As if a little candle in a dark ocean, a purple light flickered into existence in complete blackness. With each pulse the flickering became brighter, until Draconic runes formed underneath, lines tracing stonework that had not been tread upon for hundreds of years. The air warped and then all of a sudden: a thunderous strike resounded through the darkness that indicated large hollowness. Gwyneth, Arahael, and Coren had come through the Leylines from Junction Central, the Regalian Isle, all the way to Junction West, supposedly deep under the megneous volcanos of Guldar and on the very far western edge of the known world. Junction West had not been visited in so long that a thick layer of ash and chalk dust blanketed the floor, the stoned which were otherwise made out of beautiful black marble with thin lines of red and orange streaking through it. As Gwyneth tried to make sense of the darkness, a set of red eyes lit up in the darkness beyond.

Gwyneth instinctively cast her Magic, creating a constant undulating bolt of lightning in her hand that cast light over the grand hall they had arrived in, only to reveal the two red eyes belonged to a small diminutive leystone construct, made out of the same black marble that the floor was made out of. It scurried off, leaving a trail of dust behind it before disappearing into the dark corridors. The place they had landed was absolutely massive, far larger than even the Regalian Temple of the All-Beacon, and taller even than the Imperial Cathedral. The light from Gwyneth’s spell was not even enough to light up the ceiling of the room they were in, leaving them to only guess how high it really went. As Coren stepped forward with intent to explore, his footstep resonated red lines of light that sped forward, lighting up all kinds of structures around them, walls and floors with energy as if someone had suddenly flipped on the switch and the lights came on.

The long gallery was filled with gargantuan impressionist statues of Dragons, geometric and square-like yet with distinct Dragonheads and watchful eyes. The three walked silently through the grand hall for what felt like an hour, before they arrived at a central dais, surrounded by a boiling moat of magma, connected and draining into caves beyond. The three reached up to the activation pedestal, the only thing that looked familiar to the ruins in Regalia, and tried to summon the Soulcore, which is when everything went wrong.

The Soulcore ejected from the pedestal, far more alert and at the ready than the ones in Regalia ever did. It did not even speak, producing instead metallic buzzing noises that sounded like syllables but neither could understand. Before long, it scanned all three of them, Gwyneth first with its eye that cast red light onto her that felt both uneasy and warm at the same time. Then Arahael, without incident. Then, as it scanned Coren, its mechanical body froze in place, producing a single loud buzzing noise, followed with the red lights in the room rapidly flashing. Gwyneth already suspected something was about to go horribly wrong, and started calling upon the leylines to pull them out, but she was not able to cast her spell in time for the Junction’s Guardian to appear.

From a hole in the wall rolled a massive metal-black-marble construct, unfurling on the floor near them and easily being as large as several Regalian houses, it appeared like an oversized armadillo with six legs, its head instead replaced with a large red glowing orb which turned to Coren, casting him in intense red light. The machine produced more buzzing noises before the light from its red glowing orb thinned into a sharp line aimed at Coren. His attempt to get away from the machine with a dash came too late as the orb fired a stream of super-heated light energy at Coren, incinerating his right leg and disintegrating his flesh. Coren dropped to the floor in an agonizing scream, having been off-balanced by only having one leg left. He reached out an arm to Gwyneth who was panicking with her spell, only seconds passing before the red orb again fired at Coren, this time incinerating his left arm from the shoulder up as he was holding it out to Gwyneth.

With one final scream, Gwyneth finished her spell, porting both herself and Coren back to Regalia, moments before the guardian aimed its red orb at Coren’s head for a coup de grace. Confused at where they went, the strobing lights ceased and the machine crawled back to the hole from which it came, the whole installation returning to complete darkness as it was before.

((Maim applied to Coren, his entire left arm and right leg were blasted off and incinerated)).
