    Place in the World
    • Samuel’s position in Regalia is just the same as any other place in the world; he’s a wanderer, merely staying for the time he has too, picking off a carcass until there’s nothing left. Sam hasn’t stayed in Regalia long, and isn’t in official employment- the only occupation he could consider calling himself is a thief.
    Family Details
    • Sam was born out of wedlock on the twentieth of April, two hundred and sixty-nine AC, to Yanivek Cydinrach (unknown to him), and Samaelloa’ccie Jii’aello, imperialized as Samantha Knotpen. He only has one sibling with the same father and mother, with presumably many half-siblings on his father's side, and has next to no idea who is father is. Samantha herself had little family to speak of, so his family unit only ever really consisted of him, his mother and his sister.
    Background Ambitions
    • The half-blood’s lesser focused intentions come and go with the wind. His situation is so chaotic and ever-changing that he never truly pinpoints what he wants, though it comes to reasonable extent that he doesn’t need to know definitively. Samuel follows his instinct recklessly, and this end satisfies him.

    ‹ || Visual Information [ Required ] ◄ || ›
    • Eye Colour: A deep, emerald green, like that of his mothers.
    • Hair Colour: A darker shade of brown, close to black though still shows off some dull chestnut tones.
    • Hair Style: Unkempt and messy, strictly dictated by the current mood and how far away a barbershop is.
    • Skin Colour: Generally pale white, though sun-kissed from years of riding the skies.
    • Clothing: The most practical attire available, with a preference to vests and deep necklines.
    • Height: Six foot and four inches.
    • Body Build: Ripped.
    ‹ || Visual Information [ Expansion ] ◄ || ›

    Facial Features
    • The first word that may come to mind when describing Sameul’s face is striking and rugged, largely due to the straight jawline that comes with his rectangular face. His chin juts out slightly to accommodate, accentuating the round lips placed beneath his small, slightly upturned nose. Samuel’s eyes rest higher up on his face, and are relatively small, leading to the illusion of a small forehead, though his full brows offset this. The half-blood’s ears hold that of a natural Half-Elf; the size of normal human ears, though with emphasised tips that give away his Elven heritage. His face is mostly free of blemishes, aside from one diagonal scar that rest diagonal to his temple at the right side of his face.
    Body Build
    • Samuel stands at a heavy six foot and four inches, in no small part due to the Elven side of his heritage. Due to constant working on an airship for most of his life, and from his Drakwald training, Samuel is able to maintain a ripped body shape. It’s perfect for his style of fighting, which usually involves having to climb on rigging or using a high ledge to his advantage. Due to his height, however, he could be described as lithe or lanky, though with no shortage of muscle. The half-blood has a myriad of tattoos that he gained during his time as a pirate; the most formidable of which rests across his back. It depicts a man hung with swords piercing his chest, with shards of black hanging from his arms. A depiction of a dead oak is drawn on the inside of his left wrist, something frequently encountered in some of the badlands of Essalonia. On his left pectoral lies a much more emotional piece, which is a collection of skulls bound by rope, with crowns around their heads. A much more insignificant red rose rests on his left ankle, something which reminds him of the flower fields of Ithania on occasion.
    Fashion Sense
    • As a man of the skies, Samuel puts a huge emphasis on practicality. However, in this sense, practicality usually means loose fitting clothes, deep necklines and lots of pockets. If Sam could afford a ring on every finger, he could, and he never fails to at least carry his sharpened Darkwald graduation dagger strapped against his right thigh. If he’s to anticipate a fight, however, he will always equip two shorts and an extra dagger to his boot.

