Good people of Regalia, it is this humble weaver's great joy to offer her fiber arts services!
Sivrid Kensley is proud to offer her services as a fiber artist to any who seek the warmth of artisan crafted goods. And if you've been looking for a way to impress your fancy friends, she's got three words for you:
Fine. Art. Tapestries.
What's so great about a tapestry?
While day to day wares are listed for sale below, Fine Art Tapestries are the main draw of this small operation. So, why would anyone want one?
- Tapestries can be woven to any level of detail specified, and are a traditional method to preserve proud moments in history, to honor deities, to record family trees, or to pay homage to a person or event.
- A tapestry is similar to a painting. However, given the many marble and stone buildings of Regalia, especially noble estates and castles, tapestries serve to dampen noise and regulate the temperature of a building. They are also sometimes considered more permanent, hardy, and easy to move.
- A genuinely fine gift. If you must cart your gift a long distance, a tapestry is a practical thing to ship. But even to give within the city, a tapestry is only made by those with the skill and patience to weave every individual strand of colored fiber into its proper place, and is entirely customizable to the receiver. If you need to curry favor with an affluent family, a custom tapestry is never an unwelcomed gift.
- Enhanced with mystic beauty. Mrs. Kensley is uniquely able to imbue any tapestry with a radiant effect that can allow for subtle motion and non-typical effects to happen within the tapestry under certain conditions. This is not the result of an aberrant magical effect. See details below.
- Woven fabrics that can be ordered by garment workers within the city, dyed and patterned to specification.
- Soft goods such as rugs, blankets, curtains, and linens.
- Raw materials such as wool in any stage (raw, carded, spun, dyed).
- Yarn and other such knitting materials, dyed to specification.
- Wool goods such as simple tunics and peasant skirts (excellent for keeping one dry during the winter).
- Scarves, hats, socks, and other such knitted, crocheted, and nalbinding goods.
Pricing varies from item to item. Inquire with Sivrid about your needs.
Options for ordering a Tapestry:
Currently, Sivrid has no dedicated shop for her wares. However, she can often be found in the Gauntlet Tavern, where you can leave a note (PM me or reply to this thread!) and she will get back to you in the most convenient way possible.
Size: Ranges from small (placemat) to large (wall hanging).
Motif: Depictions of any person, thing, event, or place can be made.
Detail level: Do you want a sigil with a border, or an entire depicted scene, like a painting?
Time constraint: Weaving ain't fast. A quick turnaround means a steeper price.
Mystical Effect: Sivrid is a ritualist who is able to add a subtle effect to her pieces. She can imbue a single color within a tapestry to be reactive to an element of its same color. For example: fire on the tapestry can flicker if a fire is lit nearby, the stars and moon can glimmer in moonlight, the sky can brighten in the presence of wind from an open window. This is a non-magical ability, created by devotion to her gods, and not by aberrancy.
Pricing of Tapestries in Medieval Terms:
Given that we, as role-playing, modern human beings, are not familiar with the value of tapestries as both art and a homegood, I've made up a general little list to explain their value.
A generally decent tapestry which bears a sigil and a family name could be purchased for roughly two months of a laborer's wages. Consider this to be about the price of a cow. A wonderful gift for a servant to save up for, for their master.
A very good tapestry which takes several weeks to create and depicts a scene like a painting could range between one to two year's of a laborer's wages. Consider this to be around a dozen cows, or more. A serviceable gift as dowry, or to offer good will towards a neighboring aristocrat.
A tapestry which takes several months to complete, and depicts a story with highly detailed scenes and recurring motifs, imbued with radiant effects, which can be read like a picture-book and hangs over a castle wall, would take about nine years of laborer's wages to afford (or if we're still thinking of cows, about fifty). This is something a wealthy person might purchase for bragging rights, or that one ruling nobleman could gift to another after a serious event.
Tapestries can be ordered to suit varying needs and to fit varying budgets. This is all IG and role play monies, so I offer this information purely as a basis for how to think about these items. I'll start charging regals when I actually feel like drawing.
OOC Note:
I am a fiber artist IRL and I am fascinated with wool and its role in history. Please, do not hesitate to ask me any questions about fiber art! I love helping people with crochet projects. I also needle felt, weave, needlepoint, and spin and dye yarn. So is this a self insert? Yes. Yes it is. And I'll die on this hill of educating the medieval role playing public about wool and other spun fibers! (I even used my own projects in the banners for this thread <3)
