Star Bright, star light, every star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might,
On every star I see tonight,
Marie gave the man a firm shake. After her unique form of sass had driven her last customer away, she began to close up the bar for the night. An old poem had been ringing in her ears- It was purely childish. Stars don't grant wishes. She's had plenty of experience, where time and time again, her desires went unfulfilled.
Except, though, when it was purely by chance.
Marie shut her eyes, giving an easy sigh. Instead of leaving, she decided to sit behind the counter and nurse a mug of rum. All those years ago, all the changes- And I have yet to fulfill my promise to Juan. Huh.
Turning to her side, she allowed herself to be wrapped up in the memory.
It had been a long days work. The sun beat down heavily on the chained individuals, and when the sun settled for its rest, so did many slaves. Marie, young and prominently so, chose a different path. She climbed up a tree, feeling for the best branches to grab. This tree also shielded her from the slave master and his whips. A week prior, he had set out to scare Marie into obedience.
Marie was generally unpleased with that. The bold girl has definitely seen worse in her days. Another Slave stepped in upon seeing a man screaming at a child, grabbing him and pulling Marie off.
This tree was no secret. There were few trees, and many were too frail to climb like Marie had. The one eyed girl looked up, scanning her eye across the sky.
She started off quietly enough, silently panning her gaze and praying inside her head.
"Star bright, Star light," She mumbled.
"Every star I see tonight," She croaked.
"I wish I may," She begged.
"I wish I might," She demanded.
"Every star I see tonight!" She called out to the divine cosmos, and in genuine child naivety, she looked for a sign.
And, in true Marie fashion, she let out a cry of anguish.
It was unfair! Why did she have to work like this? Why did she have to be born like this? A dirty, unpure slave, who should know their place in the world?
A hand grabbed at her mouth, covering it and stopping her shrieks.
"People are sleeping, little elf. Is something troubling you?" The husky voice questioned. He slowly removed his hand, and Marie turned around. To her dismay, it was a fellow slave. Someone who was just as helpless as she.
"They said the stars could grant wishes. I wish to be free," She commanded, the brat firm in her decision.
"Are you sure?" He pondered, cradling a leaf in his hand. "Your mother would miss you. Who would label the crates?"
Marie gave no thought to them before. Her mother was lovely. This man was lovely. She knew many, many slaves who were so lovely who shouldn't live like this. Suddenly, an idea came to her.
"I can free them all. I promise I will."
With that, a friendship blossomed. They worked together, they talked together, and most importantly, they schemed together.
With a subtle shake of her head, the buzzed Marie waved off the rest of the story. It was her head, her thoughts after all.
"Star bright," She whispered.
"Star light," She hummed.
"Every star I see tonight," She commanded.
"I wish I may, I wish I might," She cried.
"See you all safe at night," She promised.
