Ok here's a pretty neat idea that I think the server could benefit from. First, just note that this suggestion would cause probably a pretty hefty amount of lag, so I'm depending on server sharding to handle it. My idea, as you can guess from the title, is to make it so forests and jungles would expand on their own. The method the server would use to do this would be to make it so tree's leaves naturally decay and the saplings they drop automatically plant themselves. This would lead to forests gradually regrowing and even old factions being "taken over" by the surrounding wilderness. Of course, the tree's leaves would regrow too. Anyway this idea is a pretty small one, but I like the idea of forests that actually change on their own without needing a guy to plant saplings for them.

This actually sounds like a good idea but it would be better if the trees could somehow go onto the roves and in buildings as well.

Actually no, as here's what would happen.

Favoured goes to computer, boots it up, and logs into minecraft.
Favoured: Let's log in.... seems to be lag
Favoured's entire screens seems to be black except for his hunger, exp, and health. Suddenly Favoured starts losing hearts.
Favoured: What the heck is this? Am I stuck underground?
Favoured dies, when he respawns, he finds out that a tree has grown inside his house, thus causing him to suffocate inside it when he logged in.

This is a great idea! Yes, it would take a lot of lag, but server sharding is coming soon, and I feel that something like this would add a lot to the immersion of the game. It would slowly change the entire map over periods of time, and thus it would help people feel as if the world was aging with them.

I must agree with Tallon up there, I think that this is a good id- Bwahahahahahhahaha!!!!!- ea

This is what we have Elves and Yanar for. Druids of the world unite! Do the Eco-friendly thing and murder a lumberjack today.

Ah, I like this idea but trees taking over factions...? I don't see this as causing lag, since it's just saplings growing into trees.

I love the idea! Especially that old and ugly cities would be transformed into ruins. However, if u Went inactive for a period of time your city would be gone XD this means that you actually have to constantly clear the enviroment around your faction which is fine with me. Unfortionaly, many great projects would be griefed, especially those in the jungle. But at the same time... Shouldent it be hard to live in the jungle? Or am i wrong :p

Lol, imagen what would happend in daendroc :p Or perhaps the ithania jungle would take over the world XD

I'd go about planting more trees, though my character is a staunch pro-industrialist. Sad fact is that industry always trumps ecology in minecraft, due to small landscapes. ._.

The time of plating trees around factions to make them close in on the enemy has begun.

I've always wanted an idea like this but have always been too lazy to post it haha. Self-Expandin-Forests would be an awesome idea. Think of all those empty wastelands that factions create when they log the forest down around them and then disband a week later. It would also allow lazy folks like me to not have to replant the forest myself anymore :P

i like this idea, which means that factions who dont want trees on their ground would have to build walls and will give a solution in the oak shortage problem in Ellador:)

If the forest growth only occurred during reboots, then the additional lag would be kept to a minimum. If this code could run after all players are kicked for the reboot or before they can log back in, then the reboots will take a little longer, but it should introduce no extra lag. (These trees should be fully grown, so that someone doesn't have to be nearby for them to grow from saplings. Though just planting saplings would reduce the likelihood of players suffocating in the new trees.)

If the rules that trees only grow in dirt or grass is preserved, as well as the light level or directly under sun requirement, then factions/players will have an effective method to contain forests.

This feature should be limited by biome, as worlds should still have plains.

Other considerations:
Rate of growth should be low enough so that this doesn't become a free tree farm, or a constant job to stop the encroaching forest.

Should the rate of growth vary by type of biome, with jungles having the fastest rate.

Should the same method be applied to huge mushrooms in mushroom biomes?

While I love this, the problem would be that fields in the middle of forests and open plains would end up being slowly consumed by Captain Planet's fury. Maybe what we need is just to promote replanting. Maybe add an mc mmo skill to green thumb or woodcutting that automatically replants a sapling when you cut down a tree.
