Neil Black

Basic Information

• Neil Orlando Black is a twenty-seven year old male Ceardian Ailor .
  
  
• Neil was born to Daniel and Angela Black in his family homeland Narlas, Dragenthal on 276 AC. Neil was the third and youngest son of Daniel Black. He was born five years after his eldest sibling Chris, and three years after Phillip, his older brother. After Neil was born, Angela brought Jocelyn into the world making their family whole. Neil, Phillip, and Jocelyn reside in Regalia while Chris remains with the family fleet.
  
  
• Neil has recently procured a warehouse in the Poor District for business use, but he personally lives in Chris’ Ithanian home. Now that Chris and Lidia have left Regalia, Neil has been spending more time in the warehouse taking care of any trade that passes through House Black.
  
  
• Neil’s main goal is to return his family’s honor. Currently Neil is wants to contract an military position and gather more military experience.

Body Description

• Neil stands at five foot, eleven inches tall and weighs 172 lbs. His frame is of a medium size. His chest is in a triangle shape, his abs of a larger proportion than the lower half. Both his arms and legs are in well toned from long days of swimming.
  
  
• Neil has a light tan from many days laboring in the sun. He has one tattoo. Upon his left arm, he has a long sea serpent tattoo running from his wrist, up his forearm, ending on his upper chest above his heart. The head of the serpent is posed to bite his heart.
  
  
• Neil has a thin layer of hair covering his arms and legs. His chest is void of any major patches of hair, giving him a more clean shaven look.

Head Description

• Neil has a strong, angular face like the rest of his kin. His jawline his highly prominent, adding to his angular look. His nose is of a medium size, proportionate to the rest of his face. His ears are also of a average size. Neil doesn’t possess any scars upon his face or body.
  
  
• Neil’s eyes possess a deep hue of green. His eyes are roundish almond in shape. His look gives off the appearance of optimism, but retains the familial “Brooding Black” look.
  
  
• His hair is dark brown in color and kept at a short length. It is unkempt and and coarse, not taking time to keep it in well order. Whenever Neil is landside, he prefers to keep a clean shave. However, when he takes long voyages he allows his beard to grow out.
  
  
• Neil doesn’t have any tattoos or markings on his face.

Clothing and Accessories

• To retain the look of a noble while keeping a practical sense of clothing, Neil wears black silk tunics and dark leather boots and jackets. He often keep his right arm exposed to flaunt his arm and tattoo.
  
  
• Neil doesn’t have anything of special meaning on him. The only accessories of note would be the two metal bands on his right arm.

Behavior Information

Personality Traits

• Valiant: The Black’s known courageous falls upon Neil as it does on all other Blacks. Though not as reckless as his brothers, he will stick his neck on the line to defend his friends and family. Hopefully this restraint will provide him better luck than the past two Black patriarchs.
  
  
• Troubled: With the recent moving of his family and renouncing of the family titles has left Neil feeling uneasy. Sudden changes have caused him to be wary of holding anything dear to him. These changes have come so often and drastic that he always expecting another to happen.
  
  
• Adventurous: Neil, still in the prime of his youth, craves adventure like any other man of his age. The ideas of fighting a worthy enemy for a worthier cause is idolized to him. He is the first to sign up for anything that he sees as a high feat.
  
  
• Vulgar: Neil has learned many a word in his times at sea. Meeting a wide variety of people, he has learn a wider set of swears and curses. He usually restrains this tongue in the presence of others, however he can’t help himself from thinking ill of others who are ignorant or pompous.
  
  
• Optimistic: Through the poor events that have made life for House Black difficult, Neil has kept a positive view on life. Occasionally viewed as naive, Neil doesn’t keep negative thoughts long. This is taking as annoying by others to say the least.
  
  
• Inventive: Neil places his own spin on how he performs actions. A mixture between a reckless Black and a by the book noble. Neil is blend of reckless and abideful. He thinks of different ways to do perform that neither of the two could.
  
  
• Unreal: A fake face for a court of deceit. Neil keeps up a farce whenever in with other nobles that he doesn’t trust. He wears the expression of tranquility and calmness. This farce only stays up in the presence of nobles, and goes down when with family and trusted friends.
  
  
• Strategic: Neil keeps a constant eye for strategy. In combat he is always looking for the upper hand: weaknesses in the formation of soldiers, unorganized tactics, or unskilled tacticians and commanders. In the eye of the public, he chats up the nearest person of interesting stature.
  
  
• Competitive: Growing up the third child, Neil was always competing to prove himself equal to accompany them in their adventures. These competitions happen often, and not just with his siblings. He competes to win, and wouldn’t restrain himself for any good reason.

Likes

• The Sea: A calming factor in life. The rhythm of the waves relieves him of all stress. Freedom is found in the form of the sea.
  
  
• Alcohol: To be more precise, rum and ale. This alcoholic beverages are the lifeline of a Black party; however, Neil avoids the consumption of the mind fogging drinks while seaside and enforces the motto upon his sailors as well.
  
  
• Adventure: Neil is always venturing off on some false notion of adventure. Whether it be possible Sea Serpent sightings or a dangerous pirate raging along shorelines.It is common for him to leave home without saying a word.
  
  
• Swordplay: Neil grew a habit of practicing his swordplay since an early age. Nowhere near a master, but he is proficient after dedicated years of training.

Dislikes

• The Cold: Freezing waters and forming ice are ill omens for sailing. If one were to fall overboard into the water in these temperatures, the sea would claim them. The cold chills to the bones. Neil has grown resentful of the cold ever since moving to Rogdland.
  
