OOC Note: This will be a tad different than my usual stories. If you were here for funny shenanigans, then this isn't the right story for you.
I had stepped through the gates of the Regal Bastion as quickly as I could. The messenger had arrived at my house with a heave and a puff. I had barely been able to understand him. The message he carried had been a simple one, though. One I had looked forward to all my life. It was time for us to raid the slums. I began my run to the Regal Bastion, diving in and out and even in between the common mulling folk on the streets. I passed through the tavern square, a few drunks raising their mugs to me on my dash across the square.
I let out a yell to Bob, the gatesman, and he opened the gate for my arrival. I slipped through, just in time to hear the infighting.
"We must wait for Krupp's orders. Listen!"
A female voice cried. That was the one who had been closest to me.
"I ga' t'e righ', le's go!"
That was Vidarr. I knew it was him.
While the debate heated up, I went and got my armor on. I had been the last stop for the crier, apparently, so I was the last one ready. I fumbled around with putting every plate on, nervous and excited.
The others were crowding the exit as I moved to join them. Then a thought struck me (I know. I thought I was too dumb to think.). Maybe she had a point. Maybe we shouldn't go. I yearned to fight, but. I stayed back.
"Emilia. Bar the gate. Jam the lock system. If all goes south, swim."
She said. I knew her voice then. It was Calista.
"We should go and make sure they're okay, right? Right?"
My thoughts turned to how bloody it could get. That could have been me.
"No. Just, go do it, Emi."
With that, Calista waltzed through the gate. I did as she said, unsure of anything and everything. I dismissed Bob for duty. I jammed the mechanism with a ball used for training. I barred the gate from the inside, using a few discarded beams left for in case of emergency. It was locked up tightly. I stretched back, and waited. My view was perfect. With just the right yell, I could get them to hear me but not see me.
I waited for so long. The keep was so eerie without anyone around. It was dusty in some areas. I wanted to go and clean them, you know? I was still trying to figure this out myself. Why did I do it? Why did I do something that will probably get me executed?
I was unsure.
The time had finally come for me to change. The Nordmark came pounding down the bridge, a prisoner in hand. I stood there, at the little balcony. Once they realized they couldn't get in, a collective groan and yell in some language I didn't know happened. I began to make my demands.
"I want the safe return of my shield! I want to be- Killed with it!"
I screamed out to them. Vidarr promptly responded after a small group huddle.
"I'll mel' i' down infron' o' jou!"
My negotiations were failing. I decided on something. Something I could do. I could fake my own death.
Chink.
Something had landed right by the bricks. It pulled back, and hooked on. They were scaling the walls. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, right up the stairs. I made it to the roof, and shimmied my way around to the water side.
I stripped off my armor, as someone stomped around the corner. They followed me, I knew it. I unclasped the last piece, and dashed to the railing. I lifted one leg over it, and turned my head to my pursuer.
"Bye, Anton!"
I cried out, slipping my other leg over. I shut my eyes, and let my own weight take me into the water. Swimming can't be that hard, right? Lots of people learn how to swim pretty quickly. I think.
I heard one last thing from Anton, though. Something that could have made me stay.
"Emilia- Wha's wrong with ye'?!"
But. No reply from me. I was halfway down the tower, and was speeding up to my watery release, or even grave.
Splash.
I swam. I swam well. It was do or die. But it wasn't enough. Something snapped onto my leg, and dragged me back. I was dead in the water.
As I was pulled onto land, I let out a groan. I was caught. I was surrounded by Nordmark, my leg hanging from the jaw of a maiar.
"Fockin' Void…"
I don't remember much after that. I coughed and sputtered up water while someone helped me hobble to the prison.
I wish I hadn't been unsure. I don't want to return to war. It's frightening. The sounds, the screams, the bloody sights. I rested on the ground, no will to move. My leg had been bandaged at some point, but I was too crazed to know when.
I, Emilia Reyes, am broken now. The thought repeated in my head, sickeningly twisting my insides until I gave a dry sob. How could this happen?
