When in the process of creating a character, there's a lot to think about.
Detail, personality, detail, likes and dislikes, DETAIL.

However memorable your character may be because of all that work you put into how they are, you have to make sure that people will know who they are, and remember their name!

    4bb14db96a35df8ead3818e4c9b33998.png

    Gender based names
Sometimes names are strictly female, or male, like Rebecca or Nathan.
    On
occasion, names can go either way, like Sydney or Ryan.
Here are a few small lists of common names for each category.
    • Female: Sophie, Elena, Hannah, Janine, Kate, Rebecca, Macy, etc.
    • Male: John, Brian, Mark, Tyler, Austin, Thomas, Peter, Joshua, etc.
    • Unisex: Addison, Ashton, Alex, Bailey, Carson, Casey, Chris, Drew, Glenn, Hayden, Jade, Jesse, Jamie, Sam, Max, Syd, Ryan, etc.

Sometimes, names fit a certain age group much better than others.
Some have a very strong sound to it, making it more fitting for an adult, others have a lighter tone, in turn making it more fitting for a younger character.

    • Names that tend to be given to older Characters
      • Female: Diane, Colleen, Charlotte, Emilia, Nicole, etc
      • Male: Charles, Damion, Michael, Richard, Samuel.
    • Names that tend to be given to younger Characters
      • Male: Collin, Evan, John, Dylan, Noah, etc.
      • Female: Chloe, Gina, Mae, Coralie, Emma, Zoey, etc.

    301bea843ec6db11104adcb126ec6bea.png

When naming your character, their heritage needs to reflect in more than just their habits or likes/dislikes.
A character that is Chi'en-Ji or Maiar shouldn't have a name that is overly similar to that of a Qadir, or Ailor.
There can be specific exceptions; like adoption at a young age and being given a name of a different origin.

    Here's a little cheat sheet!

Surnames are just as important as first names!
Therefore, require just as much thought when creating them!
Try to avoid throwing together two nouns, or borrowing from popular names you see in either video games or books. It is noticed when you do.

I mean... we're all nerds here...
Here are some tips for coming up with a creative surname:
    • Take into consideration the origin of your character, just like you did with their first name. Try looking into names that are less common as a first, for example:
      • Ceardian - Male - 18
        • Carson Abrams
      • Carson being the boy's first name is more commonly known in 'English cultured' areas as a first name. Where as 'Abrams' is not typically seen as a first name, though it bares resemblance to the name Abraham. This can be followed down a long list of names, Collin vs Collins, as a first name vs last name for example.
    • Try to avoid throwing random nouns together. As much as it's seen everywhere, try to be a little original and somewhat serious with your naming.
      • While Thorin Oakenshield is really an amazing character, 'Oakenshield' is similar to what is being referred to here.
    • If your character is self-named, there's less form and expectation. However, you have to keep in mind, is this really what your character would willingly name themselves?
Sometimes looking through ancestry.com or other old registries can help you find diamonds in the rough when it comes to surnames. I've linked some helpful sites down below in a later post so... Don't settle! The right name is out there, if you know where to look!

    9480d67942ea67e7b29aaf5e2d309839.png

Since you're already here, on the forums, reading this... I'll link the Character Creation section!
Take a look at some of the characters already being played, what their names are and how they reflect the personality. It may give you some inspiration as well as give you a heads up as to what names are already on the field!

Now, while it isn't a rule to not have the same name as another person's character, it is courteous to be different and not have five of the same name running around!

    Hi Everyone!

I was asked to update this with the current lore, but the idea remains the same!

Sometimes it's difficult to come up with the right name for a character, and originality is lacking.
That's okay though! Naming characters is hard, especially when there's so many running around already.
So-- here's a few tips, and a couple links to hopefully help out newcommers or even veterans looking for some inspiration!

I really hope this helped out!
    - Ann

    Fantasy Names Generator
This generator has multiple different sub generators. It ranges from Fantasy/Real name generators, as well as a generator for names of places.

    Behind the Name Generator
This will generate a name in one of many IRL cultures/languages as well as a few folktale or fantasy like names. The generator will also give you the meaning of the name given if clicked on.

    Rink Works Fantasy Name Generator
This generator will give you a chart of names. You can specify if you want a girly name, a longer name, one with more vowels than consonants, and even names with apostrophes.

    Surname Database
This isn't a generator, so much as a large database of names, primarily a list of surnames.
    (Meaning Last Names)

    Medieval Names Archive

This isn't a generator, but an archive of many medieval names. It also has a few sources to help out!

Fantastic tutorial! The DETAIL and depth you explore will, hopefully, aid many new RPers who are just delving into the often difficult task of naming their character! Thanks for the extensive naming guide! It really helped me!

Was the title of this post a reference to Romeo and Juliet? (Because that is immediately what I thought of)

    Ahah, no, not intentionally.
However, I see what you mean now that you
    mention it. I suppose that's neat C:

Err, I was under the impression that Tigrans have Egyptian names, rather than Elvish/Ithanian?
Also, Qadir includes any Middle Eastern culture, so that also extends the language to Kurdish, Turkish, Hebrew, etc.
If I do come across as that "one guy", my apologies, I just thought I'd let you know, ^-^

    Thanks.
Like I said before, this is based off what
I've looked into on the wiki, and personally seen in RP.
    I'll edit it though!

This shall be very helpful for newcomers to the server who are unsure on race-based names.
    Example:
    'Kitty The Tigran' etc.

Oh oh oh, I didn't see this in there, Dakkar usually have Hindi/Indian names, and they will either have no last name, or a last name pertaining to occupation or something similar

Since I've seen you've edited this. This is false of Dwarven names. Dwarven names either come from Old Scandinavian names (from the wiki) or similar, or using fantasy generators to get names like Skovae or Volkdas (you can find tons of these)
I generally advise people to not make surnames of dwarves like "Ironfist" or "Coalbeard" and instead go with something that isn't taking two words of the generic culture and smashing them together.

Hi— I am mass editing it. Please be patient as nearly everything to do with the massive lore is severely out dated and what is there is currently a place holder.

    Thank you!

I believe I've read the answer to this somewhere but I can't seem to recall where - how does one change the name displayed in-game for role playing?

If no one has gotten to you before this, you use the /nick command. So you would type /nick use [Insert your RP name here]

Glad I could make you laugh! I hope it remains useful for those who need it.

    However,

It’s going to be a rather big overhaul, especially with a few races up in the air! Thank you everyone for patience.
