In the bowels of Greygate, a particular prisoner was taking her stay. Not making a sound, she was staring, dead silent, upwards at the ceiling as holy water rose around her. Like a bedtime story's villain, the child had the features of a stereotype. Her face was pale, even naturally so, and her black hair framed it so neatly, it was a mystery how it was done so gently despite her chained down her hands. Gleaming up barely in the dark gloom that lingered even in the noble cells, ruby eyes locked onto the nothingness above her as if staring straight up through five floors of stone to the night sky.
Haeddi's breath was slow as if she was trying to force herself to stay calm, despite the ache in her bones that shouldn't ever haunt a child her age. Her fingers fidgeted, digging into the bed covers as she fought the desperate urge to fight against the chains that wrapped her form down against the bed. Outside the cell, she could hear the soft snoring of her own that had gone against the usual rules to keep her company for the night until tomorrow.
Tomorrow.
Tomorrow was the last day. That's what the guard spoke softly into her ear as he brushed her hair, trying so incredibly hard to keep her calm as the young Harhold's friend and kin stared at her like something Other.
Tomorrow would be the day that she left these chains, the day she would finally be free to run away from the places that kept her locked away.
There would be no arms around her, keeping her in place.
There would be no bars encircling her form.
Would be no rope around her waist.
No chains.
How the child of six and ten craved such. How could she, the daughter of a great Duke of Vlissinghelm, be locked into such a situation. A criminal? But there was not even a bad bone that she knew of in her body, much less an inkling of sinful darkness in her soul.
Was it her desperation for attention that caused this situation? How Haeddi longed so greatly, like any girl of her age, to have the spotlight on themselves for just a moment- to be the apple of everyone's eye if it was even for just a second or two. Now the whole Peerage was watching. Now everyone was watching.
The idea of eyes on her brought a ghastly shudder, the cold chains brushing her skin as she did. Haeddi shut her ruby eyes and still saw red.
What was this red? Was it the blood that was spilled before her by the sanguine, or was it the blood that her family had brought forth to paint their banners with? The murmurs from those dark nights in the Vampire's presence haunted her being still. How he spoke of the flames licking around his kin, brought forth by her father's hand.
But she didn't dare to open her eyes. Instead, she laid there in the darkness, struggling so hard to keep silent as that holy vapor burned her frame from the outside-in. Not a single word escaped her silently screaming form, not even one as Haeddi wished desperately to not disturb the ones outside her cell. She wouldn't. She had brought them so much unnecessary pain already, it would be wrong to hurt their rare sleep since she had been spirited away into the night.
So, she thought of Tomorrow, and all the freedom it would bring. One could only hope this freedom would last. The teenager did not dream of a boy, nor tea, nor titles like all the others. Instead, she dreamed of the sun finally touching her face, and staying on it.