    ‹ ||Personality and Abilities [ Required ] ◄ || ›

    • Observer Perception | [ Rugged Rogue ] : At first viewing, Samuel comes off as a very friendly and amiable individual. While his intentions are almost always less than pure, he tries to give off an attractive atmosphere to any would-be on lookers. His sticky attention and stickier fingers seem to be the thing that keeps people closest, offering just as much attention to their words as he might the coin purse dangling at their belt. The half-blood isn’t a complete monster, however; he tries to steal from the people he believes deserve it, or can at least handle it.
    • Introspective Opinion | [ Autophobic Anxiety ] : Samuel has a very incessant anxiety that causes him to seek out people he believes have latent or potent potential; due to being betrayed multiple times in his life, he has a constant desire to connect with people and ensure that they will remain loyal to him. Despite being very nervous about this potential tick, Samuel has large confidences when it concerns his own personal ability. He believes that his professional training as a Darkwald, combined with his previous adventures aboard an airship, offers him experience not often seen. Sam consistently has outlandish ideas he wants to put into motion, regardless of consequence, which usually leads to either hilarious or disastrous consequences.
    • Ties that Bind | [ Possessive Passion ] : Due to an internal tick that causes him to seek out people and rely on them, Samuel views his friends with something of an enigma. While he recognizes that he needs them, he also doesn’t want to seem dependent on them, often pushing them away despite wishing for the opposite. His crew are something of an exception to this mindset, seeing as he’ll believe there’s no reason for them to go against him, so if they ever do, it’s likely to cause an anxiety-induced anger fit. This leads him to be seen as possessive in some instances, though he believes there’s a good reason for it. Samuel’s family situation is somewhat complicated, given he threw away his previous identity to pursue something more in his league. While he scorns his mother for how he was raised, he believes his sister to be a pinnacle of goodness, and so doesn’t judge his family based on them being family-- but as a person. The half-blood will never express it, but he’s actually a hopeless romantic. He has many fantasies concerning one day finding love, though he tends to put other priorities ahead of it, or never truly finds the time to indulge.
    • Moral Code | [ Lateral Larcenist ] : Skyrate’s don’t have any moral tenants to abide by, though in the looser sense, Samuel has a set of internal rules that he doesn’t recognize consciously; though would never truly go against. When marauding in his previous crew, he had little to no morals, though with the formation of his own, he set a precedednt with his own actions. He avoids killing whenever possible, neglects to steal from the destitute, and downright refuses to involve children in anything. At his best, he’s a thief with honour, and at his worst, he can be a pirate with a twisted sense of justice.
    • Soulful Outlook | [ Syncratic Sinner ] : Samuel has a loose interpretation of Unionism. He finds that with the cruelty the Darkwald brought with him, his faith wavers hugely. Due to this push and pull tangent with the faith, he’s open to any other kind of religion just as much. The half-blood finds more solace in spiritualism and mysticism, finding belief in what is tangible to him at the time. This is why he even pays some respect to deities of the Void, though has never entered a pact with them, and doesn't intend to any time soon. He still holds old devotions to Elléa’caesíë, the lady of chaos, often repeating her name in damnation or saying a prayer before bed each night. He's coined her as "lady luck". Samuel holds the idealist view of meritocracy and applies it to his crew, believing that those who work the hardest deserve the most power. Despite this, he doubts it would work on a large scale, and so doesn’t express this viewpoint freely.

    The Short Version
    Childhood - [ 0 - 12 ]

