A Historical Look At Herbsthafen

Precolonial Era, Late 200s
Regalian Migration and Colonization of New Ceardia

Gateway to the Colonies

Located on the southeastern end of Hinter Calem, on the eastern end of the Regalian Archipelago, the holding of Herbsthafen held a dramatically different appears compared to the port city of today. Herbsthafen was, by the 250s, a coastal fishing and farming village with a meager population. The holding itself held many small villages nearby, though they have yet to collectively establish a town. This began to change with the desire by Regalians to move and make a new life in the colonies of New Ceardia. At first, a handful of migrants would pass by the village, as it had easy access to the east, and an ideal location for a harbour. As the flow of migrants dramatically grew, encompassing peoples from all over the Regalian Archipelago, the humble village grew into a town, attracting locals from nearby to establish business in the town, and investments for functioning harbour. As the numbers rapidly swelled, Herbsthafen underwent what is referred to as "Das Aufblühen" or The Blossoming, a time of rapid population growth and development that transformed Herbsthafen into the port city it is today.

Das Aufblühen - The Blossoming

Das Aufblühen occured in two stages, the first being the centralizing of a port town that became Herbsthafen, and the development of a harbour by local peoples moving to the area, and the second following after with the settlement of many migrants of Anglian and Ithanian descent. This is not to be overshadowed by the fact that many Regalians of the Hinter Calem also migrated, as well as many other cultural groups, notably Highland Ceardian.
By the 280s, Herbsthafen found itself a vital access point to the colonies, profiting as the gateway to the east. As the city swelled with migrants to the colonies and trade, many decided to settle in or around the city, most notably the Ithanian and Anglian migrants, especially from Angle Veer. Many Anglian Veers took note to the farming and fishing lifestyle of the people prior to Das Aufblühen and it's similarity to the lifestyle of their home isle, causing thousands to settle in and around the city, in it's fertile fields to farm. At first, the local Calemburger people detested the idea of their land being settled and robbed of them, however, the wealth and skills the migrates brought, as well as their philosophy help to establish a bond and union between the different peoples.
This proved powerful during the Regalian Pessimism, in which the local Anglian Veers reached out for support from their homeland, which, at the time, actually profited from an error of relative economic faultier through food production and insuring food for noble houses and their levi armies through a policy known as Food Insurance, in which a noble house pays a monthly fee for the guarantee that during wartime, a set plot of land will sell it's food only to that house for their armies at a discounted rate, ensuring their levies a steady food supply. This saved Herbsthafen from the brunt of the Regalian Pessimism and drew the respect of the local Calemburger people. This combined with the mixing of cultures for the last 50 years resulted in a more unified identity for the city's citizens, taking up many Anglian Veer philosophical beliefs such as education for the people, early teachings of both academics and military to the youth.
