In reality, he does truly wish for the surety and comfort of a faith, but has never found it in himself to truly dedicate anything to a higher power in this way. That said, he has been known to, on occasion, mutter a prayer to Ulley or Aish-eia, and he half-knows a few hymns which he can occasionally hum around a cigar, when he is feeling particularly pious. LIFE STORY Born as Olandriel to Doralle and Savallis Galdorenn, a Teledden Altalar and Slizzar respectively, with two older siblings and two younger (each being a twin). His parents were both politically active and quite wealthy, leading opulent lifestyles which Olandriel took for granted, growing up in a grand family home in one of the marble cities of Tanaar Ivaëlle. His early life was a tumultuous one, spent in constant conflict with his father. A strict Teledden with conservative Altalar values, Doralle Galdorenn was harsh on each of the siblings, and made no exceptions for Olandriel. Each one of them took this treatment differently -- notably, his older brother more or less accepted his father's teaching, whilst Olandriel's response was much more so one of rebellion and recklessness. He routinely crept out of the house at night to meet up with his diverse cast of friends (many of whom were the children of Suvial diplomats or retired Finullen marshals), who would cause trouble about town or loiter in the nearby graveyard. His father attempted to put an end to this on several occasions, but no punishment seemed to be sufficient, as Olandriel simply became better and better at not getting caught. His mother, Savallis, would take an outwardly stony position as a parent, but in private, she quietly encouraged and enabled Olandriel's risk-taking lifestyle. She never alluded to his heritage, but she did sneak him money or, on occasion, distract his father when the young Slizzar arrived home at just the wrong time. His racial awakening, at age 18, was extraordinarily messy for Olandriel. Following the quiet realisation of his elder brother, who was keen to imagine that it had never happened, it was a toss-up between Olandriel and his quieter twin sister. Tensions had risen in the lead-up to this event, as Olandriel became more and more dismissive of his responsibilities (with the revelation of his brother's true heritage, his father became all the more cruel) -- such that when, of the two of them, Olandriel was revealed as the Slizzar, that tension boiled over and completely overturned his life. When confronted by his father, Olandriel threatened him with his newly-emerged abilities (the first time he had truly breached Doralle's iron-clad stoicism) and fled home the subsequent night. From there he travelled widely and aimlessly, bringing a few of his old friends with him, and got into all sorts of mischief. He seduced a wealthy merchant in Daenshore to steal and sell his rings, he faked papers and impersonated a guard captain to seize twenty-six bottles of luxury wine in Girobalda, he used his supernatural powers of persuasion to gain access to an exclusive gentleman's club in Dragenthal, and spent much of his money along the way on exceedingly vibrant, needlessly opulent clothing, exotic alcohol, and an inordinate number of siggs. Abandoning his roots and signifying a fresh start, he took the name Xylander Lao, severing ties to his family and making his origins all the more ambiguous to those he later met, breeding a mysticism that appealed to his vanity. He had no plan, and never intended to make one. His most recent escapade took him all the way from the Sundial Isles through Daen and Corontium to the Crown Isle and Regalia, tagging along with a circus for a time, and followed for a short stretch by a community of revellers he had gathered in his travels. The whole adventure was by no means monetarily worthwhile.
