Well.

Damn it.

You see, I've been on this server for a while now, for about three years going on all sorts of rping adventures and always thought to myself, "Wouldn't this be a great setting for an entire story?" I pondered that question for a while, daydreaming on how a plot could play out never really truly thinking of how the story would actually turn out. I even wrote a short story about it once, but it freaking sucks and no one should ever read it.

Then I started to write, and I used Regalia as a basic setting and continued the plot forward. I didn't follow Massivecraft lore exactly, as for Regalia is a rather different city in the story, but other than that it sticks to the world we play on in the server. I just used some older ideas then the rather new ones we have now. So I got invested in it, and actually got rather far, and then asked myself a question.

"Did I just make the biggest mistake of my life?"

I mean, a story could actually work, but in the end, it is the staff's world. Is it really a good to continue on with this story? I could take it into a lot of directions, if I were to finish it, it would still take a while. This is why I posted this thread in the first place, to see the communities standpoint on a story set in the world of Regalia, as well as the staff's opinions. If this were to ever become a thing, what would I have to go through to actually say, publish it or actually get it out to the public without messing around with someone else's creation?

So tell me what you think, as I have a feeling this is going to get a big response, luckily I didn't dig a ditch to big, as for I have no idea what to do now.

Funny enough, I've always thought that a book, or even an Adventure map series taking place in the Alorian universe would be absolutely amazing, but I've also thought it'd be a bad idea because 1. Admins getting mad at me for taking their creations, and 2. Too much work.

Personally the most I can say about Admins is that if you did ever make a book about it, make a clear dedication to the staff of Massivecraft, especially probably the Lore Writers. That's basically my only helpful idea.

I think it would be a great idea, but in all honesty when most people begin to write a book they make 10 pages then put it in a drawer and never touch it again, so if you can go through with it that would be great.

If you were to make a book, do a "Inspired" story. What do I mean thou may ask. Make a story that is way more different, but has it's similarities. But if that is still considered "stealing" try putting "Inspired by {this this and this." I tend to dream big so most things people think I have already thought of. But it is a great idea and I do agree with your concerns,

Somewhere along the pipeline you'd probably have to include MassiveCraft in some sort of publishing deal for example if you were to publish it on kindle and charge money for it. If you just take stuff from Aloria and publish it on your own, that would be plagiarism.

"Did I just make the biggest mistake of my life?"

Regardless of whether or not you publish it, creative writing is /never/ a mistake, certainly not the biggest mistake of your life. Even if you never publish it... fan fics are a thing, and they can enjoyable as well as build your capabilities as a writer. For example, the first stories I ever wrote took place in Middle-Earth, but I added my own ideas and 'twists' onto the world. Very similar to the story you are talking about. They rest in eternal slumber in some old notebook in my desk, and I'll never do anything with them again but I don't regret writing them, because they helped me grow as a writer.

As a person, as opposed to a staff member, I encourage you to write absolutely WHATEVER you feel inspired to write. Ultimately, you should take pleasure in the act of writing so if writing about a certain subject is fun for you, do it. Even if you can never publish it or show it to lots of people because of plagiarism. I'm obviously not encouraging you to subsequently attempt to publish this story without the consent or consultation of MassiveCraft, and frankly I am not in any position to weigh in on something like that, it's 'above my pay grade' so to speak. But if you enjoy writing this story, go for it. Worst Case scenario you can share it on the forums and the MassiveCraft community can check it out :)

Well, that's good. I'm sure everything will work out eventually, as I do feel rather committed to writing this.

Legally it's not plagiarism unless the MassiveCraft staff copyright the works & writings of the lore. Legally, he can just rip you off without paying you a nickel.

Since 2007, anything you write/publish on the internet is your copyright as long as you can prove that you were original author. MassiveCraft has a couple of copyright statements both on the website and wiki, so I assure you, it is quite covered., in the US specifically. It gets even more over the top in Australian law.

Ahh that's good then, it's nice to know that the server's dedicated staff won't just have their work ripped off and not credited.

As I voted in the poll depends on how you do this. Writing a novel would be hard because there is so much aspects of Aloria's world you'd have to focus on but along with that there is many ways you could do it. Post seperate novels for different things like short mini stories. For example a mini story on sewer life. Then one as the noble life ect. Only downfall is you wouldn't be able to make a character you could get attached to as each ministory features different characters but if you do it in the way you focus on a character(s) time and adventures in Regalia you could make a character. To sum it up there is many interesting things you could do with it and it'd be nice to see how it comes out. (A quick little note here. Tigran Tech adventure map = So much yes.)
