Velencia Malvosin
The nights in Regalia had stretched their hours into the day, whisking away daylight into an evening's dark embrace as winter hastened its approach upon the sleeping city. Velencia sat curled upon the window sill, her knee pulled close to her chest while her free leg swung back and forth, hovering only a few inches from the ground.
She sighed and the warm breath that left her hit the cold window, spreading its warmth for a few brief seconds in a murky cloud. With her elbow settled upon her knee and her chin in the crook of it, she looked out into the city, the outside cold already reclaiming its reign over the window. Snow had begun its descent onto the city as Velencia drew the blanket closer around her, her bandaged fingers gripping into the material as she sat in the window of the study.
Her eyes focused on the snow that had began piling up outside before they focused instead on her reflection in the dim candle light. She noticed how her hair glowed in the light, a halo encircling her head like an angel. She scoffed. She knew better, she was no angel. She had done more than her share of wrongs to last her a life time.
Ignoring these faults, she refocused on the reflection in the glass, thoughts of criticism and disgust running through her mind at what she saw.
Her eyes drifted down the reflection of the stranger before her, though she knew that it was in fact her own. Bright eyes of deep blue met her, each movement identical to her own as she shifted in place, the blanket falling slightly and exposing her shoulders that met the bitter night air. Goosebumps rose and the girl in the window frowned, turning away to glance down at the prickling skin. To ensure its reality, a shiver ran through her spine tingling any and every nerve in her body.
She felt cold, a feeling she had long assumed left her years ago. Raising an icy hand to her heart, she pressed it to her as if checking to verify that she was indeed still alive. As her hand pulled away, something within her shifted and went with it, a gasp following soon after.
The hardened heart in which she had locked away years ago under countless layers of distrust and frigid exclusion had finally managed to make a crack in its shell. It beat barely, a spark of warmth beginning to grow in the chink of its armor. The very thought of it terrified her and yet, an invisible force tugged on the corner of her lip, pulling it to the sky as she smiled in the midst of unknowing fear.
Velencia turned again to the girl in the window, her eyes drawn to the goosebumps on her shoulders as the smile took over her face, a real, genuine smile. A laugh leapt from her throat and she leaned forward to rest her forehead against the girl's. With closed eyes, the two strangers were suddenly one once again and the cutting bite of winter was no match for the small wisp of a flame that resided in Velencia's chest. It slowly spread its tendrils further throughout her as her breath fanned against the window, the blanket of the night's heartless cold eventually overcoming it.
