspeople. Elders would praise her incessantly, declaring that she was sure to marry well. Age 8-16 However, she would soon have to abandon the idyllic landscape of Ascillia. Amalia’s father was a social climber and he moved the family to upper Vultaro, where he served as an economic adviser to a Dressolini nobleman and ran a spice trading company. The nobleman and her father became close friends, and Amalia was raised among nobility. She was drilled in the social norms of the Dressolini and was taught to be a lady, learning skills such as embroidery and dressmaking. Though she genuinely enjoyed traditionally feminine pursuits, she also took up Dressolini fencing and became competent with a rapier. Her music education also intensified during this time and she was tutored in d’Ithanie and Daendroquin. Amalia was quick to assimilate into Dressolini culture and was popular among the gentry. Her father recognized her social intelligence and often brought her to business meetings, where she would observe him work and occasionally butter up potential customers. Age 17-Present After Tristan Lampero’s rise to power in 300 AC and the political unrest that followed, greater pressure was put on Amalia to marry well to ensure the security of the family. The Mercante family business suffered immense losses and soon Amalia’s father became bedridden from years of overworking himself. Following the Orc takeover of Montania and Vultaro, Amalia’s father perished and she was tasked with helping run the family business, as her younger brothers were still too young to take over. Despite her natural talent for administration, the Mercante Spice Company collapsed on itself and Amalia took a job as a governess for several years to support her family. Eventually, her sisters were married off and her brothers went off to join the army. Given that she had no prospects, Amalia’s father’s former employer took pity on her and arranged a marriage between her and his cousin, a dopey middle aged man. Following her engagement, Amalia’s mother returned to Ascillia to live with her sister’s family, leaving Amalia alone in the mainland. Faced with a loveless future, Amalia ultimately decided to break off the engagement to pursue work in Regalia. Her ex-fiance, though disappointed, supported her decision and paid for her passage to the city. Mercante now hopes to find a job as a seamstress and eventually become a successful businesswoman.
