    Saladin al-Raptum

    Basic Info
    • Full Name: Salah ad-Din min mawalid altanin al'aswad Zarqān al-Raptus
    • Meaning: The righteousness of the faith, born of the black dragon, Golden soul of Raptum
    • Nickname(s): Saladin al-Raptum (Simplified), Batal Kash-Tooral (Champion of Kash-Tooral)
    • Age: 57
    • Gender: Male
    • Race: Songaskian (Kash-Tooral Heritage)
    • Sexuality: Straight
    • Preferred Weapon: Blackened short haft Tabarzin axe, ceremonial Mandinka sword.
    • Position in Regalia: Thanks to his race and history Saladin is treated with some level of suspicion in Regalia but the name still carries with it a certain reverence, especially among his followers and perhaps a touch of fear among those aware of his past. He has taken up residence so as to maintain some proximity to the Regalian empire understanding that above all, knowledge is power.
    • Upbringing: He had a tough upbringing, raised mostly by his stern Grandfather who instilled a sense of immense pride in his Kash-Tooral heritage whilst his father led a small Songaskian clan across the deserts of the Farah’deen. His father was respected for his kindness but criticized for his light ruling hand and benevolence and this led to many a cold, hungry night. Upon his fathers death he took control of the group and, taking up an axe, moulded them into the bandit clan of Raptum.
    • Ambitions: After uniting Raptum and Alamut his goals focused and personal gain is no longer a necessity, rather a hobby.

Head Description: Saladin has strong features, most noticeable are an aquiline nose and thick jawline, dotted with stubble, that underlines thin frowning lips. A sharp brow shadows sunken, intense eyes with dark amber irises flecked with a flaming orange that almost appears to glow in juxtaposition to his dark skin with complimentary warm red undertones that sits in stark contrast to the shock of unkempt white hair atop his head, kept short and swept back. A scar trails from his hairline down to the corner of his lips.

Body Description: Even amongst those the same height Saladin appears to stand tall, from his years of direct combat and leadership he has adopted a certain stance that helps to outline the solid frame of muscle he has built up from swinging his axe giving an overall athletic appearance. The years haven’t all been kind however as one shoulder sloped slightly lower than the other from numerous combat drills and a number of scars draw lattice patterns over rough skin.

Fashion Description: Back in the days of raiding with Raptum as a group of bandits Saladin would often wear more practical clothing fit for desert travel to keep cool and allow for maximum mobility in combat. This sense of practicality followed him through to his current days, though it is a rare sight to see him without some extra form of ornamentation now.

He is most often seen in informal situations with a short, almost knee length Kaftan in deep red with black brocade embossed patterning, over the top of dark undergarments and off white, sirwal trousers with dark leather Babouche on his feet.

In more formal situations he will don a bright white sash with decorative golden stitched patterning adorning the edges to compliment golden decorative pauldrons and his family's Mandinka sword rests at his side, old and antiquated, never drawn except for the direst of situations. In regal situations more golden jewelry is added along with more draping silk fabrics, though it is worn with a begrudging acceptance.

In combat he wears an ornate Bornu Cuirass in blackened steel with a coat of chainmail beneath and his modified short hafted black Tabarzin in hand, something he appears much more comfortable donning.

Voice Description: He has a booming voice with a slight rasp from years of shouting on a battlefield though he rarely has to raise it to be heard in social situations. His songaskian accent still lies thick on each word yet all but those entirely unfamiliar with the accent should still be able to understand him with minimal issue.

    Personality

Character Alignment: Lawful neutral. What many would assume would be chaotic is actually simply lawful of a different variety. He has not successfully led and united two disparate clans without a set of rules and a moral compass.

Those on the sharp end of his axe may feel otherwise but when it comes to his people and his land a strict set of rules are to be adhered to for the betterment of all, most of his actions taken are done so in an attempt to further the reach of his clan, be it power or wealth, whatever helps them, though this personal moral code and adherence to certain Songaskian traditions can and does often clash with existing worldly power structures.

Personality Type: ENTJ, Commander. When it comes to leadership and order Saladin is often bold and outgoing, his methods of leadership making an imprint on those who follow him as he gives what can only be described as unavoidable, unambiguous orders.

To those who do not follow him however they may not see the man for who he is, instead finding a rather more stoic, cold facade, if no less unreserved. This show of strength however is simply the flip side to his dominant preference for being in a position of command, a contrast that can also be seen when he is relaxing and more calmly attending to his bee hives or fishing with an old, well used rod.

