Core Concept
A Kathar refugee escaping the Dread Empire with nothing left to lose. After tasting other lifestyles outside the brutality of Kathar culture, she clings to this shred of hope for a better life, while also running from authorities who she fears will ship her back to where she came from. Facing waves of racism, discrimination, and isolation, she struggles to assimilate into Regalian society and follow what is morally acceptable and what is not. Her story is about building something for one's self from nothing, accepting cultural hybridity, and fighting against all odds to survive.

Throughout her journey, she is likely to shift towards Cult of Reason ideologies, grow her belief in the Persevering Gods Tanthor and Dari of Unionism, and approach her pursuit for power through science, technology, and logic over magical evolution.

Appearance Information
At this time, she avoids presenting as a Kathar at all costs, as she is afraid of being found out as a refugee. She uses magic to shapeshift into other races that she perceives are of 'privileged standing' in Regalia. This constant magic use tires her extensively, causing her appearance to be unrefined (e.g. forgetting to make her ears round instead of pointy when shapeshifting into an Ailor). It also requires immense study of different cultures, behaviours, and anatomies - which she has only been able to learn through time and experience.

  • Fleeing the vampire purges in Anglia, Danique, a meticulous bog witch vampire, disembarks in Regalia to pursue her alchemical research in the bowels of the sewers, undisturbed. Her sanguine curse corrupts her devotion to Unionism and moral boundaries. Her loyalty to the Kade family remains unmoving.

Backstory/Plothooks
  • Bullying & One Big Anglian Family. She was born and raised in the Anglian wheat fields amongst many children. She was bullied because her laughs sounded like pig snorts. This made her grow to be reclusive, independent, and quiet. Her parents, though loving, had too many kids to devote time to her situation and largely told her to "avoid it."
  • Stables, Archery, & Unionist Intervention. Field labour bored her because it was repetitive and she was surrounded by bullies. Animals were non-judgemental and didn't call her names. She became a stable girl who took care of farm animals because she spent most days there. She trained horses and played with bows and arrows. She almost shot a boy named Tom, her biggest bully. Thankfully, the intervention of a Unionist priest stopped her from becoming a criminal youth.
  • Pride, Plants, & the Kades. She learned a great deal about plants from the Unionist priest who doubled as a healer, her mentor, and her role model. Therefore, it became her hobby and the one thing she felt proud of despite her insecurities. This priest was also a Kade fanatic, which made Danique a natural Kade loyalist.
  • Vampirism & Regalia. Unfortunately, she was lured into the woods by a vampire who enticed her with botanical knowledge and later left her near-dead in a bog. The Unionist priest found her after the village declared her missing and knew instantly the infection risk. While the priest isolated, nursed, and counselled her to agree to a curing ritual over several weeks, it was unsuccessful. The entire village knew what had happened and ostracized her for it. Their whispers and undisguised hatred were unavoidable and hindered any progress the priest had made. Her parents didn't know whether to look at their daughter with remorse or grief; Danique hated both expressions. In one foul spat with Tom, between the bars of her 'compassionate' holding cell and what little light sliced through it, her powers awakened. One instant she was in a cell, and the next she was a monstrous blood bat, squeezing Tom's chest in the grip of her taloned feet. She relished in his fear, in his wriggling agony, and his pleas for mercy. Just as she was about to plunge her teeth into his throat, she was stopped by the horrified look on the priest's face. She couldn't understand it. Tom had wronged her. Tom deserved to suffer. A lasso that glowed blinding white latched around her foot and burned like molten iron. She was yanked away by the priest's God powers and dragged aside. Her instincts told her to run. She didn't want to die. She had to find somewhere safe. Safety was a boat away from Anglia - away from home. After untangling herself, she fled to the woods, to the first ship she could board and landed herself in Regalia.
  • The Present. Years after settling in the capital, she now treats her early vampiric days as her "trial" to prove she was "worthy" of the "liberating gifts." She believes Unionist priests to be misguided in curing vampires and believes its faithful should include them instead. She believes the Kades have somehow "blessed" her with these vampiric gifts due to her narcissistic vampiric mentality and that she owes service to the Empire in return. She has not written to her family or the priest from home since. Deep down, she hopes they will forgive her.
