I want this thread to be open for players to give their viewpoints on quite an interesting topic: the economy. This covers everything from how to earn money quickly, the prices of items, the effects of different elements on the economy, and more. The only thing I ask is to provide constructive posts and to not turn this into a flame war.

My viewpoints on some of these are simple. For example, I think that a lot of the server's money is flooded in and that things like these should be cut down:
~ Voting rewards
~ Starting player money
~ Mob loot
Things like these should be increased:
~ Houses and shops in Regalia
~ Events with entry fees (like horse jousting or gladiator fights)
~ The use of private arenas for money

If you need me to elaborate or post more about how I get to these conclusions or ideas, please ask. Otherwise, let the debating begin! :)

I, personally, do not agree with the house prices being increased. I've never had more than 100 silver on myself at once, and usually I hover at.... 10-20. The reason I do not think the prices should rise, is A) I have a hard enough time raising money for my house, B) Houses are a good place for people who only want to RP (They already have to pay quite a bit for a good house, if they never travel) and C) A house is a good way to give people a place to go to when RPing, and someone keeps interrupting. The player can go hide in his house, and wait out the annoyance, (assuming they don't /ignore them) and if the annoyance comes inside, then the player has every right to kill him/her.

Those are my reasonings (Why does that say its spelled wrong...) for the house subject. For the shops, I agree. From my opinion, shops are meant to be a return on investment. Having one for that cheap will net you a LOT of money, assuming its in a place where people travel frequently.

On the flip side, money is hard to get Ingame, so having expensive shops are not very noob friendly.

(I hope this is what you meant by: 'constructive')

Imboring56 why should the starting player money be cut down? i think 30s is a good place to start.
The reason why is because you can easily get a set of iron armor, tools, and still have over 20 silver to spare. If you don't know the prices, then you'll have at least 10. I personally think that new players need to learn better money management skills for later on, so that they don't just buy expensive stuff and don't know what to do with it, only to find out they can't sell it at the same price, leaving them depressed. I've had this happen too many times to count.

(What's worse is if they pick Dakkar and it rains. :P)

Regalia housing needs to have its prices decreased I'm barely scraping by trying to get 20 silver a month for a house that I RP in(plus some storage). Decreasing the price would help populate regalia with more RPers who just can't afford to live there right now. This could bring more RP as well as give the city a more bustling feel, because as of now I don't see many people in Regalia. Now, instead of doing this maybe if they could put the poor district back in and have it more organised, easier to reach, not be underground |-(, and larger than the other districts.

Edit:
Also, regarding shops, decrease the prices there a bit and maybe scatter merchant stalls or shops across regalia instead of putting them in one place to have LagCity. this could encourage people to roam the streets of regalia instead of just crowd the tavern and the prison.

Ah, another Economy Post... -shakes head- I understand the reasoning of your ideas but disagree with them on these points:

  • Increasing House Prices - This would be bad because less people would be able to afford a house, cutting down the amount of roleplay in Regalia. The economy comes second to roleplay, after all.
  • Starting Player Money - Reducing this would be unfair towards future players who don't get the same start that older ones got. It would also damage the economy - if you think that they will spend all of their silver on stuff they can't use then perhaps a suggestion to have an NCP or 3 in the market district telling people not to spend all of their silver at once?
  • Increasing Shop Prices - Shops used to be 1000s a month to rent in the central building - the result was that everyone stopped renting there because they couldn't make a profit. The purpose of shops it to allow players to make a profit while also moving resources around. Raising the price would reduce both of those aspects of the economy.
  • Events with entry fees - No. Events are supposed to be for fun and roleplay, putting a price on them would be actively harming the roleplay of the server. Placing fees on certain aspects of them (for example, having a betting system for a gladiator fight and putting a fee on that) is acceptable because they don't NEED to bet in order to watch and cheer.
I will now take this time to state that the MassiveCraft Economy WORKS the way it is right now - it may not work the way you want it to, or the way you think it should, but it works. Items that aren't worth a lot won't increase in value just because there's less silver in flow - that will actually cause them to lose value so that people can still buy the same amount as they used to. Increasing rent prices won't fix the economy, it will further ruin it because people will have less disposable income that can be spent on items they don't really need. In summary, hands off is best for this economy.

I'm not increasing the house prices, they were dropped for the reason that before houses were barely inhabited due to the high pricing and the players who roleplay a lot in regalia barely make money. They are easy as hell to pay for you guys, but not for new players who just want to roleplay there, and they are meant for roleplay, to reinforce the feeling of city population in Regalia.

House prices are very affordable and anyone who is willingly to work a bit for their money (you only need to earn 66/67 copper per day) can easily afford them now.

I imagine it's been suggested before, but a server shop would get money out of the system and a lot of the rich guys on the server is just looking for a way to spend it on things they don't already got tons of.

A server shop selling unique blocks from regalia or something else you aren't able to get naturally would most likely attract customers.

You can actually get full iron everything for less than 1 silver.