    • Samuel Ryder is born as Feliciie Jii’aello to Yanivek Cydinrach, and Samaelloa’ccie Jii’aello, imperialized as Samantha Knotpen, on the twentieth of April, two-hundred and sixty nine AC, in the Crown Isle of Regalia.
    • He's raised mostly by his father, who installs ideals of becoming a greater man. Feliciie has to flit between the two given their rocky relationship.
    • From his mother, he learns of his Elven heritage, and the ways of her people. He likes hearing the children's stories from his mother, though she's a touch more scornful than his father.
    • Feliciie doesn't see much of his sister, given she was much older than him and exclusively stayed with his mother.
    • As soon as it's convenient for the parents, Feliciie is sent off to Tirgunn out of necessity from his parents. He's to study the School of Darkwald, putting his life to use against the heretics of the empire.
    Teenage Years - [ 13 - 19 ]
    • Feliciie finds difficulty in initially overcoming the natural racism of the Tirgunn natives, though reaches the top of his class with flying colours.
    • His tutors take to him, however, encouraging him to use this criticism as a form of motivation.
    • After graduating from the School of Darkwald, Feliciie becomes a fully fledged knight for two years. He's unable to stomach most of the work that comes to him.
    Young Adulthood - [ 20 - 29]
    • Unsatisfied with his lot in life, Feliciie deserts his post and aims to take passage from northern Anglia to the continent of Daendroque.
    • This isn't without hardship, however-- he's fraught with despair at having to fight his former companion, leaving him wounded and left for dead.
    • As he's abandoned his army, he takes on a new name and moves away from his heritage, using the alias Samuel Ryder.
    • After stowing himself away to Daenshore, Samuel works as a mercenary for another three years. He finds his blade skills instrumental here, letting him make short work of any aristocratic contracts that come his way.
    • Samuel overhears talk of an airship crew at his favourite bar, opting to join in on the conversation.
    • It doesn't take Samuel long to worm his way into the crew, leaving Daenshore and stowing away with his new band of marauders.
    Adulthood - [ 30 - Present ]
    • Eight years in this new crew of bandits and Samuel becomes the first mate, learning most of his myriad of skills from the members of the crew.
    • Due to a dispute involving children and traversing the Northern Expanse, Samuel is left for dead in eastern Ellador.
    • Using the decrepit parts of an airship the crew had just raided, Samuel is able to protect himself from the winter cold most nights. After a particularly exciting encounter with an Ogre that had him fed for weeks, Samuel soon reaches Grebor.
    • It's here that he meets Fawza Mustafa and Theos Veer, using their skills, his own, and a make-shift crew he assembles to steal a merchant vessel from the hold and soon convert it into something piracy-worthy.
    • Along the next two years of conning and plundering, Samuel comes into contact with Celica Antiesse, Marcus Flynn, Antonina Kazakova and Erin Fusrei. He establishes them as a true crew.
    • After encountering his old crew somewhere west of the Crown Isles, Samuel attempts to engage them and looses. Now without an airship and with the bare-bones members of his crew, Samuel takes to the Crown Isle proper in order to gather enough money to buy another or find somebody else's airship to pilot.

    The Long Version

    Childhood - [ 0 - 12 ]

Samuel Ryder is born as Feliciie Jii’aello to Yanivek Cydinrach, and Samaelloa’ccie Jii’aello, imperialized as Samantha Knotpen, on the twentieth of April, two-hundred and sixty nine AC, in the Crown Isle of Regalia. Feliciie is primarily raised by his father for the first five years of his life, given that Samantha and Yani have parenting difficulties along the way. Feliciie’s older sister doesn’t enter the picture much, given that by the time he’s able to remember much, she’s out of the house studying one thing or another. While he has fond memories of her fleetingly, he doesn’t stay attached.

During his childhood, he learns about his mixed bloodlines, the Faith of Estel, and his father’s work as a mercenary and retinue. He takes to his father’s side of the family more, wishing to become a warrior of renown, in a bad light or a good one. After a few years of back and forth living between his parents in the Crown Isle, Feliciie is eventually sent off to the school of Darkwald at the age of twelve.

    Teenage Years - [ 13 - 19 ]

Feliciie’s first few years as a Darkwald are suffered with racism from the mostly Tirgunn population. One bad group of children proceed to over-indulge at his expense, which might have drowned out an otherwise quiet majority. This only serves as a motivator for the young half-elf; half-way through his tutelage, most of the Ailor instructors take note that his bodily frame suits the style well. This leads to some praise, and even harsher criticism.

The half-blood mostly takes to his longsword rather than his crossbow bolts, earning him a reputation as an up and coming longsword fencer of the youngest kind. Feliciie graduates with flying colours, though once the harsh reality of the world hits him, he soon regrets it. While his work offered him the chance to learn about the right places to hit to cause the most pain, he never thought that the brutality of the Darkwald would extend as far as it had-- he was sent to Anglia and deployed there, scaling through the northern mountains for aberrations.

    Young Adulthood - [ 20 - 29]

For ages twenty through twenty-two, for Feliciie’s service, all he found was despair. Having to root out even the kindest of folk for speaking the words of Estel didn't stick right with him; he might've been a man of pride, but he wasn't without some kind of thieves honour. He found that a life of cruelty simply wasn’t for him, and decided to pack his bags and desert. This meant he had to leave his own name behind, and on the docks of the northern shores of Anglia, he formulated a new one from his mother’s name and one he picked from that lovely barmaid he flirted with the night before; Samuel Ryder takes off from a peasant village shore, bound for the western continent of Daendroc and all it has to offer.