Religion: Saladin is a devout follower of Shambala, something that may not be entirely obvious upon initial contact. He practises it in a very traditional, personal way with others rarely seeing what could be described as fervent devotion, rather a quiet prayer from an otherwise assertive, almost doctrinaire man.

The true worship tends to come out more blatantly in moments of battle, the faith in his lineage instilled by his grandfather coming to the forefront in full force as he holds the name of Kash-Tooral on his lips and calling for Shambala to judge his actions just.

Weaknesses: Saladin’s main weakness tends to be his stubborn nature, his more outgoing personality can sometimes place him into situations that he did not intend but his difficulty when it comes to stepping back from those situations is what truly causes the issues, an almost arrogant pride can get in the way of what need not be an issue.

Quirks: Though his stance is quite often clearly that of a leader he does have a few physical quirks that give away his past, rubbing at old scars and putting pressure on aching joints from injuries sustained in battles long past.

Likes: Other than commanding the leadership of those who follow him and earning more wealth and glory in combat Saladin is surprisingly fond of certain culinary arts. Though he is no chef, his love of tending to his bees and then baking his classic Khaliat Nahal (Honey Bread), Honey cake and some brewed Tej are a calming joy to contrast the combat he often engages in.

Conversely, there is a thrill to combat, and very specifically victory that has kept him going over so many years of combat, unification and conquest that never gets old, a rush that feels like an almost primal connection to his ancestry and heritage.

Dislikes: Seeing people overstep their boundaries, whether it be misplaced arrogance or a conflicting ego, is something that riles him up, though he rarely gets truly angry this state of discomfort is sometimes enough to put him on the back foot and have him speak things which may not be acceptable for the situation at hand.

Whilst loss or unfair tactics against him do not seem to phase him, instead pushing him to overcome them, if a member of his people fall astray to these same pitfalls he it can enrage him, thankfully a clan so tight nit rarely has to deal with such issues but his fierce loyalty to his people being betrayed by an outside force is suffocatingly infuriating.

    Life Story

Early on in life Saladin struggled, his family had very little to their name after one of his ancestors had chosen to split away from the normal Songaskian rule, taking a small group of his men with him. By the time Saladin had been born this group had shrunk, still managing to maintain a presence in the Farah’deen but nothing that could be considered a threat to any existing power structures.

His father tried to teach him compassion in the way he led his men but when food became sparse and the nights grew colder such ideals fell on deaf ears and grumblings about their leaders' weakness spread among the men.

Meanwhile, the now aged grandfather of Saladin had been the one to tutor the boy, teaching him about the history of his people and the way of their faith. The stories of the great black dragons are what stuck with him the most, that his heritage may link him directly to them was a point of ecstatic joy for the child.

By the time he was a teenager his grandfather had passed and his father had grown ill, many of his men had abandoned the group and things were looking dire. It was not until his father passed away too that Saladin decided that whilst he respected his father, his kindness had been a crutch. He took up his fathers Mandinka sword as a sign of his leadership, gathered the remaining men up, recruiting more as they travelled and slowly turned the group into what became known as the infamous Raptum bandit clan, scouring the deserts, raiding caravans, stealing the goods and reselling them. It was not long before merchants travelling the sands of Farah’deen without enough money for an escort would quietly whisper to each other about the Merchant King of Thieves.

As the activities of the bandit clan grew more fearsome, going from robbery and raids to murder, they attracted attention of forces they would not be able to handle, powers that had militias and small armies at their command.

Their saving grace came in the form of Alamut, a group of assassins, an old house who had declined in power but still held a strong and almost entirely unknown defence in the mountainous regions surrounding the desert. It was these warriors that took the group in, seeing potential in them and training them whilst secretly hoping they could regain some of their past glory by recruiting the manpower of the rapidly growing Raptum bandits. A black tabarzin poleaxe to represent his Kash heritage was forged as a gift to Saladin to seal the partnership.

Both of their wishes did eventually come true however when the head of the house of Alamut was killed in battle and a swift, decisive power struggle saw Saladin sitting at the head of the house, both Raptum and Alamut at his control, finally united in full.

Their new position of power, defensible and well stocked, helped keep their growth going steady.

Years later, after many skirmishes, Saladin has finally gotten himself into a position where he does not have to fight for food or raid to survive. The haft of his Tabarzin cut short to match his more ferocious fighting style perfectly mirrors the situation he finds himself in, what was once a weapon made for defence, gifted in alliance, was now used for fun, modified for pure offence as he entered combat with glee to grow his and his people's wealth.

He has since grown more tactful with his raids however, still delighting in the combat, but aiming his sights higher, taking up residence in Regalia to learn what he can, for when the time is right.
