As a Massivecraft "Jack of all Trades", I have seen and taken part in both sides of the server, the Roleplay and the PvP sides. It is from this that I must pose this question, should we bring back races? For those that forgot or just don't know, Races were a key part of Roleplay and PvP in Masssivecraft for a long time. There were 13 races in the plugin, with several others not supported by the plug-in but often times encountered in Roleplay. The plug-in made it easy to check what race people were, just type /show [player name] and their race was shown in the data. However, recently this has changed. Races have been completely removed in favor of MassiveTraits, a plugin which allows for the user to change key traits affecting their gameplay with ease. This proved to benefit PvPers, however Roleplayers have difficulty discerning the race of those they roleplay with. In addition, you are posed with the issue of players roleplaying as, say Maiar but walking around for hours in the streets of Regalia not once setting foot, or if you will, "Fin" in water.
Feel free to comment and pose your thoughts on this subject, I hope to hear your insights on this matter!!!

Role players can have up to five approved characters at once. The race plugin conflicted greatly with this, since most role players who hold several characters like to be able to freely switch characters, making the race plugin often disregarded by role players.

I believe races should be brought back, even in PvP races were better. You had to be careful and choose your race wisely, it made PvP better in my opinion. For role play it benefited a lot so then people can walk into a building as a short dwarf and ask other people like elves, questions about height. Sure dwarves will always be shorter but it is a fun topic. I say races returned and traits removed!

If I remember correctly, what race you had with the race plugin had nothing to do with what race you role played as. It was a pure PvP advantage.

I prefer traits, at least for roleplay. For example, if you played as a blind person, you could use the blindness trait. If your character had a leg that never healed quite right, you could have the slowness trait. For me it brings a lot more customization into roleplay. It's too bad that when a lot of people are roleplaying, they pick traits that totally conflict with their character. If you're OOC or PvPing or something I have no problem with it, but when your character is a giant, 350 pound Orc jumping from roof to roof with the speed and jump perks, or a Maiar that never actually goes in the water, it annoys me quite a bit.

When the hell does anyone ever do /seen to look at which race someone is RPing? 99% of the time, I'd literally see someone roleplaying a human/elf/Dorf and their listed race was "Undead." Even Obscurekoala and Luthein did that. Pretty sure they weren't undead either, Guards weren't trying to brutally execute them.

As for the maiar point. To be brutally honest, while it would be "Realistic" to have said maiar have their food drop due to lack of water, still, it's like a vampire attacking someone and the person wastes time bitching and moaning in OOC and basically having the entire night, which you carefully planned, waste away because someone wanted to waste your time and be all like "((Oh, day now. Stop attacking me. YOU'RE BREAKING LORREEEEE!!))". Same point here, it's just an inconvenience when time in RP does not pass the same as say, OOC with day/night cycles and/or food/skin dryness cycles.

And, like Kirby said, Traits allows you to get some affects you /just can't/ get with races. Convenience to keep the RP going, manners to keep it realistic in ways that matter and ways to prevent realism that is undesireable or pointless due to a lack of logic on nobody's fault, really.

...Damn I type way too much.

There should be recommended "Race Packages" that give certain traits depending on your race.
You would still have the option to customise traits, and ignore these packages completely...

They don't even need to be IG. They could be on the forums, like the recommended race height and stuff like that.

I don't really see a point in bringing back the races plugin. In my opinion it was very limited on what you could do, and allowed for nearly zero creativity. Look at Vampires (Which, yes, I know, are not a race.), with the new bloodlines being created, there are too many variants for solely the old vampire plugin to work. Some vampires don't take damage in the sun, making the ability to adjust that while keeping the jump boost and speed boost makes the traits become a much better alternative to the races. With ousting the old negatives, old ones can be issued in and interchanged. Take the Kleinfolk and Q'urebo for example, while being exceptionally fast and having numerous abilities, with the races plugin they would have had to either imagine in RP, or carry around speed pots to generate the effect for them; a waste of materials and time. Bringing races back makes little sense, seeing as the traits can do all the races did, with so much more.

As for the PVP aspect, I am not much of a PVPer, and this is just what I view from my friends who do PVP. The traits plugin allows people to excel in some categories, like axes, while maybe being weak to swords. This, in my opinion, evens out the PVP side of things very easily depending on how it is done. Races limited what you could do and what your strengths were, while traits allow customized builds and a constant drive to find a 'perfect build' to outwit your opponents. It makes it rather something of strategy, rather than just taking a buff against damage or taking one to deal more.