Twenty three year old Samuel is drinking his sorrows as usual in a bar in Daenshore after a night of bodyguarding some low-noble aristocrats, indulging his favourite drinking buddy in the story of his patrons shady dealings. He soon comes across a motley crew of what seem to be pirates, and soon inquires as to their intentions. Samuel is soon informed that these are actually pirates of the sky, using an airship to travel between cities, loot and con them for all their worth, and then break out of town before anyone suspects a thing. They’re no stranger to more violent endeavours, though; shelling cities for ransom and capturing other airships for money.

The captain, Aiden Faulkner, takes a liking to Samuel, and offers him a place on their ship. The rest is history for the next eight years until Samuel reaches thirty, now a seasoned veteran at his trade.

    Adulthood - [ 30 - Present ]

Samuel progresses to a first-mate position after eight years in the crew, learning airship piloting from Aidan while his myriad of other skills comes from conning city after city. He learns how to use a swivel, make small explosives, and climb the rigging for tactical advantage. At age 35, after thirteen years with his current crew, the reigning first-mate to Aidan of the Black Corsair, tragedy strikes the half-blood.

While flying above Ellador, the crew takes another airship, just as usual. Aidan demands no survivors; however, there are children on board. Samuel outright refuses to execute children, going so far as to fight the rest of the crew members until he’s forced into submission. Aidan then announces that the group is going to try and pierce the Northern Expanse, to which Samuel takes great defiance with. In the night, he messes with the navigational equipment in order to throw them off, though is interrupted by Aidan himself. He’s left for dead somewhere in eastern Ellador.

Abandoned in the frozen-wastes of eastern Ellador, Samuel takes on some sort of tribal instinct and begins to use what he learned under his old navigator to begin heading west. After commandeering some survival items from the hull of the wrecked airship he was left with, armed with naught but a dagger, someone’s old jacket, a flask of water and a small amount of black powder, he begins his trek towards Grebor. After a few days of trekking and living off of carcasses left by Antelabbits, Samuel comes across a cave inhabited by a singular, lone ogre. Sam thinks and estimates it to be about eight foot tall, but in reality it only averaged six.

Using what seemed to be a momentary snowstorm, Samuel uses what little blackpowder he has left to tie it into a small paper bag. With what little he learned from sneaking around in the tundra, he stalked into the entrance of the ogre’s cave, casting a massive shadow on the wall. Just as the ogre turned, Samuel threw the powder directly towards the fire, knocking the ogre over from it’s seated position. The half-blood took the initiative and drove his dagger deep into his neck, causing him to bleed out within seconds, though not without bruises from the struggle.

After making a meal and a few days supply out of his defeated foe, Samuel completes the journey to Grebor within a few more weeks. He adopts to the culture, sporting some Dwarvish attire that barely fits him. The half-blood spends weeks trying to track down word of the Black Corsair, to very little avail. He eventually takes to the side of Fawza Mustafa at forty years old, taking a liking to her and poking fun at her studies.

While making friends with Fawza, Samuel accumulates a following with a group including Theos Veer. The three combine their skills in order to raid one of the skyports outside of the city, using cunning, engineering and hex magic in order to steal the vessel and set out south. Along the way, Samuel picks up faces like Celica Antiesse, Marcus Flynn, Antonina Kazakova and Erin Fusrei. He uses his silver tongue with each to convince them to the crew, amassing a crowd of friends that he wished to have all along.

After two years of piloting his own vessel and successfully plundering every damn thing he could along the way, in his own way, Samuel runs into the Black Corsair in the seas between Daendroc and the Crown Isle. Overcome by anger, Samuel engages the ship. In a fit of ironic fate, Samuel loses the engagement. The ship he only recently coined the SS Isabella, after that same barmaid in northern Anglia, falls into the eastern shores of Daendroc. Destitute and without a ship, Samuel and his crew make their way to the Crown Isle, seeking fortune for another airship and employment to make it work.
