The dusk that settled over the Elven Moors and the silence that came with it was interrupted by the rustling of armor as the men of the Viridian Order approached their target: The prison of Neenasari; the very same prison that scouts had reported to be housing prisoners of war from the Pro-Regalian side of the Dread Empire conflict. The party of six--consisting of the Viridian Knights Erwald Ravenstad, Louis Delmotte, Aldwyn Howlester, Auguste Ravenstad and Theodore Vandervelde--shadowed by the known and notorious Turall Bladesman and rogue, Elros of Turent, made their swift advancement to a position in the underbrush closest to the southwestern side of the structure. With their plan in mind, the Viridians steadied themselves ready for combat as Elros made his move. Covered by the night, the Bladesman used the foliage and brush to weave a way toward the prison, silently dodging the sight of the watchful Shenath guards atop the turrets of the fortification until he was hugged against the South wall. Elros could tell by the movement inside that the Viridians were outmatched, so the mission would have to be swift and silent as all possible.

Over the course of the next hour, the Turall Bladesman ducked and dived away from the watchful eye of the prison guards that stood stalwart upon the walls until stumbling upon a loose grate at the side of the Northern wall that was just malleable enough for him to squeeze inside. His objective was clear; to open a way for the Viridians to enter, cut down as many of the Kathar loyal soldiers there and free the Elven and Regalian prisoners of war inside. A quick surveying of the inside of the prison made it apparent that all of the major entrances to it were too guarded to open and thus, the Knights would have to use the same grate he used if they hoped to infiltrate. Leaving, the posse regrouped in the underbrush and Elros relayed the information he gathered, much to the displeasure of both the Ravenstad and Howlester Viridian Knights. Alas, they had an objective and they were going to meet it.

One by one, they used the same route Elros had gone down until all were inside of the prison walls. Erwald took point, waiting for an opportunity to strike. As a group of three prison guards walked by unbeknownst, both Erwald Ravenstad and Louis Delmotte sprung from cover and quickly dispatched both with their longswords; effectively alerting all surrounding prisoners and the remaining guards of their arrival. The prison bells rung out, signalling an attack to which both Aldwyn, Auguste and Theodore were quick to respond to. While all three fought back oncoming attackers, Elros went to work picking the locks of the nearby cells and releasing as many of the prisoners as he could. The entire compound erupted in war cries and yells as unarmed Regalians and Elven fighters alike joined the knights in repelling the oncoming Kathar Guards. Auguste, who was definitely out of his element given that the other knights were far more skilled in blade combat than him, took the opportunity to gather weapons from the fallen guards and arm as many of the escapees as there were weapons to do so. Unfortunately for him, the sheer number of Kathar present in Neenasari were soon overwhelming his brothers-in-arms and, despite attempting to defend himself, took a dagger to the back and a baton to the head, leaving him with a punctured lung and a concussion; dropping him to the floor. To add insult to injury, the rampaging and justifiably vengeance-thirsty prisoners, in their numbers, trampled over their saviour, resulting in a broken leg. One of the older prisoners dragged him away from the conflict and both escaped the prison without any Kathar entourage in tow.

Erwald, in an attempt to rally the Viridians, lifted his sword up high, yelling for Aldwyn and Louis to lead the Guards into a nearby corridor while himself, Theodore and Elros dealt with what remained, splitting the platoon of around fifty Shenath in two. Sadly for Erwald, Elros had other objectives; deciding to abandon both Knights mid-fight and escape into an adjoining stairway to reach the upper level cells where he used the keys of a fallen Kathar Warden release more captured soldiers. Erwald and Theodore, while skilled in their relevant combat proficiencies, just could not escape every attack and both suffered moderate injuries. When the last body in their corridor dropped to the ground lifeless, Erwald was left badly bruised from the batons that swiped at him and suffered cuts along his face and other various less armored parts of his body. Theodore was less lucky, having suffered from a gnarly stab wound to the shoulder and a bludgeoning to the head which left him also dazed and concussed.

Meanwhile, Louis and Aldwyn became overrun by the remainder of the Kathar forces, who by this time had resigned themselves to their loss. While both gave it their all, they were no match for the flurry of attacks that swang for them from their front. Aldwyn Howlester was the first to crumble after he had turned to watch Louis’s rear, the lower ligaments in his legs torn apart from the swipes of Kathar arming swords. To make matters worse, Louis could only watch on as his fellow blue blood was bludgeoned over and over again by a group of four Kathar armed with maces, which resulted in the Howlester coughing up blood from multiple broken ribs and a shattered ankle. The Delmotte, try as he might, cut down two of the Kathar before succumbing to his own beating which left him with a fractured shoulder, a nasty gash to the abdomen and a shattered left wrist. Luckily for both Knights, Elros’s objective had succeeded and the remaining prisoners overwhelmed what remained of the Kathar forces--which undoubtedly saved the Viridian’s lives.

The next hour was spent in a makeshift medical ward the prisoners quickly put together to nurse the Knights, all of which had fallen from some injury or another. They would live to fight another day, certainly, but even their wounds--despite being severe--didn’t hurt as badly as their pride from the fact that, in the corner of the room, Elros of Turent watched on unscatched, leaning against a wall, smirking. As dawn approached, so did a detachment of reinforcements from Fort Threlwar which saw the group return home, broken but not defeated. Neenasari had been liberated with 18 of the 30 Elven and Regalian Officers still breathing and about half the soldiers that had been imprisoned with them alive and well.

Ardige Viduggla read the report he was given after the fact. He internally swore with a wrinkle of displeasure on his face at the numbers. Half the prisoners dead...he shook it off, attempting to focus on the positives. The prison was now cleared out for the impending advance and the majority of the captured military officers had also been saved. He was also glad to hear that the corpse of poor Field General Edgar Altenburg, killed out of retribution for Harhold's vile barbarity, was now being returned to his family for a proper burial. Even though it was likely to be a Unionist affair, Ardige reminded himself with bitter amusement of the one positive his family now had: he was pre-prepared for burial, lacking a head, unable to become an Undead...at least, as far as Ardige knew, he was no expert in the plague that was the Undead.

Still, such an act was doubtless to attract the attention of the nearby city, Merkar'sarh...they would be ready and waiting now. He furrowed his brow, now looking over his own, humble, personal map of the region. He took a small standing wooden shield and knocked down the black, practically gnarled piece that represented the prison's forces. The one in the north remained...the occupied mining town. As he set the wooden piece back in with the cluster around Fort Threlwar, he wondered what group William had approved to go into that occupied territory. He gave a brief prayer to his Union for rains to blind the enemy and amusements to trick their senses until it was too late.
