The War Inside.

Johnathan sat on the bed In his cabin of the ship, eyes closed, but a restless look on his face. He exhaled, as he tried to sort through the jumbled thoughts in his mind... "Do the ends justify the means?..." "No, they do not," "why can't they?" Johnathan tried to make the voices in his head go quiet, but he could not, an old memory of something Nathaniel Bigge said popped I to his head. "You won't survive the world of politics with honor..." He paraphrased under his breath... The voices came back. "Yes you can,". "no you can't,". Finally, the Count stood up, slammed his fist against the wall, as he said in an audible voice "Be quiet!" He slumped down into a chair, and held up the necklace that a boy, no older than twelve gave him, the memories soon came. James was the last person in line to speak with the new count, as he approached Johnathan, who was sitting in his chair in Mountburg, he held up a handmade necklace.

"My father was a black Smith, be taught me a few things before he died.... Now I'm an orphan... My mother died in childbirth. I used the only money they left with me to make you this... I hope you like it m'lord..."

Johnathan took the necklace, and placed a large bag of gold in his hand, before telling his servants to get him a room in the castle.

"When I return, you will come with me to regalia, and serve as a steward, if I like you enough, maybe I will adopt you, only time will tell."

Johnathan left and boarded an Anglian frigate, it was two days later that a raven found the ship, and gave him a letter saying that the west wing of the castle caught aflame, the wooden interior was burnt out, and that James, the boy, died.

Johnathan was overcome with sadness at the memory, he wanted to adopt the boy. He stood up, walked towards the door, throwing on a coat, and left the cabin. he ripped the necklace off if his neck, and almost threw it overboard, before grunting, and shoving it in his pocket. He was in for a long, long, ride, and he knew the trouble would not end soon.