Go to the bottom of this page, it has racial reccomendations, they also have a few for vampires on the wiki: http://www.massivecraft.com/massivetraits#the-traits

I do believe races should stay gone, as they were removed to replace it with better traits. An elf for example, could be proficient in axes, but with races its only more damage with bow. If a maiar is walking around everywhere, you can just ignore him or her to avoid bad roleplay

I only read the title and original post and wanted to say...

Races and traits both give PvP advantages, but (I believe) are meant to add to rp as well. It was quite annoying waiting 3 days to change your race when you are planning to roleplay. I honestly like that races were removed and a vast selection of traits were added -- for both PvP and Rp purposes. Traits add wonderful PvP aspects and races can still be portrayed through roleplay.

With all that being said I believe that the system we have now is good, not flawless but still really good. I believe races should stay gone and that the new BackStory plugin could easily solve some of this aswell.

Like some have said, the races plugin had very little to do with roleplay. I always went with human before just so I could vampire myself at times. Unless they were really dramatic races, like Maiar, they had little effect in Regalia. Even if it breaks compliance a little for an Orc to spring from roof to roof, those can be considered OOC (and likely, they are).

Someone also mentioned Maiar cycles -- that is, them needing to water themselves. Maiar can go up to a day without water. The day/night cycles IG are... Not as strict as it may seem. For vampires it's a bit awkward because day and night can change so suddenly, but for something like Maiars, it can be determined that a Maiar can go 1 irl day without drying out.

In other words, I'm pro-traits. XD

Personally, im a HUGE fan of the traits because I don't have to stay in the water ALL THE TIME as a Maiar. It used to be very annoying but I'd put up with it because I loved the race. I love being able to talk to people as a Maiar without having to make an ic excuse to go to the water in the middle of a conversation every few minutes.

There were almost only 2 races being used in regular PvP, undead because of the superior value of the buff, and dwarf for the extreme damage if you were confident with your axes, traits add a whole new level to PvP where you need to think about what your enemy is running, do you combine X trait with Y to get a better defense but worse offense etc.

Traits added some strategy to PvP, and not having to be locked for 3 days is really nice, I prefer traits above races.

Yes, I agree. Its pretty tough to RP as a maiar when other RP'ers typically don't stand around water sources. It made me feel left out whenever I went to Regalia. I try to keep a balance between in/out of water time while RP'ing though.
I like what traits did, for the most part (not that HarmSunlight though, thats more broken than what maiar had before).

I loved the races and believe that they should come back. I think their should be a way to mix races if you were mixed such as half chi'i and half elf or something like that.

But why? I don't really see any benefit, the general consensus on this thread seems to be that PvPers and RPers don't want it.

Traits serve the gameplay purpose that the race plugin used to fill, but in a much better way. Even saying that though, being able to toggle your race for no statistical change or benefit could be handy. That way when people do a /seen on you, for role-play purposes they'll know what race your character is supposed to be. It would still be up to individual players to set traits for role-play flavor if they choose so, but this way they're no longer forced by certain restrictions if they don't want to have them. And race choices then becomes as intended: a role-play factor that doesn't pressure people into certain decisions because of stats.

As staff are stated, there is a idea being worked out where basic information such as Races, height, accent, etc will be added some how when you see a player. It might be a command or something that you type to find this information about a player.

Why I don't like the Race plugin is it actually FORCES all players to have a race, and was widely abused in my opinion. It wasn't even used accurately!
People were becoming undead when role-playing as humans or Dwarves as to get that defense bonus. They don't need to now with the Traits plug in.
And, as to much my disgust ;), there are a few people on this server that's don't even want to be involved in Role-play, therefore shouldn't have to have a race.

I remember others (including myself saying this) on a whole the Traits plugin is great... BUT if we had some traits that were like racial traits or were pakages of traits to recreate the old affect of races I think that would be nice. (Like a naga trait that made you resistant towards negative potions)

Personally, though I've seen plenty of Maiar walking around on land, they usually jump into water whenever it's available. I think the real threat to Maiar RP is teenage hoodie skins recolored with blue skin and white hair.

Luckily, I've been seeing less of that skin type.