  
• His Own Imperfections: Neil is more than aware of his own weaknesses, which irritates him greatly. He sees this as a constant need to improve.
  
  
• Cowards: People who refuse to fight to defend the Emperor’s lands are deemed cowards in Neil’s eyes. He sees nothing greater than serving the Emperor in the ways defeating all who oppose his rule.
  
  
• Ignorant Individuals: People who are completely unaware of what is happening around them are viewed slow and indecisively to Neil. One must be completely aware of what is happening around them to perform at peak proficiency.

Abilities and Disabilities


Strengths

• Swimming: Throughout Neil’s time, Neil has spent more than half of his life in the sea. Unlike his brothers though, he prefers to remain in the water instead of keeping his feet on a boat. An excellent swimmer, his arms and legs are well toned from long tireless swims. After practicing technique, Neil has learned how to reduce water resistance increasing his speed. He is comfortable on his own feet, which transfers into other everyday activities.
  
  
• Optimistic: Even against seemingly impossible odds, Neil always retains an cheerful air around him. This positive attitude can shift onto others, making a lousy situation seem better.
  
  
• Tactical: Neil was schooled in the concept of battle and strategies. He thinks ahead the outcomes, good and bad, of plans and decisions.

Weaknesses

• Lean Frame: Neil has a leaner frame that doesn’t fair well against larger and more brutish opponents. He appears less than intimidating and can be easily overwhelmed by the strength factor alone.
• Impulsive: As most Blacks, Neil usually jumps head first into situations without thinking about the consequences that may follow. He much prefers this simpler way of leaving not having to overthink anything. He has dived off the deep end into danger time and again, in the literal sense and figurative.
  
  
• Low Self Image: When Neil was a child, he constantly viewed his oldest brother as the ideal person. Neil strived to become more like his brother, growing up in the shadow of being the third born son. Though Neil has grown out of this mind set, he still believes himself to flawed.
  
  
• Short Reach: Neil doesn’t have a long sword reach, which he is forced to compensate with getting closer to the opponent. This tends to usually get him into trouble as if the opponent was larger they could easily out size him.

Combat Styles

• Neil’s main combat style is a parry and strike. His nimble body helps him dodge heavy strikes. He parries either with his cutlass or buckler. When deflected he takes a quick strike to the opponent. If his opponent is larger than him, he would try to tire him out till he can deliver a decisive blow. This style is prefered in noble duels.

Weapons of Choice

• Swordfish: A sturdy cutlass made of tempered steel. A iron hilt and solid cup guard make up the bottom. Neil is quite proficient with this and other swords from training in swordsmanship, but prefers the use of cutlasses over other swords.
  
  
• Serpent’s Net: Neil’s buckler, a small, lightweight, and versatile shield, is his prefered use of defense in combat. His instinctive use of the buckler helps him deflect strikes and bind the assailant’s sword to their chest and making it difficult to attack. It also has a second use as a “metal fist” which can stumble the victim.
  
  
• House Black Dagger: The dagger is mostly used in situations when Neil is separated from his cutlass. The dagger’s hilt is used to catch the strikes of the blade. This however is only useful against other small swords or knives.

Life Story

Neil was born on the summer of 276 AC in Narlas, Dragenthal to Daniel and Angela Black. Being born several years after his other two brothers, he was viewed as too young to follow them on their adventures. A year after his birth, his sister Jocelyn was born as well. Nothing of much note happened during his birth.


Being born of noble blood, Neil was afforded some of the best education. He was particularly taken with military tactics and the history of Regalia. He was given an military education that focused on naval tactics. From here, Neil learned ship placement and ship maneuvering, the different classes of ships, and how to devise tactics. It was during this time that Neil started to learn of land tactics, which was uncommon among his sea-faring family.


Life changed when The Chrysant War emerged. Travis, Chris, and the other older males of the family joined the Regalian forces to fight the Naylar. Neil was livid when he heard he couldn’t go. His father wanted him to continue his studies, so he did. Whenever he wasn’t studying, he was in the water. It wasn’t on boats though. He swimmed for hours on time. When the war ended, he was permitted to join the Navy. Though most of the conflict was over, Neil eagerly joined hoping to meet eager rebels who still wanted to put up a fight.


His term went by without any action of note. It was through this time Neil received hands on experience with commanding a ship. After his term came to an end, Neil’s young sense of adventure took hold. Neil quest was for a Sea Serpent unlike his brother’s for Ogres. His own brother, Phillip, was traversing the Archipelago. This search went on for the better part of a year before the Narlas Crisis. His searches weren't successful in searching for a Sea Serpent. The tensions between the Reds and the other neighboring nobles didn’t surprise him, but the execution of the family patriarch Travis came to the surprise to everyone. When news reached him, the family was already sent away to the northern extents of Rogdland. Neil returned to his family. Chris arrived in Regalia acting as the new family head. Phillip returned to his adventuring. It was left to him to help govern the land and watch over his sister. His father did most of the governing. Neil hated every second of living in Rogdland. The water was freezing, making it unbearable to swim in. Everywhere was cold. Though he stayed through it waiting for the opportune moment to leave the icy tundra that was now his home.


With the beginning of the Qadir War, Regalia was invaded shortly after the Rim Islands. Both of his brothers were trapped with Neil and Jocelyn waiting in Rogdland with news of what was happening. When news of Regalia being freed came after long months of waiting, Neil and Jocelyn sailed to greet their siblings in the holy city. Life for the family changed when Christopher renounced all titles he had. House Black was going in a downward spiral fast, and Neil was doing everything in his power to stop it.
